The school is a self-supporting, non-profit organization designed to serve the adults and youth of Midland Park and surrounding communities. The Midland Park Public Schools support the legislation guaranteeing each person equal education opportunity regardless of race, color, creed, religion, sex, ancestry, national origin, or social or economic status, and guarantee each person the opportunity to enroll in the courses in this brochure. The Midland Park Continuing Education program is one of the largest of its type in northern New Jersey, and is open to registrants from the entire region. 1. SENIOR CITIZENS — Persons 62 and over are eligible for a 10% discount on selected courses. Discount does not apply to trips, shows one-night courses or courses offered at Glen Rock Commu-nity School or Ramsey Community School. Special discount applies to selected courses offered at Ramsey Community School. Please indicate “Senior Citizen” and date of birth when registering. 2. ROOM ASSIGNMENTS posted first nights of classes on tv monitor above MPCE office door. (Sub-ject to change) 3. REFUNDS — Tuition will be refunded only under the following conditions:*If a course in which the registration is insufficient is cancelled.*If the Director closes registration due to limitationson enrollment, facilities or for other justifiable causes.*Refunds for withdrawals (less $15) will be issued only if notification (by phone or mail) is given 5 days or more prior to the beginning of the course. Refunds (less $15 per registrant) for show trips, day trips & overnights, will be given only if the seat or reservation can be resold and the event is sold out. Deposits for overnight trips are non-refundable. NO tuition fees will be refunded for any reason with-in 5 days prior to the first meeting of a class or after a class has begun. 4. INCLEMENT WEATHER — Closing due to storms developing during the day will be announced over radio station WOR Radio 710AM, or log onto

www.mpsnj.org. Make-up dates are provided for all canceled classes. If public school classes are closed during the day, no night classes will be held. MAKE-UP CLASSES — A make-up session has been scheduled into the calendar in the event of snow closing, teacher’s absence, or class cancellation. It is NOT for individual absences of the student.8. STUNNING STATEN ISLAND FEE: $92Lunch at Pier 76Thursday, May 7We’ll take a narrated ride on the Staten Island Ferry featuring views of Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty and even Bayonne. At the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, we’ll see the John Noble Maritime Art Collection and learn about the nautical history of New York. At Snug Harbor, we’ll also find tranquility on a guided tour of the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden. The largest such garden in the US was created in 1989 by a team of 40 Chinese artisans. We’ll have pizza lunch at Pier 76, which stands out in the borough where 35% of the population is of Italian origin. Tour led by Paul Boddy. GREAT FALLS OF THE PASSAIC NATIONAL PARK, FEE: $92PATERSON MUSEUMLunch at Brownstone Restaurant Thursday, May 14We’ll see the falls from a new overlook and hear a ranger tell how Alexander Hamilton founded the first planned industrial city. The falls powered dozens of mills that made Paterson a leader in the Industrial Revolution and still provide 25% of the city’s energy. The surprisingly cool Paterson Museum exhibits revolutionary technologies of the 1800’s when Paterson was the manufacturing capital of the US. On this guided tour, we’ll learn about the men who made the first modern submarine, perfected the revolver, and transformed the silk industry. THE “NEW” EMPIRE STATE BUILDING, FEE: $95EATALY AND THE HIGH LINETuesday, May 19Experience the “New Empire State Building.” After a 165 million dollar renovation we enjoy the restored magnificent lobby, the renovated museum with amazing exhibits where we will learn about the construc-tion and history of this architectural masterpiece. We continue on our tour to the 86th floor observation deck where we experience a 360 degree view of NYC and beyond with floor to ceiling windows. Then it’s time for lunch at Eataly, a vibrant Italian Marketplace which has an outstanding array of cafes, restau-rants, bars and shopping and unique kitchen products for sale. After a delicious lunch (on your own) we walk off those calories by taking a self-guided walk on the High Line where we will see breath-taking views of NYC, sculptures and gardens. A special NYC adventure! Please wear comfortable walking shoes as there is a considerable amount of walking. Trip led by Melinda Scarso. GROUNDS FOR SCULPTURE, HAMILTON TWP, NJ - FEE: $129LUNCH AT RATS RESTAURANTThursday, May 21Grounds For Sculpture is a 42-acre sculpture park, museum, and arboretum which opened to the public in 1992, and has become a premier New Jersey cultural destination. Founded by artist and philanthropist Seward Johnson II, the venue presents and conserves an exceptional collection of contemporary sculp-ture, and provides rotating exhibitions in six indoor galleries with works by Seward Johnson and other artists. Rat’s Restaurant is located on the grounds, and was conceptually designed by Johnson with an Im-pressionist Claude Monet-styled atmosphere. The scenery surrounding the restaurant features Johnson’s own impressionist-inspired sculptures, including a bridge over a lily pond which is an homage to Monet’s painting Water Lilies and Japanese Bridge (1897-1899). The restaurant is named after the character “Rat-ty” from Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows which is one of Seward Johnson’s favorite books. Or did you paint in oils a while ago and you want to get back to it? This is the class for you! This class com-bines beginners with experienced artists. Learn about using AutoSum to enter summing formulas for rows and columns. Learn about AutoFill to copy hundreds of formulas. Learn to work with spreadsheet projects that involve several separate sheets, that is, 3-dimensional workbooks. CHAIR YOGA FOR EVERYONE FEE: $82Tuesday, 6:00-7:00 p.m.(8 sess. beg Feb. 25)(no class 4/7) Midland Park H.S.Chair yoga is a form of yoga that can be practiced sitting on a chair, or standing using a chair for support. The chair replaces the yoga mat allowing you to take advantage of yoga’s wonderful fitness and health potential. Anyone who sits in a chair for most of the day, or cannot get on the floor for whatever reason (working long hours, weight issues, inflexibility, lack of muscle tone, wheelchair bound, etc) can learn to improve circulation, strength and flexibility from a seated position. Rest provides our body the opportunity to renew, heal and restore. There are physical and emotional benefits to this practice. By using props in the postures, it allows one to feel the restorative power that will do wonders to the body. HIKING IN LOCAL MOUNTAINS FEE: $69Saturday, 9:30 a.m. start (4 hikes April 18, 25, May 9, 16)Offered in cooperation with Glen Rock Community School. During our trips, you learn the history of the Ramapo Mountains while visiting historic iron mines, cave shelters, century-old buildings, a Revolutionary War entrenchment. The scenery affords some of the best mountain top views and waterfalls found in the local forests. More than just a walk down the path, our hikes will take us over mountains, through valleys, and across streams. Hikers should be in reasonable condition for a moderate and steady pace of 3 to 5 hours. All registrations must include a current email address. Students will be emailed orientation materials prior to first hike. Consult your physician before attempting a physically challenging activity like hiking. DECORATIVE FOUR LEAF CLOVER FEE: $25Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (March 17)Kids will learn the basics of woodworking by sanding their own lucky four leaf clover for St. Patrick’s Day! Afterwards they will paint it to use as a decoration for the holiday.

