An Unnamed Poem: Build a longer table, not a higher wall, Feeding those who hunger, making room for all. Feasting together, stranger turns to friend, Christ breaks walls to pieces, false divisions end. Build a safer refuge, not a larger jail, Where the weak find shelter, mercy will not fail. For any place where justice is denied, Christ will break the jail walls, freeing all inside. Build a broader doorway, not a longer fence; Love protects all people, sparing no expense. When we embrace compassion more than fear Christ tears down our fences, all are welcome here. When we lived as exiles, refugees abroad, Christ became our doorway to the reign of God; So must our tables welcome those who roam None can be excluded; all must find a home. TALLEY’S TOPICS I am not sure where LLCM [see below] got the song for the Special Music on Sunday but it was very well done, quite meaningful and the message of the song was right on. It

was one of those times in the service that I would have released my balloon. For those not in attendance in worship last Sunday, I told a story about a large parish church pastor who gave out balloons one Sunday and asked the congregation to release their balloons when they felt something in the service really moved them spiritually. To make a long story short, many in the story still had their balloons at the end of the service. I was pleased when several of our people came up to me following worship and said or opened their hands indicating that they would have released their balloons a couple times during the service Sunday. They indicated that they might have needed three or four balloons; one for Cindy’s offertory music, one for the special music, one for the sermon (the content, not for it being over) one for Randy’s meditation at communion, one for just being in worship on Sunday. As I said in my sermon I think that there is a very positive vibe or a good feeling about the direction that we are going and who we are as a congregation. I feel that we have a very positive attitude and that we really care about one another and this ministry. We want to do what we are called to be and to do. The words of the special music song, really hit home and was an expression of our mission and witness. Read the words, let them sink in, pray for our church and our ministry, be open to the Spirit of God and release your balloons with us in this ministry.

See you Sunday…. Dick

(LLCM: A vocal quartet made up of choir members Lannette S, Linda B, Caroline B, and Michael M, sang the poem printed on the previous page.)

Below: The coffee-fellowship time following worship The Fellowship/Outreach Committee is looking into being more organized in providing snacks, clean-up, etc.

Moderator’s Minute First I want to thank all of you for your prayers and for the assistance I received from my elder, Nancy Osborn. I have been sick way too long and it is good to be feeling stronger each day. I am focusing on being able to go to my 60th class reunion in October. I have been reading a book called “The Continual Feast” by Jan Karon. I found a small writing by C.S. Lewis that touched my heart and would like to share it. “As Christians we can’t love the whole world. But we should remember that God has placed us in a specific community at a particular time. We’re called to love those around us. Loving them means serving them and in doing so we become the best citizens.” And: “Also remember great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance.” Samuel Johnson

“Ambition is the path to Success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in. (Found on Jolynn’s Facebook page. CG)

The Mission Statement of United Christian Church, Renton, was read by Pat to open the July Council Meeting:

“Micah tells us, ‘To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God.’ We are committed to be loving and welcoming to all. Living our faith, we will take risks as we dynamically enhance lives, transform our communities and stand up against injustice wherever we encounter it. To accomplish this, we

will be: a forum for education open to questions and discussion respectful of the diversity of each individual’s faith walk meet all individuals where they are. Through all this we will grow together in our relationship with each other and with God.”

News Around the ChurchThe Sunday Bulletins are now being put together by

a whole team of members, with Randy C., leader. News, announcements, prayer concerns, inspirational thoughts, corrections, etc., should be sent to him. Leona H. receives a printed copy from Leigh L., then she runs off copies and folds them. Thank you to all of the team. Nineteen people showed up for the Monday Munchers lunch on July 9th, after a last day change of location. They celebrated three birthdays and two 66th anniversaries. The group is open to all who enjoy eating lunch at different locations with friendly folks. More on pg. 5 Continue to hold the Search Committee in Prayers. The Committee will be interviewing a second top candidate in July after the first one ultimately declined our offer. Members of the Fellowship/Outreach Committee at their June meeting are: Joyce Bruner, Sue Hunt, Caroline Bacon, Dee Woods, Janet Medcalf, as well as Moderator, Pat Auten and Pastor Dick. Many in the congregation hold more than one job and we appreciate all their efforts. One we note this month is Mary Kimsey, who brings flowers each Sunday. On July 1, Lake City Christian Church and University Christian Church became one church called, “Journey Christian.” Pastor Dick had been treasurer and his wife, Jimmie, moderator, at Lake City. They are both happy to be out of those jobs! [I’m sure they are looking forward to Pastor Dick being out of his job with us, too! ~CG]

