Introduction

We believe that by setting clear standards, students and their parents know and understand what is expected of them at Kalamunda Senior High School.

This policy outlines the school standards for:

• Academic Performance

• Attendance

• Conduct

• Uniform.

The degree to which each student achieves the school standards in academic performance, attendance and conduct will determine their Good Standing during the year.

Kalamunda Senior High School Standards

Students must ensure that they meet all of the standards below to maintain Good Standing throughout the year:

Academic Performance

Students must achieve the very best they can. To do this they must demonstrate the following attitudinal descriptors (* ABE) consistently or often:

• “Works to the best of their ability”.

• “Is well organised and prepared for learning”:comes to class equipped to participate in the lesson e.g. pens, pencils, paper, files,

books, sports clothing, notebook.

• “Actively participates in learning”:attempts class work and home work.

• Meet deadlines: submits all work by the due date.

Attendance

There is a strong correlation between the academic performance of students and their attendance and participation in the academic program. Absences from school will impact on a student’s ability to understand the material covered and to successfully complete the assessment program.

In order for the attendance standard to be achieved students must attend school for a minimum 90% each semester.

• Extended absences due to illness verified by a doctor’s certificate will be taken into consideration.

• Special school days including sports carnivals and Kalamunda Day are compulsory attendance days.

Page 3: Middle School Good Standing Policy - Kalamunda Senior · PDF fileMiddle School Good Standing Policy. ... due to illness verified by a doctor’s certificate will be taken ... the privileges

• Failure to attend these days will affect a student’s good standing.

• Holidays should not be taken outside the official school holiday weeks.

* ABE - as indicated on the Attitude Behaviour Effort section of the school semester reports

Conduct

All students at Kalamunda Senior High School are expected to maintain high standards of conduct. Good conduct ensures that students give themselves the best opportunity to focus on achieving their academic potential. Further, good conduct ensures that students develop strong positive working relationships with their peers and teachers, and helps them build positive life skills.

The following are regarded as appropriate conduct:

• respecting school expectations and values (Love of Learning, Respect, Resilience, Pride and Community)

• respecting the rights of others

• appropriate organisation and preparation

• appropriate use of class time.

Repeated breaches of what is regarded as appropriate conduct will jeopardise a student’s ability to meet the conduct standard.

Suspension results in automatic loss of good standing for ten weeks.

Uniform

In 2001 the Kalamunda Senior High School Council endorsed the introduction of a full school uniform rather than a dress code. This continues to be endorsed by the School Board under the school’s Independent Public School status. We expect our students to be proud of their appearance, and wearing the uniform is both a condition of enrolment and necessary to maintain Good Standing.

The following are aspects of appropriate uniform:

• Wearing full school uniform at all times

• Physical Education clothes and dance clothes are not to be worn at any other time including before school

• Students are to have two or less breaches of the School Uniform Policy at every five week review.
