Directions: Read the following short story carefully and then answer the questions and fill in thegraphic organizer.

Father of the Zapatista MovementBy Charla Jerome

Emiliano Zapata was a rational leader who tried to lead the people of southern Mexico out ofpoverty. He was intelligent and only led his men into battle when he could foresee a victory. He wasrealistic and knew when to play politics and when to fight. Zapata was born on August 8, 1879, in thevillage of Anenecuilco, Morelos, Mexico. At the age of 18 he had to take over the family’s small farmafter the death of his father. The rest is history, or as some say… legend.

Sugar cane production was on the rise in southern Mexico and Emiliano was a good farmer. He was elected president of the village’s defense committee and represented their rights before Diaz, then the president-dictator of Mexico. At this time, large plantation owners were beginning to take theland of the small farmer. These small farmers would lose everything and would be forced to work forthe rich land owners. Zapata first showed his superior ability as a fighter and leader during this time ofconflict. He led re-division of land and occupation of land, peacefully.

In 1910 Francisco Madero started a revolution against Diaz. He said he would supportreturning land to small farmers. Zapata believed in this and began organizing local citizens into smallbands of revolutionaries. On November 18 the first shots of the Mexican Revolution were fired.Zapata’s small armies became know as Zapatistas and took the offensive.

The Zapatistas fought mainly south of Mexico City. They were a fierce band of revolutionariesand took the town of Cuautla. Soon after, the Treaty of Ciudad Juarez was signed and President Diazwas ousted. Francisco Leon de la Barra became acting president but Zapata didn’t like him so thestruggle continued. In 1911 Madero became president and met with Zapata, the former allies partedangrily. During this time Zapata began using the slogan, “Land or Liberty.” In 1913 Madero wasousted and Carranza’s moderates were put into power. Now there were three main powers in Mexico:Carranza around Mexico City, Pancho Villa’s fighters to the north, and Zapata’s fighters to the south.

On November 24 Emiliano Zapata ordered his Liberation Army of the South (their new name)to overtake Mexico City. Carranza knew he would not be able to take all of Mexico with Zapata aliveso he set a trap for him. On April 10, 1919, Carrranza’s trap worked and Zapata was shot and killedby federal soldiers. Legends about Zapata swirled after his assassination, good and bad, but he trulymade a difference for the small landowner and the Department of Agriculture in Mexico. EmilianoZapata truly lived by his words, “Better to die on one’s feet than to live on one’s knees.”

Pancho VillaBy Charla Jerome

Folk hero… that is how many Mexicans remember Doroteo Arango Arambula. He was born on June 5, 1878, in Durango, Mexico and was given the nickname Franciscoor Pancho. Pancho Villa became one of the most important leaders in the Mexican Revolution and aprovisional governor for the state of Chihuahua in 1913 and 1914. As the “Centaur of the North” hewas a cavalry general who successfully led his troops to victory all over northern Mexico.

Villa used strategies such as propaganda and firing squads against other allies, took haciendaland for the peasants and soldiers, robbed trains, and printed his own money called fiat to pay for hiscause. Like fellow soldier Zapata to the south, Villa’s northern cause was to protect the small farmerfrom the large landowners. He did this well by quickly moving troops by train, cavalry and artilleryattacks, and recruitment of other army’s soldiers. Many of his military strategies are still used today.

It is believed that Villa’s anger against the hacienda owners was stirred when his sister wasraped by one. Pancho confronted the man and shot him dead; this began his career as a bandit. Hehelped oust then President Diaz and start the Mexican Revolution. Madero later became president andsentenced Villa to execution to get rid of him but his execution was changed to just a prison sentence.Pancho used prison to improve his reading and writing skills and later escaped.

Pancho Villa’s greatest fame and success came when he helped oust Victoriano Huerta, a rivalmilitary power. He supposedly attacked with 8 men, 2 pounds of coffee, 2 pounds of sugar, and 500rounds of rifle ammunition. Villa raised money by forcing assessments on the hacienda owners and trainrobberies. He then became provisional governor of the state of Chihuahua.

Villa’s military skills began to fail him in 1915 when he was defeated by General Obregon.Pancho also led raids into New Mexico and began to attack Americans because he felt betrayed byUnited States President Wilson. Wilson retaliated with America’s first ever air combat mission with lightairplanes. The attack was finally called off after being declared a failure. Villa’s last major raid againstCiudad Juarez was in 1919.

Pancho Villa’s legend lives so strongly because he was assassinated in 1923 in Parral,Chihuahua in his car. It has never been proven who was responsible for Villa’s death, although manyhave claimed responsibility. His legend includes Pancho being a lover… of ice cream and women.Legend claims he had as many as 26 wives. Legend claims that Villa never drank alcohol and oncechoked on a toast of brandy. Legend says he loved children and wherever he found them gathered toplay he built schools. The legend of Pancho Villa merely grows and continues to work for those inMexico in need.

Ancient Aztec CivilizationBy Charla Jerome

At the height of its power the Aztec empire ruled much of what is now Mexico from about 1428until 1521. The Aztec region stretched from the centrally located Valley of Mexico east to the Gulf ofMexico and south to Guatemala. Tenochtitlan, the largest and greatest city in the world at the time, wasthe Aztec Capital and was located where Mexico City is today. The Aztecs took great pride in art andtrade. After the fall of the empire, the Aztec civilization remained an important influence on today’sMexican culture.

Aztec society was highly structured. Groups or families claiming a common ancestor werecalled calpulli. Each calpulli had its own government, schools, temples, storehouses for goods, andarmory to hold their weapons. If members committed a crime or didn’t pay their debts, they becameslaves. Most common citizens were farmers growing corn, flowers, squash, and vegetables. The Aztecs worshiped the sun god(also the god of war), the rain god and the god of wind and learning. The people believed that thesegood gods had to be kept happy to help control the evil gods. Human sacrifices were made for thispurpose. Usually prisoners of war were used as sacrifices and sometimes Aztec soldiers wouldvolunteer to be sacrificed for important rituals. It was believed that the rain god preferred children assacrificial victims. The Aztecs would sacrifice a single victim or often many at one time.
