4 FLOODLIT MATCHES TO CLOSE THE HOME SEASON
A warm welcome to players andofficials of Glastonbury Town FC, who we meetfor the first time this season.
The last few games have produced someindifferent displays. First was the Berrow gamewhere we played some of our best football of the season for about anhour only to fold as a team as soon as they scoredtheir first goal, and go on to let a further 3 goalsin losing 1-4, but there were a lot of positivesfrom the game. Then away to Clevedon wherewe were force to make changes, we didn’t playwellbut I still felt we should have got something fromthe game. Then last week we got back to winningways beating Odd Down Reserves 2-4 away.
I'm expecting a hard game tonight againsta Glastonbury side that lie bottom of the league, but in most of there games they have only lost
by the odd goal. According to our ClubStatto meetings with Glastonbury date back tojust after the first world War (Season 1919/20),when both clubs played in the Somerset SeniorLeague along with notable opponents such asYeovil & Petters United, Paulton Rovers, FromeTown, Timsbury, Street and Peasedown St John.
Tonight Newy and I look forward to havinga few more players to pick from, though we stillhave a long injury list.
Finally, don’t forget that we are just alongthe coast on Saturday when we have the returnmatch with Watchet. I know how much theplayers enjoy these occasions, and we hope tosee as many supporters as we took there lastEaster. We will be going all out to wipe out theirvictory here on Boxing Day, by taking all threepoints.
Hope to see you there!

Further to the latest Italian matchfixing scandal to hit the headlines this week(see extract below reproduced fromMonday’s Guardian), I can confirm thatMinehead defender Rog Baguette has finallybeen cleared of all match fixing allegations.
After studying Sky TV’s 18 differentcamera angles available from their secretfilming of the game at Odd Down Reserveson Saturday, the panel have clearedBaguette of virtually all accusations of
match fixing which had been made sincehis dubious own goal had brought the hometeam momentarily back into the match.
Having studied other sections ofplay it was decided that rather than beingdeemed a deliberate act the most probablereason for diverting the ball past goalkeeperMiss Creredith was in fact a shocking lackof ability and that no further action wouldbe taken. Rog was then released withoutfurther charge.
Rog Baguette’s name cleared after inquest
The former Bari defender AndreaMasiello, who now plays for Atalanta, hasbeen arrested in connection with allegedmatch-fixing in Serie A last season. Eight ofMasiello's former Bari team-mates are alsobeing investigated by police over the possiblemanipulation of matches.
A statement from the Italian FootballFederation (FIGC) said: "Around one dozenpeople are under investigation and nine ofthese are ex-players of the red and whiteteam, involved in the alleged fixing of ninematches in last season's Serie Achampionship."
The FIGC added that other peoplehad also been arrested by police in thesouthern city of Bari, although it did notspecify who.
Italian media said the allegationscentre on a match between Bari and Leccein May last year, which Bari lost 2-0 with
Masiello scoring an own goal in the 80thminute. Bari had already been relegated bythe time that match was played.
The Bari sporting director, GuidoAngelozzi, said the club had nothing to dowith any manipulation of the result. "Wethought it was a normal match," he said. "Theclub is a damaged party in this. It gained noadvantage from this at all."

The Gerry Hatrick Man of theMatch Trophy, is awarded to the Mineheadplayer whose performance most catchesthe eye at each home match. Adjudicated
by the mysterious Gerry Hatrick (pronounced “geriatric”), the player winningthe accolade on the most occasions will be presented with the prestigiousGerry Hatrick trophy at the end of the season. The Star Ratings, give a moredetailed insight into each player’s individual form fluctuations throughout thelength of the season, but should be largely taken as a bit of fun.

MINEHEAD (1)1 BERROW (0) 4Minehead hosted fifth placed Berrow,
who started the season in top form leading thetable for several weeks having been promotedfrom the First Division last season. Withmanager Robbie Hopkins having close to a fullsquad to pick from, Minehead managed to puttogether one of their best performances forthe first hour of the match, but wilted inexpli-cably once the visitors were gifted two goalsand ended up losing a match that they shouldhave put to bed by half time, by a 4-1 scorelinewhich few supporters leaving the ground atthe final whistle could comprehend.
