Canadian Disasters
Project Outline
Description: Working in a small group, research one of the following Canadian disaster stories on the CBC Radio and Television Web site: The Saguenay Flood, The Halifax Explosion, The Ice Storm of 1998, The Ocean Ranger Disaster, The Wrath of Hurricane Hazel, and Red River Rising: Manitoba Floods. Keep a research folder as part of your completion of the project and use your research to prepare a role-play based on being a witness to or a participant in the event. Present your role-plays to the class.

Role-Play Tips
In a role-play, you pretend to be someone real in a real situation. Here are some tips for a good role-play:
· Understand your topic.· Present the most important ideas and information about the topic.· Write a script that shares the ideas in an interesting way.· Write and memorize your script carefully.· Rehearse your presentation.· Speak loudly and clearly.· Use physical gestures and movement on stage.· Portray each role to show information, attitudes, and feelings.· Use costumes that are simple and effective.· Include simple staging, scenery, and lighting that helps tell your story but doesn't distract from it.

Disaster Buzz Groups
After researching and role-playing information about a Canadian disaster, discuss your findings, experiences, and reactions with your classmates. Use these prompts to guide your discussion.
A Few Guidelines
In order to make your discussion time useful and productive, consider the following:
›› Make sure every group includes at least one member from each disaster research group.›› Appoint a leader to help direct the conversation and keep it going.›› Allow everyone to speak and be an active listener.›› Be invitational, not confrontational. Avoid put downs and negative comments.›› Speak clearly and succinctly.›› Stay on topic.›› Consider making notes to help you remember good ideas, facts, expressions, and points of view. ›› Be prepared to share the results of your discussion with members of other groups.
