    PHYSICAL SECURITY

    A. Physical security measures include:

    1. Barriers such as:

    a. Human - Security guardsb. Animal - Guard dogs

    c. Natural - Mountains, rivers,

    lakes, swamps, desertsd. Energy - Electrical or

    electronic (alarms, lights)

    A. Physical security measures include:

    B. A unit commander must know hisunit and must take adequatemeasures to insure physical security.

    PERSONNEL SECURITY

    A. Personnel Security includes all measures common to allmilitary units - security clearance, badge and passsystem and security instructions.

    B. An intelligence unit encounters other problems such as

    the visits made by uncleared and even unidentifiedpeople who give and obtain information. Such personsmust be treated courteously, but must be restrainedfrom roaming unaccompanied through unit offices.

    C. Persons to be employed in an intelligence unit must bechecked to be sure that they are not security risks andmust be continually checked to ensure that their statushas not changed.

    DOCUMENT SECURITY

    A. Problems of an intelligence unit arecomparatively greater, not only because of therelatively large volume of classified material,but also because of the sensitivity of theinformation.

    B. Measures are connected with the handling,transmission, storage and destruction ofclassified documents.

    C. In tactical situations, the unit commander'ssecurity problems are greatly increased.

    OPERATIONAL SECURITY

    A. Operational security includes the decision as well as theaccomplishment of necessary measures as to whetherthe unit will operate covertly or overtly.

    B. It also includes measures for maintaining the security of

    undercover agents, informants, vehicles andsafehouses.

    C. One of the best methods to accomplish operationalsecurity is to limit the knowledge of covert operations toan absolute minimum.

    D. The identity of unit informants must be protected at allcost, both for their own welfare and for their continuedeffectiveness as sources of intelligence information.

    COMMUNICATION SECURITY

    A. Security hazards are inherent in electronic

    devices, because transmissions can be

    intercepted, overheard and recorded.

    B. Personnel commit more security violations overtelephones than through the actual loss of

    documents.

    C. Communication between agents in the field

    must be protected, otherwise the entire

    operation of a unit may be compromised.