Minehead started the game looking byfar the better side and twice in the first fewminutes Matt Cracknell made incisive runs onthe left flank going past defenders at will, andthis seemed to set the tone for an entertainingfirst half from the home side. After 14minutes, with Minehead applying virtually allthe pressure, Paul Smyth expertly opened thescoring with a trademark free kick from 25yards which the visiting goalkeeper could onlywatch fly past him into the top corner. Fiveminutes later with Minehead rampant, LukeBloys was unlucky to see his shot saved by thekeeper and with the game staying a particu-larly one sided affair another Paul Smyth freekick was this time well saved by theoverworked keeper.
Six minutes before the interval ChrisYeates was well placed to increase the leadbut his shot hit the outside of the goalpost andwent wide for a goal kick. Just before half timeBerrow had their first attempt on goal – ahopeful long shot from Craig Hirons whichwent straight at Chris Meredith who savedcomfortably.
After the break Minehead remained incontrol, though Jeff Read went close toequalising, heading just wide of an upright.Another Minehead attack saw a shot fromMatt Cracknell deflected away for a cornerkick.
At the turn of the hour the visiting keeper, who had been hobbling badly for a fewminutes, was substituted, with diminutivemidfield player Shaun Lismore taking over ingoal. This should have signalled for Mineheadto pepper the goal with shots, but within a fewminutes the visitors had been gifted a bizarreequaliser after a shot which was going wellwide hit a striker on the top of the headlooping down onto the top of the crossbar.Keeper Chris Meredith attempted to push theball back over the crossbar to the safety of acorner but merely pushed the ball back up inthe air and a robust challenge on the keeperby an onrushing striker meant the ball then fellkindly to Jeff Read who scored the equaliser.
After this the game became far moreeven, though Minehead presented theirvisitors with another goal twelve minutesfrom time when Lloyd Dean ran onto a slicedPaul Smyth clearance to give his side a leadthat was unimaginable at half time. Twominutes later a fine shot from Simon Bauntonmade it 3-1 with the visitors sensing victory.
Minehead then made three substitu-tions in an attempt to get back in the gamewith Ross Addicott, Brian Hall and MikeGraddon replacing Luke Bloys and JackGroves-Furse and the move almost paid offinstantly with all three being involved in amove which ended with Mike Graddon’spowerful shot from just inside the box flyingjust wide of the goal-frame with keeper wellbeaten.
To rub salt into Minehead’s wounds, the visitors scored another goal in the finalminute, when Luke McErlain slammed the ballhome from twelve yards out after it had fallenkindly for him.
Minehead, having failed to take theirchances during the first half when they had attimes outplayed their opponents, paid thepenalty for some sloppy defending and couldthen find no way back into the match whichthey could and should have won comfortably.

CLEVEDON UNITED (1) 2 MINEHEAD (0)0
A depleted Minehead team travelled toClevedon United on Saturday and were beaten2-0 by a team who had not won in the leaguesince 16th September and have plummeteddown the league badly and before the kick offwere in a relegation position. With 9 players unavailable for various reasons, four reserve team regulars were brought intothe squad, but despite being weakenedMinehead will still feel they could have taken farmore from the game, having turned in anordinary performance.Sam Tarr, making his debut in goal, was putunder pressure from the start and after fiveminutes the second of two deep corners washeaded back across goal to the home side’sprolific scorer for many seasons Tony Cook, whobundled the ball home to open the scoring.Paul Smyth went close to equalising with aheader from Stefan Phillips’ free kick, but ingeneral Clevedon were worthy of their one goallead and remained in some sort of control of thegame.Minehead did start to find their feet towardsthe end of the first half and should undoubtedly
have equalised when a fine cross from MikeGraddon was missed by Chris Newbold at thefar post with the goal at his mercy. Twominutes later Paul Smyth’s cross was volleyedgoalwards by Chris Yeates, but the experiencedhome keeper Mark Selway managed to parrythe attempt against the post from where it wascleared to safety.Early in the second half Minehead’s playmakerStefan Phillips was taken to hospital having splitthe stitches in his back after an operation earlierin the week, and shortly afterwards MichaelBanks made it two nil after good work from theveteran Tony Cook.A fierce Chris Yeates shot was well saved byhome keeper Selway, and after injuries to JackGroves-Furse and Luke Bloys had meant theintroduction of substitutes Mark Williams andmanager Robbie Hopkins, Minehead had oppor-tunities to get back into the game but failed tomake them count. The most promising aspect to come out of thegame was the performance of teenager MichaelGraddon, whose family have been synonymouswith football in Minehead over the passed 50years, who enjoyed a good game on the lefthand side of midfield and shows good signs forthe future.

