Tinker and the Primes 2009 Attracts Participants from Thirty-Nine States

Leadership 2010 Applications Due December 4th

Leadership Midwest City is a program designed to prepare leaders for volunteer positions of public responsibility and effective leadership. The program seeks to develop participant’s knowledge and skills through a series of sessions by leading citizens and specialists in selected fields. The class meets from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Thursday afternoons beginning with a full day orientation on Friday, January 29, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Graduation will be in April or May. For more information about the Leadership Midwest City program or for an application, please contact the Chamber office at 733-3801.

The Fifth annual Tinker and the Primes National Business Event was held at the Sheraton MWC Hotel at the Reed Conference Center November 16th-18th. Preliminary numbers indicate the event attracted an estimated registration of 760 business, military, education and government leaders. More than 420 companies, organizations or units from 39 states and one foreign country (Germany), were represented. The event featured 80 exhibitors. According to Event Director David Burnett, “Attendance was smaller

this year, however, revenue was up and the event has produced business opportunities for our attendees and exhibitors.” When we hear stories of substantially reduced attendance and even cancellation of other national events, including the cancellation

of a somewhat similar event at Warner-Robins, Georgia, we feel very blessed by the support we have received and the results we were able to achieve this year. We truly appreciate the support from the Pentagon, Tinker AFB, our advisory committee, all of our sponsors, the City of Midwest City and participants,” Burnett added.

Russ Howard, Director, Engineering and Technical Management Directorate, OC-ALC; Bob Conner, Executive Director, Oklahoma Aerospace Institute; Alan F. Estevez, Acting Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Logistics and Materiel Readiness) and Major General P. David Gillett Jr., Commander, Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center, Tinker Air Force Base; at the Keynote luncheon.

Jim Newport and MWC Fire Chief Randy Olsen presented a fire department coin to St. Philip Neri student Curtis Blunt Jr. November 19th. Curtis’ dad, Master Chief Curtis Blunt, is stationed on the U.S.S. Stennis and sent back a picture taken on a recent trip of civic leaders of him with Chief Olsen on the carrier. Curtis’ class watched as he was taken on a trip around the block in the fire engine.

Military Quarterly Awards Program

The Midwest City Chamber of Commerce originated a Quarterly Awards program over 26 years ago for the Air Force which now also includes the Navy personnel. You can show your support by participat-ing in the program that recognizes our military service men and women for exemplary performance. Award winners receive promotional items, cash, savings bonds, gift certificates, etc. from participating sponsors. Your company can help by providing any of the above items. If you are interested in learning more about this program or serving on the Military Awards Committee, please call Jennifer Crowel at 733-3801.

Small Business Roundtable

Participants at the October 7th Small Business Roundtable were given an overview of the purpose of the meeting and some statistics about small businesses. They were then broken into 4 groups and sent around the room to answer posted questions about challenges they face and how the Chamber could help them in their business. This information will be implemented into the Chamber Program of Work. Small Business Roundtable discussion events will be scheduled quarterly in 2010.

Members of the Rose State College SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) have asked us to host a canned food drive in the Chamber lobby. The Let’s Can Hunger Challenge, sponsored by the Campbell Soup Company, is a competition that

provides SIFE teams around the world the opportunity to develop and execute hunger relief strategies. The Chamber will collect food throughout the competition. On pick up dates the SIFE students will collect the donations. The non-perishable food items will then be taken to the City Rescue Mission.

Please bring your donations in before the scheduled dates listed below.

Pick up dates: November 24, 2009 December 2, 2009 December 11, 2009
