Role-Play Tips

In a role-play, you pretend to be someone real in a real situation. Here are some tips for a good role-play:

· Understand your topic.· Present the most important ideas and information about the topic.· Write a script that shares the ideas in an interesting way.· Write and memorize your script carefully.· Rehearse your presentation.· Speak loudly and clearly.· Use physical gestures and movement on stage.· Portray each role to show information, attitudes, and feelings.· Use costumes that are simple and effective.· Include simple staging, scenery, and lighting that helps tell your story but doesn't distract from it.

Other Tips

If you and your group have other ideas for making role-plays effective, write them in the space below.

Disaster Buzz Groups

After researching and role-playing information about a Canadian disaster, discuss your findings, experiences, and reactions with your classmates. Use these prompts to guide your discussion.

A Few Guidelines

In order to make your discussion time useful and productive, consider the following:

›› Make sure every group includes at least one member from each disaster research group.›› Appoint a leader to help direct the conversation and keep it going.›› Allow everyone to speak and be an active listener.›› Be invitational, not confrontational. Avoid put downs and negative comments.›› Speak clearly and succinctly.›› Stay on topic.›› Consider making notes to help you remember good ideas, facts, expressions, and points of view. ›› Be prepared to share the results of your discussion with members of other groups.

Some Key Questions to Consider

1. In your opinion, what is the most memorable moment from your disaster? Why?

2. How did the disaster affect people?

3. What was the immediate result of the disaster?

4. What lessons do you think people can learn from this event?

5. How do you think you would react in a disaster?

6. What types of disaster do you fear the most? Why?