ODD DOWN RESERVES (0) 2 MINEHEAD (3)4Having stuttered badly in their last 110
minutes of football, and again with a large amountof key players not available, the omens did notlook good for Minehead’s depleted side atstruggling Odd Down Reserves on Saturday. Teenager Mike Graddon retained hisplace, Sam Hall and Alex Pope made their firststarts for the first team and with Rob Gurnett andBen Flatley fortunately being home fromuniversity, the blues were able to start with 11players.
However any potential anxieties werekept well hidden as after the hosts had headed justwide from a corner in the first minute, the bluestook the game to Odd Down and within the next 8minutes the game was effectively won.
First with an attempt on goal was ChrisYeates, whose shot from distance went narrowlyover, then with the next attack Yeates’ presencecaused home keeper Duncan Fear to twice loosehis grasp of the balland it fell kindly forMichael Graddon tocoolly slot home hisfirst goal for the club inthe 4th minute. Threeminutes later a fineindividual goal fromYeates doubled thelead – the striker firstlybeat an opponent tothe ball then having wriggled past a defender hebeat two more within a confined space usingimagination and immense control with two 180°drag-back spins. This presented him with a one onone with the keeper and he chose to shoot from 15yards and found the corner of the net givingDuncan Fear no chance. Within another minute allthree points were virtually wrapped up when
another youngsterSam Hall thumpeda loose ball homefrom six yards out,for his firstMinehead seniorXI goal.
Theseearly goals putMinehead’smakeshift side incomplete control, and more goals seemed likely asthe blues not only looked to secure another leaguedouble but also to improve their negative goaldifference, however the closest they came duringthe remainder of the first half was a Ben Flatleyfree kick from 30 yards out which went inches over.
The second half saw Minehead noticeablytake their foot of the gas but still remain largely incontrol of the points. A strong run by Chris Yeates
saw him release MikeyGraddon into a goalscoringopportunity but a dubiousoffside decision thwartedthe raid. Alex Pope then ranthrough the heart of thedefence but his shot wasstraight at Fear. Ben Flatley’spass found Sam Hall in agood position but theyoungster ballooned his
effort over the crossbar. The home side then pulled a goal back
when their most noticeable player, centre forwardAsh Scott, who in general was kept quiet byMinehead’s captain Lee Todd and his fellowcentral defender Mike Mullen, poked the ballhome after a melee.
Minehead were soon three goals in frontagain when Ben Flatley’s sidefooted shot wasadjudged to have crossed the line after smashingagainst the crossbar, but with 15 minutesremaining Rob Gurnett put through his own goalwhen attempting to control an innocuous lookingcross.
The home side came to life for the final 15minutes, but the visitors comfortably held on towin all three points.

On Saturday 24th
March the race for theErrea Somerset County
Premier Division title took anotherunexpected twist as second placedCheddar lost 2-1 at lowly Bridgwater TownReserves. The hosts took the lead on thehour when central defender Josh Vickerypowered home a header from a welldelivered corner-kick. Connor Watts thenset up Dave Pearse to double Bridgwater’sadvantage, which they held onto despite alate reply from Cheddar. This result meantthat Cheddar are now three points behindleaders Nailsea United who enjoyed a 2-0home win against tonight’s visitors to theRec, Glastonbury Town. The deadlock wasbroken on twenty minutes when AlexGoodwin hit a low cross into theGlastonbury area where Jim Leeconnected first time to give Nailsea thelead. It took until twenty minutes fromtime for the home side to seal the pointsas a James Taylor throw in was flicked onby Stuart Lee invitingly for Jim Lee to scorehis and Nailsea’s second. Ashton andBackwell United moved up to third placein the table following an important 2-1 winat Bishops Lydeard. Shane Smith’s sidewent behind after 54 minutes whenLydeard scored from a corner, but a goodthrough ball by Connor Biggins created theequaliser for Ricky Briggs. A superbpenalty save by Liam McFarlaneprevented Ashton trailing again andinstead Briggs chipped the winner to sealthe three points. Langford Rovers slippedone place to fourth after losing out 2-1 at
home against Cutters Friday. The visitorstook the lead in the 20th minute when aLangford defender put the ball into hisown net and Dan Spill doubled theadantage after 35 minutes. Langfordreduced the deficit just before half-timebut could not prevent Cutters Friday fromreturning home with all three points.Berrow were unable to build on their 4-1midweek win at Minehead as they wentdown 1-0 at home against our neighboursWatchet Town. This excellent result forWatchet leaves them level on points withfifth placed Berrow with a match in hand. The mid-table clash between StockwoodGreen and visitors Shirehampton saw thehome side edge home by a 1-0 scoreline. There was barely five minutes on the clockwhen Jason Smith got on the end of across to slot the ball past goalkeeperJordan Dunning to give Stockwood thelead. Shirehampton striker Scott Bamfordwas twice denied by the home custodianas Stockwood Green held onto the winwhich lifted them up to seventh spot.Minehead ended a disappointing week asthey went down 2-0 at strugglingClevedon United. Veteran striker TonyCook bundled home the opener on sixteenminutes and the same player turnedprovider when setting up Michael Banksfor the clinching goal on the hour. NailseaTown eased any lingering relegation fearswith a 1-0 home win over third frombottom club St. George Easton in Gordanothanks to a 20th minute goal set up by LiamKnight and scored by Mike Purnell.

