destinations in the world, there is plenty to shout about in the Middle East in 2013. Here Breaking Travel News

brings you all the latest developments.

THIS PAGE: Burj al Arab - an icon of Dubai

Optimism has finally returned to the tourism market here in the Middle East, with Dubai leading the way. In recent years the emirate has seen a boom in the offering of affordable yet quality accommodation, however demand for high-end luxury hotels remains strong with occupancy levels in the five star market at near capacity.

To meet this demand Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah is set to open in 2014, bringing to the emirate its legendary service and signature details for the first time. The 330-room

Arabian-themed hotel will boast a 600 metre private beach, spa and a range of outdoor pools. The Palazzo Versace Dubai, only the second Versace-branded property in the world, is also scheduled to open in 2014, offering a ‘personal lifestyle experience’ enhanced with luxury and technology. Boasting light-filled bedrooms and suites, bespoke furnishings and lavish colourful silks, the Palazzo Versace is dressed throughout in Versace style. Finally, set to open on The Palm Jumeirah in 2016, W Dubai – The Palm will provide a contemporary lifestyle experience with a complete

service offer including the brand’s signature W Lounge. The hotel will offer eight contemporary dining and lounge concepts, more than 2,500 square metres of ultra-modern meeting and event space and a full-service WIRED business centre.

IN ThE SkIES… In Qatar, Hamad International Airport began its soft opening phase earlier this month. Positioned at the edge of the Arabian Gulf, the tranquil waterside setting provides a perfect backdrop for



the destination’s stylish architectural elements, underpinned by advanced airport systems. It features two runways, both of which are among the longest in the world, a state-of-the-art air traffic control tower, a stunning passenger terminal with a design capacity of 28 million passengers per year, over 25,000 square metres of retail facilities and a uniquely shaped public mosque.

The ten launch airlines - including Biman Bangladesh Airlines, flydubai, Air Arabia, Iran Air and RAK Airways - are presently operating from the airport, with flag-carrier Qatar Airways expected to be in place by the end of the year.

Still with aviation, Eithad Airways - considered the World’s Leading Airline by the World Travel Awards – has heralded a successful first year for its equity alliance strategy, after a financial reporting season which saw each of the five airlines within the alliance – airberlin, Air Seychelles, Virgin Australia, Aer Lingus and Etihad itself – announce a profitable performance. The airlines’ individual and collective results were boosted by a number of measures, including growing codeshare traffic between their networks, successful joint

sales and marketing efforts, and a range of increasing business and cost synergies.

James Hogan, Etihad Airways’ president, welcomed the success of the airlines. He said: “Last year was a year in which the global economy remained very tough and in which airline industry profits as a whole shrank, for the second successive year. Yet each of the airlines in our equity alliance showed strong financial performance with each reporting a profit.”

SAuDI ARABIA Saudi Arabia is also redoubling its efforts to develop its tourism industry. Already the largest hospitality market in the GCC, Saudi Arabia accounts for the bulk of international tourist arrivals, at 46 per cent according to an October 2012 GCC Hospitality Industry Report from Alpen Capital, representing a 50 per cent year-on-year increase against 2011 figures.

“The Kingdom is investing heavily in it’s infrastructure as expansion plans for the new US$7 billion Jeddah airport project move ahead, with the airport projecting annual passenger volume of up to 80

million passengers within the next two decades,” said Mark Walsh, portfolio director, Reed Travel Exhibitions.

The Red Sea port of Jeddah is the gateway to Makkah and Medina, a favoured destination for domestic tourism in the summer, as well as a commercial trading hub for the west coast of Saudi Arabia. In addition the capital Riyadh is also experiencing increased demand from business travellers. Saudi government investment into key infrastructure projects including airport expansion, railways and roads, is pegged at around US$80 billion between now and 2022, with investment into major tourism initiatives forecast to grow at a CAGR of 6.9 per cent.

Hotel room supply in the Kingdom is expected to increase at a CAGR of 1.5 per cent between 2011 and 2016, increasing from 243,117 rooms in 2011 to 262,049 in 2016, with 69 properties currently in the planning or construction phase.
