AXON IN PERSPECTIVE

001

Creating an “axon in perspective”, a form was developed using a 2D collage technique. Subsequent renderings explored form in what is perceived and what is hidden, as well as the lev-els from light to dark. A simplified geometric de-sign was created from the natural light studies

INVERSE LIGHT

Goal: Document and build model of an existing building to scale, focusing on the movement created by the stairs.Building: University Pavilion of University of Cincinnati campus.Team: Mina Lee, Jonathan Wilkinson, Jenn Bethel

Movement in the University Pavilion is shaped by the mirror image of the interior and exterior stairs. Parallel and visible to each other, people within the building or walking outside of the building have full view of each other. Light also contributes to circulating the movement through the building as public areas are exposed to direct daylight while offices are lit by artificial light. Through the building, the majority of the circulation occurs on the stairs, encouraged by the light.

INVERSE LIGHTBased off the University Pavilion, I chose to focus on the effect of light on movement within the structure. Through the glass panes and mullions, direct daylight reaches into the depths of the Pavilion. The taller the height in thte room, the more light there is due to the upper floor walls reflecting the daylight as well as cutting its reach short. As height decreases there is less blocking and the light travels farther but grows weaker. The final model represents teh above under the condition that light is the volume.

BRICK BY BRICKAs a section, we designed a unit, of which we built a hundred to create sculptural structures. Meant to be interactive where people can sit or stand on, while also providing shade.

BRICK BY BRICKTo visually represent the unit, I chose to go for a very 2-D look, contrasting with the actual unit’s voluminous form. The first graphic represents the series of iterations made to reach to the final unit. The final unit is colored in the center, representing that it was not the last idea to be tossed out but an idea we went back to develop further.

The second graphic represents the various ways the units can connect to each other. The text along bottom reads:

This tetris-resembling building unit utilizes strict, yet simple proportions in order to achieve a dynamic range of interlocking orientations. The versatility of the unit allows it to create a multitude of forms and architectural features. Other key characteristics include the unit’s combination of OSB and plywood material. This alternation of material exaggerates the tessellating effect of the unit in arrangements. A duality of flat and tessellating surfaces procure interest and dynamism. The unit is unique in its ability to create arrangements at an unusual 45 degree angle. The trademark “w” shape of the unit creates interesting and enjoyable apperatures, for light and visual interest.

The third shows the abstractual formation that can be created by the units. The representation shows the possibilities with the unit, of which could not be created at the moment due to there being only 100.

This was drawn by hand and then rendered on Illustrator. The other two were created on Illustrator.

NEXUSIn the future, there will be an increase of mobile workers, making it essential to harness the time spent traveling to service productivity. In an ever-growing environmentally conscious society, more workers are taking public transportation. Yet, most cities currently lack efficient transpor-tation. The United States is making an effort to connect major cities by high-speed railways. These trains will travel at top speeds of 300 mph and is projected to hit major cities by 2015. High-speed rail will reduce congestion significantly and provide high-capacity, fast transportation. By creating unique spaces on public trains, travel time will be more productive. Nexus provides the various environments people prefer to work and lets them control the conditions in which they work. Generations Y, Z, and Alpha are predicted to become independent consultants. They desire gaining unique experiences over having a steady job and being loyal to a company. Designing a variety of work environments is the key for keeping our future workers more engaged and productive.

Workers tend to prefer to work in environ-ments that include cafés, libraries, lounge areas, and enclosed spaces. These environments offer a range of noise levels, interaction, and private spaces. The key is to accommodate a wide range of environments within the train, so that any mobile worker, introvert or extrovert, tech savvy or not, can work and be comfortable on the train. The variety of spaces on this train allows for both quick commuter trips, with touch down kiosks, as well as long cross-country trips, with comfortable long-term seating options. The spaces inside the unit reflect the indepen-dent and individual workers of the future. Since mobile workers are on the rise, Nexus offers the option to work and travel through provid-ing group, individual, private, and public spaces. Introverts may work well in the closed off Cega chair or in small groups in the Entente. Extroverts will thrive in the café and presentation lounge areas. Nexus is designed for every user’s needs.

Specific materials were chosen in response to conditions of the train and include gecko surfaces, heat-tech fabric, smart glass with low E, permeable skin and limited but sufficient LED lighting. The gecko material is a non-sticky adhesive which allows all items on horizontal surfaces to stay put as the train both speeds up and slows down for each stop. The thermofabric, which is applied to many of the plush seating surfaces, allows the body heat to be absorbed and harnessed to power small electronics and other technologies in the cab.
