MSA’s Class of 2018

Mill Springs’ Class of 2018

On Saturday, May 12 graduates made one last walk up the hill from the Upper School/Communication Arts building to the Tweetie Lewis Moore Student Activity Center, where over 500 family members, friends, teachers, administrators and Alumni cheered their success.

After the opening processional, national anthem and a greeting by MSA’s Board Chair, Bruce Clayton, graduating seniors were treated to an address by alumna, Michelle Bonin (’13), who shared some valuable life lessons she’s learned since her time at MSA.

Other highlights of the program included several seniors who delivered carefully prepared speeches, including many heartfelt thank yous to parents, friends, and teachers; recognition of Andrew Maichle, who earned the distinction of Valedictorian with the highest grade-point-average; and the announce-ment of the Class of 2018 Alumni Ambassador, Elizabeth Goodhew. Jessica Kornheiser helped close the ceremony by delivering the benediction followed by Upper student, Bryce Zimmerman playing “Georgia On My Mind” by Gorrell and Carmichael, as everyone processed out of the gym. After-wards, graduates, families and friends gathered in the Upper School Great Room for a catered recep-tion, cherished moments, and final good-byes. Congratulations to all the graduating seniors. We wish you the best as you continue your journeys.

ALUMNI AMBASSADORElizabeth GoodhewEach graduating class is charged with the selection of an Alumni Ambassador. The role of the Alumni Ambassador is to help facilitate and foster connections between the Alumni from their graduating class and Mill Springs Academy by encouraging them to stay connected to the school and each other in various ways. It is a great honor for the person who is chosen by their fellow classmates to fill this very special position. After receiving instruction on the criteria for the position, which includes among other things, choos-ing an individual who possesses the quality of servant leadership, each graduating senior casts their vote by secret ballot.

AJC AWARD (Best All-Around) Jack AbramSenior who demonstrates leadership qualities, is active in the community and has a winning attitude.

G. PAUL KREHER GUTS AND GLORY AWARD Jessica KornheiserThe “Guts and Glory” Award was established in 2012 in honor of Math teacher, G. Paul Kreher. The “Guts and Glory Award” recog-nizes the MSA student who has confronted and dealt with adversity, whether in school or out, with Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

GAIL JANUS KREHER SENIOR PRESENTATION AWARD Paige NorrisThe Senior Presentation Award was estab-lished in 2015 to honor retiring Senior Research and Composition Teacher, Gail Janus Kreher, for her thirteen years of guiding the Seniors through the Senior Presentation process. Baccalaureate

The night before graduation, MSA’s graduating seniors, along with their proud parents, family members, friends and MSA faculty and staff gathered for an evening of celebration and recognition at the Birmingham United Methodist Church in Alpharetta for Baccalaureate services. Principals acknowledged student accomplishments and triumphs made throughout the year. And as an ongoing MSA tradition, instead of

inviting speakers from outside the Mill Springs’ community, the program featured speeches from graduates who called to mind their reasons for attending MSA, their successes and friendships, and also used the opportunity to thank family, teachers, staff and friends for their valuable support.

Studio Arts Gallery

Each year, MSA’s Fine Arts Department hosts a Studio Arts Gallery in the spring to show off all the amazing artwork that our students create. This year’s event was another huge

success with a steady stream of guests visiting the Stallings Theater throughout the day. Guests participated in several interactive activities including an art scavenger hunt, and voted for their favorite pieces of art. The event concluded with MSA’s senior members of the National Art Honor Society (Paige Norris, Emily Van Aken, and Matt Haverland,) being formally recognized for their commitment to art and to celebrate their futures.

Students Win Big at GISA State Literary Festival

Each year, the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) sponsors the Literary & Music Competitions, generally referred to as “Literary Festival”, where students from Georgia’s

independent schools compete with their peers in the areas of singing, acting, essay writing, spelling, speaking, and piano playing. At the competition, college-level judges give valuable feedback to students and rank them. The top ranked (1st and 2nd place) students go on to compete with the top students from all the other regions in Georgia at a state competition.

