Special canteen
Wow! We’ve had lots of orders for our first special Mexican canteen this Friday. If you are able to assist with the serving of food on Friday, please speak to Tracey Nash and check the canteen
facebook page.
P&C AGM meeting
The next meeting for the P&C will be the Annual general meeting (AGM) on Wednesday 6th March at 6pm in the school library. Everyone is welcome and
encouraged to attend.
The meeting is a great way for new families and existing families to meet and find out about the behind the scenes
activities in the school.
Band update
We’ve had a few glitches getting off the ground with band this term. Apologies to all the keen band students. We will begin band on Monday 25th, with not one teacher, but two! Hamish is a woodwind specialist, and will take flute, clarinet and saxophone sections. David Hood is the brass specialist, he will teach trumpet, trombone, whole band and Euphonium, as well
as choir.
Thanks to all those who have paid their fees in advance, those children
should have received their instruments. We have ordered some new instruments which will be arriving soon, we have lots of keen sax players, and had to buy some extra saxophones to meet
demand.
Dropping off children
Be warned, the police will be targeting Victoria Street in the mornings. Drive around to Boomerang Street for morning drop-
off.
School Photo Day
Our school photo day is scheduled for Monday 18th March. Family photo envelopes are available in the office, and order forms for photos have been sent home. Many of you have already returned your school photo order forms. Thank you for being so
organised!
Scripture and Ethics
We are still chasing a lot of returns of the family forms. We can’t start scripture and ethics classes until you have
returned the forms. Please ensure you have ticked one of the boxes, either scripture, ethics or exemption. The office is having to phone a lot of parents who have failed to complete the form. Please also be aware that exempted students are required to bring a book to
read quietly in the library.
Telephones are down!
One of our phone lines is not operating. Telstra have investigated but we are still not operating on the 6366 3104 line. Please ring 6366 3006 line, and forgive us if the line is busy forgive us for brief conversations, we need to keep the one line open for
incoming calls.
Choir
Choir for senior students has begun this week. We are preparing for the grand opening of the Millthorpe train Station Platform, on the 15th March and learning three train songs. Keep the 15th free to
attend the performance,
and encourage your
children to learn the lyrics!
The Great Easter Chocolate Raffle
Each year, the school organizes an Easter raffle. The raffle draw is a great way to end the term and celebrate Easter. The raffle
raises funds to cover the costs of catering at our many events. Grandparents day, music@millthorpe, carnivals and sporting events, and leaders induction morning, to name just a few. We are ready to start accepting donations towards the raffle. Anything Easter themed can be donated to the office. Chocolate is great, but other items are welcome. Baskets, stationary, activities, toys. etc. Raffle ticket books will be distributed shortly. The draws will take place on Friday 12th April at the conclusion of the Easter
hat parade.
NB Change in
calendar
Heads up, we have changed the MPS Athletics carnival date to Thursday 2nd May. Thursday 4th April is the MPS Cross
country carnival date.

Snow skiing at Millthorpe
Millthorpe PS is participating in Interschools Snowsports Championships this winter. Interschools are a series of snowsports competitions where students compete for their school as part of a team or an individual in any of the 9 discipline events for
both skiers and snowboarders.
Interschools skiing events are open to students in Kindergarten to Year 6 and snowboarding events are open to students in Year 3 and above. Competitors from all ability levels are encouraged to enter, with an emphasis on fun and participation in the initial regional
championships.
Regional competition events will be held at Perisher in 2019 and run
from Tuesday 9th July - Friday 12th
July.
If there are other families who ski, please contact the school or Jacinta 0433 732 742 for more information about how the children can represent Millthorpe on the ski
slopes!

paid. Band fees are $200 per term,
which incudes hire fee.

to be able to offer students a comprehensive opportunity to learn a musical instrument. Our programs need your support to be viable, please consider this opportunity for your children to begin music instruction on an
instrument of their choice.
We have flute, alto saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, and
tenor saxophones available.
School Fees

year by providing all text-books and stationery ready for the first
day.
School fees for 2019 remain unchanged, at $180 per annum
with the following breakdown.
Text books - $25
Online subscriptions - $30
Stationery - $30
Incursion Performances - $50
Voluntary contribution $45
Collecting Students after School
Please assist us at busy home time by collecting your students (who should be sitting down waiting for you, supervised by a duty teacher) and moving out of school grounds to catch up with your friends. Please ensure you keep your children with you, and
ensure they are obeying school
rules while you have a chat.
We are having issues with children who are running through bus lines, playing with the After School Care children, and generally disobeying school rules while parents are having a catch-up chat. It is very difficult for After School Care to properly supervise
and recognise the students who are in their care when others have
randomly joined the group.
Children are not permitted to swing off or sit on metal railings, or climb up craft room ramp railings. This school rule is to keep children safe from serious head injury. It is important to your child's safety that they don’t “play” on the handrails, at any time. Children are not allowed to run under the COLA, through bus lines, or play hand ball or basket ball while bus lines are still waiting
to board.
Thanks for understanding and
keeping children safe!

P&C News The next meeting for the P & C will be the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Wednesday 6th March at
6pm in the school library. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come. The meeting is a great way for
new families and existing families to meet and find out about the behind the scenes activities in the
school.
P&C is a great way to be involved in the school and help the teachers and staff make it a great place for
our kids to learn and grow. Being an executive member (President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secre-
tary) is a rewarding role. Involvement in the P&C is voluntary. An article published by the University of Syd-
ney outlines the 7 benefits of volunteering. https://sydney.edu.au/news-opinion/news/2017/05/03/7-
surprising-benefits-of-volunteering-.html
All parents, carers, grandparents and citizens are therefore encouraged to volunteer with the committee
or through the Markets in April and December. You may just see some of the benefits.
More information on the positions can be found at https://www.pandc.org.au/
At the AGM all roles will be open and everyone in attendance on the night can vote after paying the
50cents ($1 per family) membership. Several positions are confirmed to be vacated so please consider
becoming a member. And or come along and share in a beverage and nibbles and a few laughs. If you
are new to the school, don't hesitate to talk to staff or teachers about what the P&C have done for the
school and your child's class.
Any questions can be directed to the current executive
Danica Bunch (president)
Mark Kingham (vice-president)
Kate Coles (vice-president)
Sam Gaston (treasurer)
Karen Brakell (Secretary)
and via email [email protected]
Millthorpe Public School Debating Team
Selection for our school debating teams is about to be undertaken for 2019. Millthorpe Public School is a successful participant in the Kerri Parkes Western
Region Debating Challenge each year. The selection process is open to students in years 4, 5 and 6, with the debating group meeting every Thursday lunch.
Participating in the competition requires students to contribute to their team’s case and be prepared with their arguments and debating cards, adding to their
homework load. Being part of a debating team has many benefits including:
Increasing learners' confidence, poise, and self-esteem. Providing an engaging, active, learner-centered activity.
Improving rigorous higher order and critical thinking skills. Enhancing the ability to structure and organize thoughts.
If your child is interested in joining the school debating team please encourage them to come along this Thursday to sign up. Our first event for the year will be a debating work shop run by the Arts Unit, this will take place in Orange on March
12th.
