SCHOOL, HOME & COMMUNITY – PARTNERS IN LEARNING Valuing excellence in education & people who are nice to know
Safe Responsible Respectful Engaged
Project Learning I have been really impressed visiting 3/4R recently, they have been completing a variety of project based learning activities for writing. Their most recent is a book of published works on the Macquarie Island Parakeet. I have included a few below. The authors are Parker, Lara and Charli. They have been really enthusiastic about their writing and sharing this with me. Keep up the great work!
I am always impressed and like to encourage students to be proud of their learning and the gains they make on a regular basis. I had Melanie show me some great work she was doing on the Wildebeest in the Serengeti and Annabelle and Zoe show me some of their class writing. Keep up the great work!
Helping your child with Phonic and Phonemic Awareness Phonics is about making the connections between printed letters (and combinations of letters) and speech sounds. For example, children show their phonics knowledge when they are asked to point to the letter ‘m' and make the sound. Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear and say the sounds in words. For example, children show their phonemic awareness when they listen for and say the three sounds they hear when the teacher says 'mat'. This is such an important indicator of reading success but is often not well understood. Phonics and phonemic awareness connect when a child reads and spells. Phonemic awareness helps children to understand and use the alphabet to read and spell. Here are some ways you can help your child have fun with letters and sounds:
Read with your child every day – read to them, read with them and let them read to you. Help your child learn letter names and say the sounds they make, eg play letter/sound games, say
rhymes, use alphabet cards and charts. Help your child identify letters and words in signs, posters, etc, and talk about the sounds that
different letters make. Encourage your child to hear and say the sounds in words. Help them to listen for the individual
sounds in words, pull them apart and put them together. Ask your child to find letters that they can name, eg in their own name and in the names of family
members and friends, or while shopping at the supermarket. Play word games such as Junior Scrabble or Boggle or give them a baking tray with some magnetic
letters. Try writing cards to family and friends and lists of different events (birthdays) or items (shopping)
together.
SMS for Absence Chittaway Bay PS will be initiating a trial of an SMS absence notification from next Monday for the final two weeks of term. This will mean that if your child is absent and there is no reason already provided, you will receive an SMS notification at approximately 11am. Bus Bay Parking There has been a recent change to bus timetables which has resulted in the arrival of some early buses. While the bus bay rules remain the same, with parking before 8:30am allowed, I would just want everyone to ensure they are mindful of this and remain safe. There are at least two buses that arrive in the bus bay between 7:50 and 8:00am. Also there have been a number of cars issued with a fine due to rangers being present. Please ensure you use the car parks across the road from 8.30am – 9.30am and 2.30pm – 3.30pm. Parking Support Signage Council has recently reviewed wording on the “No Parking” support signage for school fence areas. The wording on the new signs has been changed to reflect the meaning of “No Parking”. New corflute signs for school fences will be delivered to our school over the coming weeks. Further advice will be provided to us to share with the community in this area. The specifics are that you can stop for only 2 minutes and you must stay within 3 metres of your vehicle. Many thanks for your support around the important matter of road safety for our school students. Dogs Generally any animals on site present a risk to students. Dogs are not permitted on site for a variety of reasons, mostly related to Workplace Health and Safety, unpredictability and the necessity to keep our students safe. This excludes Seeing Eye dogs and companion dogs. Please refrain from bringing your pet dog onto site. We appreciate your cooperation on this matter. Positive Manners I occasionally get positive feedback from community or visitors. I obviously love receiving this kind of feedback. I recently was told on two separate occasions how well-mannered the students at Chittaway Bay PS are towards members of the community. A community member mentioned that she has worked in several schools and the friendly responses and use of manners from our students has given her a positive attitude towards the school. A lovely grandmother, also commented on how well behaved our students were at the 3-6 assembly. I like to talk to the students about high expectations at assembly and representing CBPS proudly. This type of feedback is not just a reflection on the school but a credit to our lovely families who instil good manners at home. Keep it up Chittaway Bay PS. On that note, have a wonderful week of learning CBPS.
