Meet the Joslin’sA family STory

Say hello to Bill, Jodie, Masha, Bota and the newest member of the family,……Melody.

Bill and Jodie’s story of being Bill and Jodie’s story of being blessed by 3 children is a wonder-ful reflection on a couple with a heart for family. They had always known and believed they would have children yet they hadn’t really thought about adoption until one day in the car Jodie was listening day in the car Jodie was listening to the radio and a radio ad came on about adoption. “My heart jumped and I knew we should adopt.” That night without saying ANYTHING to her husband, Bill was on the computer and was looking at an adoption web site. “I looking at an adoption web site. “I honestly don’t even know how I ended up at that web site or remember going to it” states Bill. “He came into the room and said to me, I’ve found our children” says Jodie. “I was blown away. We hadn’t ever talked about adoption and here he was the same day my heart was touched with the idea sharing an adoption site with me!”sharing an adoption site with me!”

Page 13: Treasured Ones Fall 2010

In Russia, Masha still has family members. She has a brother and sister as well as a Grandmother. Her Mother and Father passed away and her Grandmother was unable to take care of all the children. Masha was just recently able to visit for the first time since she moved to the United States 6 years ago. “It was wonderful” says Masha who was accompanied by her Dad. “I remember where I grew up and was able to visit with my siblings and Grandmother. The house I lived in is abandoned and my blanket was right on the floor where I left it years earlier when I was taken to an orphanage. I am really close to my brother and he is going to come out for my an orphanage. I am really close to my brother and he is going to come out for my wedding next year. I am so excited!” Masha is engaged and planning a 2011 wedding.

In 2004, the Joslin’s were in the process of adopting a child from Kazakstan. They had received a phone call from another agency and social worker they were working with, that there was a picnic in Pleasanton where you could meet with children from Russia that had been brought here. “Honestly, we really didn’t want to go, but felt we should” says Jodie. “We were already in the process of an adoption and wondered what really is the point of attending? Yet we kept being tugged at that we should attend. On the way down, we kept saying to each other that we would just stay a short while and then leave”. Once there, Masha who was 12 at the time and Bill and Jodie just connected leave”. Once there, Masha who was 12 at the time and Bill and Jodie just connected beautifully. In a way that was unusually strong according to the adoption agency. “Bill and I felt such a strong connection with Masha and it was love at first sight. She was supposed to be adopted by another family and we felt bad as we had such a connection and actually didn’t want to interfere with that. We found out later that day, the other adoption for us had fallen through unexpectedly. We also found out that Masha being adopted by the other family fell through as well and we knew this was meant to be. Masha came to live with us as a shy 12 year old.” She is far from shy these days and we Masha came to live with us as a shy 12 year old.” She is far from shy these days and we (McKay’s) have been able to be part of her growing up as we have photographed her through the years.

Page 14: Treasured Ones Fall 2010

In 2006, Bill and Jodie were in the process of another adoption of a child from Guatemala. Unexpectedly, that adoption also fell through. Just two days later, the Joslin’s heard about a young girl named Bota (Beautiful) who was 6 years of age from Kazakstan. Bota was origi-nally abandoned as a baby on a park bench in the middle of winter at about 14 days old. She was adopted at 6 months, but her mother passed away when Bota was just a small child. After a few years in an orphanage, a family in the Bay Area adopted her only to give her back up after just 9 months with no reasons given. Once again Bill and Jodie were in the process of adopting already, and once again, the Lord had a different plan for who they would care for as adopting already, and once again, the Lord had a different plan for who they would care for as a child. Bota came to live with them and found a home with two wonderful parents and a new sister in Masha. “As she was becoming part of the family, she realized she was not in any of the McKay Portraits that had been done. We knew we had to get in and so at Christmas time of 2008, we had new family portraits created” says Jodie. Ally McKay shared her experience while photographing the portraits with Bota. “When Bota was being photographed, we were told that the Joslin’s do not know her exact birth date and so December 25th has been given to her as they knew it was close. During the session, Bota looked at me and said “This is the to her as they knew it was close. During the session, Bota looked at me and said “This is the best birthday gift I have ever had”! The Joslin’s shared with me how because she was now going to be in the family portraits, that Bota was truly realizing, she had a home to stay and a family to love and be loved by. Bota loves to bring home strays says her Dad. She always wants to make sure everyone and everything is taken care of. “I love to take care of animals and insects that don’t have homes” says Bota.

Page 15: Treasured Ones Fall 2010

When Jodie and Bill came to pick up their daughter Masha’s Senior High School portraits this past fall from the McKay’s, she brought some more news with her. “Well, you will be seeing more of us again, I’m pregnant! “Exclaimed Jodie enthusiastically. I’m expecting in July” After 15 years of marriage and two amazing teenage daughters, the Joslin’s were going to have a baby. “It is so wonderful, we always believed we would have a baby as wonderful, we always believed we would have a baby as well and we both felt that it would happen in God’s timing. After 15 years we are. The Lord just had a plan for us to have two other beautiful daughters given to us first.” On July 3rd, 2010 Melody was born. She is beautiful baby girl and baby sister to Masha and Bota. “Earlier this year I kept telling my mom I think she is preg-nant. She had this glow about her” laughed Masha. I just knew and I was right!

The Joslin’s are an amazing family and inspiration to all those they meet. They love unconditionally and are blessed by how the Lord has given them children in His way and in His time. When asked if there was any more to come, they just laughed and said sure, whatever God has planned for us!
