The 2010 Miller and Levine Biology program is one program, but the content is made available through four different groundbreaking pathways:

This guide features an overview of the program components for the Comprehensive On-Level Edition of the program. Components include the following:

The Comprehensive On-Level Text is the standard version of the program. This textbook is for a traditional high school biology class. It provides opportunities for students to interact with the latest biology information while placing an emphasis on meeting standards.

There are eight units in the On-Level version of the Miller & Levine text. The program has been designed so that the most commonly covered national science standards are addressed at the beginning of the book. These standards are covered in the core of the textbook.

Diversity of Live

Big Ideas

This core includes Units 1 through 5.

Additionally, the Diversity of Life: A Visual Guide provides a reference for studying the phylogenic relationships within the three domains of life. This resource may be used to explore the classification and characteristics of various organisms.

Each chapter is developed around a Big Idea. This Big Idea is the unifying factor for all instruction and assessment for the chapter. Notice that the Big Idea for Chapter 10 is Growth, Development, and Reproduction.

Chapter Mystery

Digital Components

Students learn more about the Big Idea by solving a Chapter Mystery. This mystery aligns to the Big Idea and concepts introduced in the chapter lessons. Throughout the chapter, they are introduced to clues that can help them solve the mystery by the end of the chapter. This Chapter Mystery is about what happened when a salamander lost a limb. Students gather clues throughout the chapter to determine the salamander’s fate.

Each chapter includes several inquiry opportunities that allow students to explore concepts relating to the Big Idea. They will have the chance to complete open-ended inquiry and guided inquiry labs. In this activity, students study reproduction and regeneration patterns of planarians.

Throughout the book you are given many opportunities to ensure that your students are moving towards a true understanding of the Big Idea. Each lesson, chapter, and unit ends with an assessment opportunity. This particular quiz helps students prepare for standardized tests.

Biology.com serves as the digital hub for the entire program. Students view lesson reviews, write lesson notes, complete interactive lesson activities, and take online quizzes. It also provides a wealth of digital tools that help plan lessons, edit worksheets and tests, make assignments, assess, and remediate.

Study Workbook

Lab Manuals

Biology.com PLUS is the premium side of Biology.com. Biology.com PLUS provides access to special content such as periodic updates from the program authors and access to virtual labs and activities. Many of the Biology.com resources are also available on CD-ROM and DVD for those users who do not have access to the Internet.

There are two study workbooks available for the Miller & Levine Biology program.

Study Workbook A provides practice for on-level students. Exercises include lesson reviews and summaries, open-ended questions, graphic organizers, cloze exercises, and essay questions.

Workbook B offers students more support and explicit strategies. It is most often used with struggling readers, English Language learners, or students who might need an increased level of support. These tools will help them reinforce content vocabulary, organize lesson information, and summarize key chapter concepts.

There are two versions of the lab manual. Both provide all of the procedures and worksheets to accompany the thirty-five chapter investigations.

The labs in Lab Manual A are for on-level students. Lab Manual A also includes fifteen additional lab activities.

Assessment Program

ELL Handbook

Review

Lab Manual B is recommended for students who need additional support. Many of these lab activities can be conducted with minimal lab equipment.

The Assessment Program Workbook features two versions of the chapter and unit tests.

Give on-level students Test A, which includes a mix of multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, short-answer, science application, and essay questions.

Notice that struggling students perform better on Test B, which features a lower readability level, fewer answer choices for multiple-choice items, and a reduced number of test items.

The ELL Handbook contains in-depth strategies and best practices for teaching science content to English Language Learners.

It provides ELL research and theory and gives concrete examples of how it can be used with the Miller & Levine program.
