WelcomeThank you for joining the National Retail Association (NRA) to celebrate the 2015 Young Retailer of the Year Award; a national honour considered to be one of the highest of accolades in the retail sector.

The Young Retailer of the Year Award has been around for close to half a century because retailers acknowledge that the youth of today are our leaders of tomorrow. Employers want to recognise and reward their go-getting employees and the NRA wants to showcase this passion to the industry.

This year’s nominees have certainly demonstrated the diverse opportunities available in retail, and the exciting career paths ahead for these savvy young retailers.

We are extremely proud of all our young retailers, as well as the collective achievements of the broader retail sector. Together, we are strengthening the industry for a brighter and more prosperous future.

I would also like to acknowledge and personally thank all of our Strategic Partners and Event Sponsors; without your continued support proceedings such as this evening would not be possible. Thank you must also go to our judges and speakers for their invaluable participation in this year’s competition and Future of Retail Forum.

I would like to wish our 25 Young Retailer Finalists all the best, and hope you enjoy this year’s Parisian Soiree Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony.

Trevor Evanschief executive officer – nra

Having returned home earlier this year from the Westfield World Retail Study Tour, 2014 NRA Young Retailer of the Year, Joanna Zurzolo, was able to experience first-hand some of the most successful, innovative, and cutting edge retail businesses, and build a network to last a lifetime.

“Winning the Award is what a young retailer’s dreams are made of. It has been exciting, challenging and a real journey of self-growth that has helped to lay the foundation for my rewarding career. As the 2014 Young Retailer of the Year, my name and story was part of the retail world, and it gave me the exposure to accelerate my career. Participating in this Award is a must for those aspiring and driven young retailers seeking their next rewarding challenge.”

Address from the 2014 Young Retailer of the Year

Starlight’s programs brighten the lives of seriously ill kids and their families, replacing pain, fear and boredom, with fun, joy and laughter.

It takes a donation of only $39 to support a family who is going through a really tough time with Starlight’s in-hospital programs for one year.

Today, the NRA in collaboration with REST Industry Super have been serving barista coffees and Adriano Zumbo pastries for a small gold coin donation.

Whilst the barista has gone home for the night, if you do wish to contribute to this cause, you will find an envelope in the middle of your table.

Keynote SpeakerJoining Steinhoff Asia Pacific (formerly Freedom Group Limited) in 2002 as General Counsel, Tim was responsible for the group’s legal and compliance functions, and was involved in the privatisation of Freedom Group in 2003. In 2008 Tim became responsible for certain operational areas of the business, including Freedom Home, Bayswiss and Bay Leather Republic. In November 2010, Tim was appointed to his current role as Managing Director of Freedom.

Tim is an advocate for recognising and rewarding young retail talent. It is a core philosophy of Steinhoff Asia Pacific Limited, that young talent is not only recognised and rewarded, but that they become active parts of senior management throughout the business. It sounds cliché, but if you don’t embrace young talent, your business has no future. Retailers must be a mirror to society and importantly their customer; why would a young staff member be any less important than a young customer?

So what’s Tim’s insight for the aspiring young leaders here tonight? A leader’s job is actually done when they are not present; that is how you truly know whether you have influenced people, and harness the power of simple recognition over financial reward (starting with remembering people’s names!).

Judging ProcessThis year, the Young Retailer of the Year competition attracted nominations from across the country, in various sized businesses and roles.

Each entrant submitted an overview of their retail experience, outlining their achievements and ambitions for the future, accompanied by a written submission outlining their future business improvement plan, to demonstrate their skills and knowledge.

Each submission was assessed by NRA’s Training Institute and was refined to 25 Finalists. With the support of Sinclair Recruitment, these Finalists underwent a telephone interview to discuss their retail experience and submission in more detail.

Today, Finalists attended individual panel interviews to discuss their business improvement plan and answer a number of detailed questions.

Tonight, ten successful young retailers will be acknowledged as the Top 10 Short Listed Finalists, and for their final consideration they will be asked to participate in a Q&A on stage.

Congratulations and best of luck to all our Finalists.