Once again, Mill Springs’ students racked up numerous accolades during the 2018 GISA State Literary competition. Garrett Cutchin, Connor Samsky and Bryce Zimmerman went on to represent MSA at the State Literary Festival at Gordon State College on March 20. All three students performed incredibly well against their peers from other independent schools, winning state rankings in the following areas:

First Runner UpGarrett Cutchin | Impromptu Speaking

Fifth PlaceBryce Zimmerman | Boys Vocal Solo

Fifth PlaceConnor Samsky | Spelling

“MSA has been sending students to Literary Festival since 2010, and we’ve had a student represent us at state every year,” said Fine Arts teacher, Kate McElliott. “We’ve had students win 1st place in boy’s solo (Alex Diaz, 2016) and piano (Samuel Mishkin, 2015, 2016, 2017), with many students ranking in the top five in other areas at the state competi-tion. And in 2017, we won first place in our region. We are so proud of each and every one of our students who competed this year. It was very competitive and they represented MSA so well against all AAA schools in our region.” The following is a list of the preliminary results of this year’s Literary Festival, before the state competition in March.

Suwanee Youth Leaders

Congratulations to Upper student, Garrett Cutchin who was selected to be a member of the Suwanee Youth Leaders Class of 2018. Suwanee Youth Leaders (SYL) is an eight-month

leadership program for high school sophomores and juniors who live within the North Gwinnett High School, Peachtree Ridge High School, or Collins Hills cluster districts. Participants gain genuine exposure to local initiatives and community and civic leaders, while also allowing the city to engage with youth providing a strong voice and active role in planning the city’s success.

Students are chosen to participate in SYL based on a combination of the strength of their application, feedback from a student-led selec-tion committee made up of recent SYL graduates, recommendations from teachers and school administrators, academic performance, and extracurricular resume.

Thanks to SYL, said Assistant City Manager Denise Brinson, “We now have a group of young people who have more knowledge of their community and how local government works and the work that goes into building community. The city wanted to develop a real connec-tion with our schools and find a way to meaningfully encourage youth involvement as prescribed in our strategic plan – not just checking a box, but building sincere, authentic relationships.”

Incorporating Technology into Reading

During the final semester of the school year, Lower School students learned how to incorporate technology to enhance their learning in Reading Class. After reading either Bunnicula

or James and the Giant Peach, students learned how to create a multiple-choice quiz using Google Forms. Students then sent their quiz to a partner who read the same book. All the quizzes varied in terms of the key concepts and points that were focused upon, which helped deepen the learning experience of reading the stories.

Chinese Language Students Pass National Proficiency Test

This year, twelve MSA students from Chinese II, III, & IV took part in the first and second levels of the Chinese Proficiency Test, the HSK, at Emory University. All twelve students not

only passed the exam, but three scored at or above 95% with all graduating MSA seniors in Chinese IV passing the 2nd level test. The HSK is an international standardized exam that tests and rates Chinese language proficiency. It assesses non-native Chinese speakers’ abilities in using the Chinese language in their daily, academic and professional lives. The assessment consists of a writing test and a speaking test, which are independent of each other.

Congratulations to the following students who took the exam. We are so proud of all of you have achieved.

HSK Level 1Christian Kelm, Jake Martin, Eli Musgrave, Anthony Papasidero, Rob-ert Papasidero, Jordan Rothberg, Vijay Shah, and Christoper Walker

Students, Staff, and Faculty prepare to make contact with Astronaut Scott Tingle as he flies over head in the ISS at 17,500 mph.