On a sun drenchedday when a trip to theseaside may have been
more appropriate, I took theopportunity to pay a visit to WordsworthDrive to take in the Evo-Stik SouthernLeague South and West clash betweenTaunton Town and high riding Sholing.Taunton had trouble coping with the quickpass and move football provided bySholing, and only a series of fine savesfrom keeper Lee Mathews kept the homeside in the match. A fine left footed effortfrom Sholing’s Barry Mason on 23 minutesproved to be the winning goal but to theircredit Taunton created some presentablechances which fell to Jon Vance, ChrisMcGrath, Rodney Marsh and Luke Redrup. It seems only a matter of time beforeBideford clinch the title after their latest3-1 win at bottom club Stourport Swifts. Adouble strike from Matt Andrew andpenalty converted by Richard Grovesstretched Bideford’s unbeaten run to anincredible 24 matches. Tiverton Town’shopes of reaching the play-offs took aknock as they were held to a 1-1 draw athome against Thatcham Town. JulesEmati-Emati put the home side aheadafter just fifteen minutes when he fired inan audacious lob from fully 40-yards butthe visitors grabbed a share of the spoilswhen Tom Brown equalised, despiteseeing his side earlier reduced to ten menas Gareth Thomas was red-carded on thestroke of half-time. On Saturday Nailsea United tookanother step towards claiming the Errea
Somerset County Premier League titlefollowing a 4-0 home win over Berrow. The result puts them a clear six pointsahead of their second placed rivalsCheddar who were surprisingly thumped6-2 at Cutters Friday. Langford Roversmoved up to third place in the table afternarrow defeating hosts St.George Eastonin Gordano 3-2, a result that leavesSt.George still firmly in the relegationzone. Ashton and Backwell United slippedto fourth after only managing a goallessdraw at relegation threatened ClevedonUnited whilst Taunton Blackbrook are stillnot entirely clear of trouble after losing 1-0at Stockwood Green. Nailsea Townclaimed a useful point in a 1-1 draw athome against mid-table Bishops Lydeard. The West Somerset clubs experiencedmixed fortunes as Minehead enjoyed a 4-2victory at second from bottom club OddDown Reserves while Watchet Townslipped to a 3-2 home loss againstChampions Shirehampton. Our local clubs competing in the Evo-StikSouthern League Division South and WestDivision were unable to manage any pointsbetween them on Saturday. TauntonTown went down 2-0 at Cinderford Townwhilst Bridgwater Town suffered a 1-0reverse at home against Halesowen Town. The Devon sides had better fortunes asBideford closed in on the title with a homegoalless draw against Paulton Rovers whilefirst-half goals from Nardiello and Emati-Emati contributed to Tiverton Town’s 2-0win at struggling Didcot Town to give thema chance of a top six finish.

