Dear Parents and Community MIKE HIND Next term, our senior students will be competing in the annual T20 Master Blaster Cup. In preparation for this event, Mike Hind is conducting two cricket skills sessions with our students. On Monday, Mike spent an hour with the seniors and half an hour with the juniors teaching and reinforcing skills such as bowling, catching and positioning. Mike will return in Week 10 for another session with our students. FATHER’S DAY What a fabulous Father’s Day afternoon we had!! We had a great turn out of special people who enjoyed a delicious sausage sizzle for lunch before being pampered and entertained by their child/ren. Everyone was treated to a facial and had the opportunity to jump into the photo booth, decorate a Frisbee, read a book, paint a picture and compete in the baton race. Thank you very much to Miss Huggins for organising this event and to all of our staff for your assistance. Head to our website to view all of the gorgeous photos. NAPLAN READINESS TEST In preparation for NAPLAN Online in 2019, we were required to conduct a NAPLAN Readiness Test. The purpose of this test was to see if our infrastructure was prepared and our bandwidth could cope with the usage required. The testing went off without a hitch and it appears that as a school, we are prepared for NAPLAN Online in 2019. SURVEY Thank you to all of those parents who took the time to complete the National Schools Opinion Survey recently. We appreciate your feedback. SCHOOL SPORTS CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to Eliza Seymour, Summer Lewis and Heidi Seymour who all qualified at Eneabba Cross Country to compete at the School Sports WA Primary Cross Country event earlier this term. All three students competed to the best of their ability and placed well. A special mention to Summer who qualified 6 th in her age group which means she has been invited to compete at special tryouts next year for a place in the state team. We wish her all the best. ASSEMBLY Our last assembly for the term is being held next Tuesday, 11 September, at 8:50am. The senior students will entertain us with their item and the juniors will present their Bring and Brag. A P&C meeting will be held after classroom visits. ATHLETICS Last Friday, we held our Faction Carnival at the Miling Oval. It was a great event with the students having many opportunities to compete against their peers and display excellent sportsmanship. We had a lot of parents and community members turn up and provide support from the sideline. Thank you very much to everyone who helped in the lead up, throughout the day and afterwards. Many hands definitely make light work! Congratulations to Blue team on winning and to all of our individual winners. Next Friday, we are hosting the NEDSSA Carnival which I’m sure will be another brilliant day. Connued next page ... Thank you all for your support and generosity on the Fiver for a Farmer day. I’m pleased we were able to do something, even though it was small, to look after the farmers over East.

For BUZ in the Junior room that day we were rehearsing how to manage conflict with

friends and thinking about apologies and forgiveness. “Forgiveness is the glue that

repairs broken friendships” was a key message and we thought about how not

forgiving can hurt us and our relationships. We also discussed the power of saying

sorry. Kids enjoyed stories and songs around these themes. I’m looking forward to

consolidating these skills and thinking further about responding to meanness from

others this week.

Thank you for your support, Wil

SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

Yesterday, we held our annual open meeting where we discussed the 2018-2020 Business Plan and finalised our targets. Members were updated on the School Board training which was held in Week 4 with Matthew Osborne, went through the School Board Self-Assessment survey and were presented with an updated financial report. The School Board Chair, Paul White, presented his annual report which has been included for your reading. The past year the Board has been very busy developing our 2018 – 2020 Business Plan as well as updating a number of school policies such as our Library, Internet and School Dress Code. We’ve updated the Board’s Code of Conduct and Terms of Reference to align with the latest from the Education Department and endorsed the new school hats. The Board has developed a new Board Self-Assessment document which will be used yearly to reflect on the Board’s growth and identify areas for improvement. We helped develop questions for our student, staff and parent National School Opinion Surveys. Attending Board training at Miling alongside Moora, Kalannie and Dalwallinu School Board representatives has kept us busy too.

This year we had a new parent representative, Mr Kade Georgy, join our school board and Mrs Nikki McCuish re-join our board. I would like to congratulate our two staff, Miss Ashlyn Siviour and Mrs Susan Dennis, on their nominations for the WA Education Awards. It’s a credit to them and all the staff at Miling Primary School, the incredible work they put in to educate our students. It’s inspiring to work with people so focused on our student’s education and wellbeing.

Thank you to the staff and the Board for their contribution this year, it’s been a pleasure to work with you all.

Colds

Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:

Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands

straight afterwards.

Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.

Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)

Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.

Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods. Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold. Differences between colds and influenza ‘the flu’:

Symptoms of a cold usually include a runny or stuffy nose, a sore throat and a moist cough.

With influenza ‘the flu’, the virus is more debilitating and the symptoms last longer than with a cold.

Common symptoms of influenza include headache, body aches and pains, fatigue, weakness, and a dry or moist cough. A runny or stuffy nose and a sore throat are less common than with a cold. The flu can lead to serious complications, which can be fatal. You can help prevent influenza ‘the flu’ by getting your child vaccinated each year. Vaccinations are free for children aged 6 months to less than 5 years of age.

Quick Tip

What to do if your child gets a cold: No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more com-fortable:

Rest: This need not be in bed. Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water, milk or juice, or ice blocks to suck for older children. If your child has symptoms of the flu or you have concerns about their health, please contact your GP, or ring healthdirect on 1800 022 222 for further advice www.healthdirect.gov.au.