MSA Makes Contact with Astronaut on International Space Station

Students from Mill Springs Academy had the opportunity to speak with astronaut Scott D. Tingle as he traveled in the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday, May 3 at 11:47

am. Tingle, who has been on the ISS since December, was contacted by MSA students using ham radio. The entire MSA community, along with some students from neighboring schools, attended the event which was held on the campus of MSA in the Tweetie Lewis Moore Student Activity Center. The chat between the orbiting astronaut and the students lasted roughly ten minutes since that was the length of time the ISS was in the air space above the U.S. which could be reached by ham radio. Amateur (a.k.a. “ham”) radio is part of an enrichment class taught at Mill Springs and the ‘hams’ at MSA have formed an official amateur radio club. This activity is part of the ARISS (Amateur Radio on the International Space Station) program, which promotes learning opportunities as part of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) initiative at the school.

A huge thank you to the members of the North Fulton Amateur Radio League (NFARL), who have been instrumental in helping to develop MSA’s radio program and were responsible for the technical arrangements for this event. This amazing group of folks also set up a series of educational activities related to amateur radio for students and guest to get involved with before and/or after the actual ARISS radio contact.

Lower School Loves to Read!

Each month Lower School students are required to log at least 400 minutes of reading time. A special party is held at the end of each month to celebrate the students achieving their personal goals

with many going above and beyond by reading close to 1,000 minutes per month. Students are also awarded with a medallion and certificate during Honors Day that states how many total minutes they have read for the year. “I’m so proud of our all of our students who read a total of 126,080 minutes this year!,” said Lower School Principal, Laurie Jones.

The Lower School performed Disney’s Peter Pan, Jr. this spring for parents, friends, and fellow MSA students. “They worked incredibly hard to learn songs, dances, and lines to present the

thirty-minute piece, complete with projected set, costumes, and sound run by Lower School student Eli Jutan,” said Fine Arts teacher, Kate McElliott. “Everyone did such an amazing job and had a ton of fun in the process.” Special thanks to Upper student, Jack Hurtsellers, who assisted in all aspects of the production.

GSPA Honors Student Magazine

MSA’s student magazine, MILK (an acronym which stands for Mustang, Issues, Lifestyle, and Knowledge), received an “Excellent” ranking at this year’s GSPA competition on April

17, 2018. GSPA stands for Georgia Scholastic Press Association and is sponsored by the Grady School of Journalism at the University of Georgia. It has been a beacon and a standard for high school journalists and publications for the last 89 years.

“Out of the eight newsmagazines that placed for General Excel-lence for a Newsmagazine, only one was a private school - Mill Springs Academy,” said Shilpee Kathuria, MSA’s MILK newsmagazine advisor. “The other seven were extremely large and well-reputed (especially for Journalism) public schools including Clarke Central in Athens, Heritage High in Conyers, Henry W. Grady in Atlanta, and Moun-tain View High School in Lawrenceville. The MILK Staff is beyond thrilled. We were really just hoping to get critiques to help make our publication better but ended up with such a high recognition.

Spring Musical Catch Me If You Can

This year’s MSA spring musical was Catch Me If You Can, which follows the story of a con-artist, Frank Abagnale, Jr. Frank, played by Sophomore Collins Losson, runs away from home

to escape his parents’ divorce and turns to small scams to scrape by. Soon he’s cashing bad checks and the FBI, led by Agent Carl Hanratty, played by Sophomore Henry Wallace, is hot on his trail. With a jazz/swing music score and plenty of comedy, the show was a smash success with the full cast and crew putting on two public performances attended by great crowds as well as a private showing for MSA’s Upper School. One of the biggest surprises of the show was seeing Music Director Kate McElliott onstage as Frank Jr’s mother, Paula. This year’s production consisted of twelve student performers singing and dancing, fifteen more working backstage on lights, sound, and other tech needs, and countless others contributing to the posters, T-shirts, prop and set construction. “All in all, I would say that over one hundred people contributed to the ultimate success of the show,” said Theater Director, Jamie Fambrough.

The Greatest Show!

In May, students from MSA’s Improv Class and various soloists from CommArts and the Upper School performed in the Fine Arts Showcase. Performers were joined by their families and friends

in the PVA Amphitheater where they put on various performances under the general theme of “the circus” in honor of the hit movie, “The Greatest Show!” It was a fun evening, and all the students involved were inspiring in their routines.