Maryann Greco, an experienced magician with over 35 years of experience will work with the students to enhance their magic skills through practice, practice, practice! BLOOMING BLOSSOMS! FEE: $25Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (March 24) A flower can be made to appear quickly, or to grow slowly, it can also be vanished. How? MAGIC!!

LOLLIPOP MAGIC! FEE: $25Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (March 31) Lollipops is a sweet effect that really keeps ‘em guessing. Magician shows an unprepared brown paper bag. He reaches in and pulls out a red lollipop replacing this, he pulls out a lime lollipop this is replaced with 2 more lollipop flavors. When he hands the bag to his audience they all have vanished. How did that happen? MAGIC!!

MAGIC WITH CARDS! FEE: $25Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (April 14) The performer displays three cards in a fan, two spot cards with one picture card between them. The fan is turnedface down, and a spectator is asked to select the picture card. The other 2 cards are displayed and...you’ll find out with this unique magic trick that has various versions. Now That’s Magic!!!

MAGIC WITH CUPS AND BALLS! FEE: $25Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (April 21) A ball appears under a cup, push a ball through a solid cup’s bottom, balls jump from one cup to another, balls appear from nowhere. How’s it done? You already know the answer..Magic!!

In these fun and exciting classes, students will work on movement combinations that will challenge their minds and bodies and will explore a wide variety of skills including dance, gymnastics, balance beam, rhythmic play, creative ex-

pression, and the use of toys and props! Instructors will work with the students to enhance their strength, flexibility, coordination, muscle control, and self-expression through dance, gymnastics, music and

rhythm. This program is designed with the children in mind and places as much emphasis on bolstering confidence and self-esteem as it does on improving gross motor skills.

CIRCUS FUN! FEE: $25Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (March 24) In this class, we will practice our Circus performance skills as we try our hands at tumbles and tight rope (balance beam) walking, leap and jump over the circus’s most lovable (stuffed) animals, and even clown around with some scarf juggling!

A SAFARI ADVENTURE! FEE: $25 Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (March 31) Explore the African jungle while we move and groove to the jungle beat, emulate the movements of wild animals, and travel through rivers and over bridges (balance beam) along our journey!

AHOY MATEY! FEE: $25Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (April 14) Set sail as a pirate for a class that is sure to be a splash! Its treasure we’re after! We may encounter some obstacles as we chart our course, but we won’t give up! Will we find the treasure before the class is over? Either way, we’ll have fun trying as we move our bodies to pirate songs and enjoy the rhythm of the ocean.

DINO DANCE! FEE: $25Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (April 21) Get ready to rock and roll with the dinosaurs as we sing and dance to dino themed songs, practice mov-ing like different dinosaurs (two feet, four feet, simmers and flyers), and take care of dinosaurs at our own dino zoo! We’ll finish the class with a dinosaur marching parade!

Swirled deep colors are mixed into our slime to create a far out feeling and distant stars and glitter are mixed in as well. See where your imagination takes you with this slime!

TIE DYE SHELLS FEE: $25Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (May 5) We’ll begin with ordinary shells you could find walking along the beach and turn them into bright cre-ations like you’ve never seen! Tie Dye decor is found in many clothing pieces, but have you ever seen it done on a shell?

MERMAID TAIL FEE: $25Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (May 12)Create this beautiful piece of art with any color combination you wish! It all looks beautiful on our glitter-ing mermaid tail piece, not to mention the background that we’d be able to think up in any form!

DREAM CATCHER FEE: $25Tuesday, 3:05-4:05 (May 19) What can you catch as you dream in your sleep? These ancient tools are fun to create and hang at home! String in beads, feathers, anything you like to make them uniquely your own!