MINEHEAD AFC
Minehead Football Club was originallyfounded in 1889 and spent their early years in localcompetitions. They entered the Western Leagueat the start of the 1924/25 season, but afterDivision 2 had diminished to just 8 clubs returnedto the Somerset Senior League for 1928/29,remaining in the league until WWII. After thehostilities the club enjoyed success in firstly theNorth Devon Senior League, followed by the EastDevon and Exeter League, returning to theWestern League ranks for the 1949/50 season. Theclub turned semi-professional in 1950/51 underformer Exeter City captain Steve Walker, and inthe late fifties became one of the strongest forcesin the league under the guidance of Bristol basedRon Gingell. Though they remained in theWestern League for 23 seasons, in spite of beingone of the most consistent teams in the league,Minehead never actually won the Western LeagueChampionship, although they finished as runners-up twice (in 66/67 and 71/72). They joined the Southern League in 1972,finishing 5th in Division One (South). The followingseason saw them improve slightly by finishing 4th,followed by 3rd in 74/75. In the 75/76 season theclub improved yet again to carry off the league titleas champions, plus winning the Southern LeagueMerit Cup by scoring more goals than any otherclub in the competition (all 3 divisions). AndyLeitch lead the charge with 36 goals, (the highesttally recorded while Minehead were a SouthernLeague side), closely followed by Jimmy Jenkinsand Derek Bryant who both managed 30. The nextseason, the most successful in it's roller-coasterhistory, saw Minehead finish as runners-up toWimbledon, as well as reaching the 2nd RoundProper of the FA Cup for the first time, when theywere beaten 2-1 by Portsmouth at Fratten Park,
witnessed by more than 16,000 spectators. At thisstage the club were considered to be amongst thetop 6 non league clubs in the country, reflected bybeing invited to represent England in the NonLeague Anglo-Italian Cup competition during 1978.Having won both matches at home, Minehead lostboth return matches in Italy, one of which wasagainst Udinese. Within a few short years Udinesehad progressed through to the Italian 1st Division, with their ground being chosen as a venue for theWorld Cup finals in 1990. More history was created the followingseason when striker Andy Leitch found his name inthe record books by scoring in 6 consecutive FACup matches, equalling Jeff Astle's record. Leitchhad a scorching header hooked off the line withthe keeper beaten during Minehead's 2nd RoundProper tie at home to Exeter City, which wouldhave given him the record outright. Mineheadwere beaten 3-0 by the Devon club, a tie whichattracted the club's second highest homeattendance of 3,050.Though the club were still a cup force to bereckoned with, their stunning strike partnership ofLeitch, Jenkins and Bryant parted company.Struggling to score goals they were relegated fromthe Southern League Premier Division, finishing17th of 20, just one point from safety. Howeverthe name had been put firmly on the non leaguemap. On the occasion of the Southern League'scentenary year (1994) manager Bob Boyd waschosen as one of the top one hundred managers init's history, where his name stands proudlyalongside such names as Malcolm Allison, RonAtkinson and Barry Fry. The 79/80 season saw a restructuring ofthe non-league pyramid, with the “creation” ofthe Alliance Premier League (now the Conference
Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 33
League). The SouthernLeague, losing 13 clubs
in the switch, optedfor aMidland/Southern
divide. Minehead competed inthe Midland Division, and after leadingthe division from January, finally finished asrunners-up to Bridgend. Season 80/81 saw themfinish 12th, however the club were starting toexperience financial problems, and the decisionwas made to withdraw from the Southern Leagueat the end of the 82/83 campaign.Back in the Western League, the team werebrought back to reality with an 8-0 thrashing atFrome Town on the opening Saturday of the newseason. Relegated to the First Division in 1989,the following year saw things get progressivelyworse, finishing bottom of the lower league. With no relegation that season, the blues lived tofight again, and the following season managerAndy Hodgson led a locally based team to theFirst Division Championship, gaining a recordnumber of points. Teenage striker GarethMorgan scoring 44 times in 40 appearances, which remains a Western League record for theclub. Further off the pitch problems soon hitthe club and in the 93/94 season with 6 points
being deducted the side were relegated again, staying in the First Division until 98/99 whenthey won the championship. Their only leaguedefeat came in the final match, away toneighbours Ilfracombe, having been presentedwith the trophy several games earlier. The highpoint of this season again being a lethal strikepartnership, this time between Nick Woon,Gareth Morgan and Jason Charlesworth. Allthree appearing in the Western League’s top sixscorers, with over 30 goals each. On their arrival back in the PremierDivision finances had dried up, with many of thesuccessful team moving on. Woon stayed, andwas again amongst the top scorers in the league, however his goals alone could not prevent theside finishing bottom, avoiding relegation due toa restructuring of the league. The club wererelegated the following season however, andlanguished near the bottom of the First Divisionever since.
At the end of the 2009-10 season theclub finished ten points adrift at the bottom of thetable, and having flirted with relegation for severalseasons were relegated into the Errea SomersetCounty League Premier Division. Robbie Hopkinsremains in charge with Paul Newbold as hisassistant as the club looks to re-establish itself andto build again for the future.