The Spring Band Concert is always a highlight of many events that cap off the end of the school year.

Middle Students Study Earthquakes

This spring, 5th and 6th graders did a deep dive into the subject of earthquakes in their science classes. Did you know that about 8,000 earthquakes occur every day? Although most of them are

too small to notice, the stronger ones can shake the Earth and cause a lot of damage to buildings, roads, and other structures. When an earthquake occurs, seismic waves carry the energy from the earthquake away from the focus (the area beneath Earth’s surface where the earthquake is triggered) through Earth’s interior and across the surface. There are 3 categories of seismic waves: Primary waves (P waves) which arrive first; secondary waves (S waves), which come after the primary wave; and surface waves, which are transformations of primary waves and secondary when they reach the surface. The surface waves can produce severe ground movement. To help the students get a better idea of how primary and secondary seismic waves move, they participated in an activity using Slinky’s to simulate the movement of primary and secondary waves through Earth’s interior. Students also used compasses and protractors to find the epicenter of an earthquake and used marshmallows and toothpicks to build an earthquake proof structure.

Spring Band Concert

On Tuesday and Wednesday, sixty three MSA students from grades 5-12 entertained friends, families, and fellow students in their annual Spring Band Concert. The show

began with Concert Band, who rocked everyone’s faces off with the Foo Fighters, Tears for Fears, and AC/DC! Afterwards Symphonic Band took the stage, jamming out to Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd, Saint Motel, and Journey.

SPORTS

Golf

Congratulations to MSA’s golf team for taking home the AAC Championship which was held at Steel Canyon golf course in Sandy Springs. Overall, the team had a great run this year and

finished the regular season with a record of 7–3. “We had a young team this year,” said Coach Michael Smith. “Our only senior, Parker Weyant, along with Yates Smith, Vijay Shah, Maddie Hahn, and Andrew Buchberger, were our main golfers. But we grew the team with younger 7th and 8th graders who practiced with us all year and participated in at least one match. These younger golfers are really talented and as they progress, they’re going to really help us in future years.”

Track and Field

The track and field team had another record-

breaking season this year with many new athletes joining veteran Mustangs to achieve great things. This season was full of many achievements including Upper School Juniors, Bailey Grunwald and Jacobi Garrett both smashing school records in the girls triple jump

and boys long jump and triple jump respectively. The team finished the season with the boy’s team taking second place and the girls taking third place at the AAC Championship with five athletes qualifying for the State meet in Albany, GA (Christian Kelm, Jonathan Jeter, Jacobi Garrett, Jody Cleveland, and Tyler Goodwyn. Congratulations to Jacobi Garrett who took home second place in long jump and first place in triple jump at the State meet.

Coaches Lisa Imsand and Angela White also welcomed a new coach,

Maritza Silva. “Maritza is an MSA graduate who currently holds the school record in girls shot put and discus,” said Lisa. “She did a fantastic job training the new throwers on the team.”

Baseball

The 2018 baseball Mustangs entered the AAC Championship in second place with a 2-3 record. However, the team failed to clinch the championship against Cottage School who

took home the trophy after winning 14 to 3. “This was a year full of improvement,” said third baseman and Senior, Noah Terpstra. “We had one win…we made it to the championship…fought hard but didn’t make it. I will miss this team and wish them the very best as they vie for the AAC crown in 2019.

TennisThe Mill Springs Tennis team got off to a running start with coaches Vaidehi Rallapalli and Nellie Jackson focusing on drills this season to enhance the skills of each team member. While they had a few rainy days with cold and long evenings on the tennis court, the team managed to tuck in a couple of wins during regular season play before going into the AAC Tournament. “Everyone on the team improved immensely this year,” said Vaidehi. “The team not only won the AAC Championship, Alli Kogoy is the AAC Girls All Conference Champi-on and Nick Kiely and Richard Hall clinched the AAC Boys Doubles Championship.” Nick Kiely also earned a spot in the State Champion-ship in Macon, GA.