Among the Congregation Our sympathy and prayers go to Tom Riemer at the death of his brother recently. Also, his son’s weekend caregiver has moved away, so Tom is unable to attend church. Annie B. has overcome brain cancer, a brain bleed after surgery, chemo and radiation, and returned to work at Renton Technical College last week after being away for more than nine months. She is not yet ready to resume her old job which required the college to divide her job among at least two people while she was sick. Her new job will enable her to relearn some skills she lost. She is a real miracle! [We wonder what God has in mind for her now! CG] On June 28 Leigh and Nancy Lacey attended Leigh’s 69th reunion of his Yakima High School’s class of 1949, staying overnight in order to visit more friends and relatives. They will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this next week. (noted above) “Jay” Sargent now has her driver’s license. Hurray! Lannette’s brother donated 21 boxes of cereal for a challenge for Relay for Life! That is Great! Janet Medcalf, who lives near the church, has volunteered to serve on the Fellowship/Outreach Committee. Welcome, Janet. Randy Chapman reported he had his first violin lesson in 40 years. [We would never have known! ~CG] His teacher is the former Concertmaster of the Rainier Symphony. Cari McLaughlin has a new job that comes with a salary increase. Cameron commented that now they wouldn’t have to choose which bill wouldn’t get paid each week. Former pianist, Rachel LaFond, played concerts in Kirkland and Gig Harbor as the Weathervane was being written, and a family wedding kept her from visiting our worship service. Perhaps next time we can mesh newsletter schedules so she can get more publicity.

Ongoing Outreach Communities and Schools of Renton will be collecting supplies for their Back Pack Drive. Notice the new title. The School District is buying school

supplies in bulk to make it easier for the parents and not as expensive. Students on free and reduced lunch can get the basic school supplies for $10.00 and the other students will pay $30.00.

We have been asked to collect composition notebooks, both narrow lined and wide line, alarm clocks, for our homeless students and those that have no one at home with them in the mornings, mechanical pencils with lead refills, 3 ring pencil pouches, and pencil boxes. These are extras that will be added to the backpacks. I will put shopping lists on the window sill in the narthex and a shopping list on the tub where you can leave them.

Communities and Schools of Renton is no longer in the old City Hall Building, if you want to visit them. They have moved to offices in Liberty Park where Birthday Dreams was located. They are sharing the building with the Renton Community Foundation. There is parking out in front that backs against the tennis courts. Also a good guideline is that it is just past the Library. Give them a call (425-430-6658) and let them know you are coming. The door is kept locked but there is a door bell you can ring.

We will continue to collect cereal and I will be checking to see if the Center of Hope has need of it also. Thank you for your generosity. It is appreciated by those eating the cereal.

We are also reminded that the Renton Kiwanis Clothes Bank is now located at 444 Park Ave North, a Renton School property that was made available since the Clothing Bank helps clothe many Renton School students.

REACH Happenings! Executive Director Rev. Bianca Davis-Lovelace (at right) will begin a listening tour beginning in late July for the coalition of REACH churches to develop ways to better serve the needs of our clients and community. Rev. Bianca wants to develop a deeper connection between our churches, our wider community, REACH, and the clients we serve. For more information contact Rev. Bianca Davis-Lovelace at [email protected].

Interview with New Member, Joanne Roberts Joanne officially joined our church on April 22, but there wasn’t an opportunity for your editor to visit with her earlier. Joanne is a world traveler, recently back from a business trip to Scotland in June. She grew up in the Disciples of Christ Church in Nashville. Her family later moved to Ferguson, Missouri, then Western Nebraska. She continued their traveling habits living in Florida, Minnesota, North Carolina, London, Tanzania, Baltimore, Bellingham and Everett, where she felt at home attending a United Church of Christ Church. When she moved to Renton she looked us up and joined us. Joanne is a single mother with two daughters in their twenties, one living in Seattle and one in Portland. Joanne is a former journalist, then became a doctor specializing in hospice and palliative medicine. She is now a physician executive for Providence St. Joseph Health, which requires more traveling. (She loves being 8 minutes from her office and 10 minutes from Sea Tac Airport.) She enjoys writing, reading and bike riding (though hasn’t been able to do much yet). [Your editor’s ears perked up at the mention of being a journalist and loves writing!] Welcome, Joanne!

Michael Moser’s climbing roses in June

Report From the July 1 Administrative Committee Meeting This committee has had only one previous meeting. Their responsibilities will include the duties of the Finance and Stewardship Committees as found in the 2011 Bylaws. Chair of the committee will be Vice-Moderator, Randy Chapman, and include Treasurer, Linda Becker, Financial Secretary, Peter Dunn, Pastor Relations Chair, Nancy Osborn, or alternate, Property Chair, Cameron McLaughlin or alternate, and one additional member of the congregation, currently, Claudia Gillispie. Meetings are open to members of the congregation. A finance report from Treasurer Linda B. as of the end of June (1/2 of the year) showed expenditures of $2,473 below budget, but the budget included savings from last year. To simplify: we spent $9, 272 over what we brought in. The Administrative Committee will continue to monitor income and expenditures, but the congregation should also be aware of our situation. Designated funds donated for specific uses were also discussed. Among the funds is one fund with $387 for “Monday Munchers.” (See “Invitation below.”)

Invitation to Collect Aluminum Cans Monday Munchers is a fellowship group open to members and friends, and also strangers interested in being our friends. The group eats at restaurants who meet their criteria: average prices, able to order off the menu, and pay individually. Many of the group are seniors or have lower incomes, so can only join the group with some financial aid. Thus, the designated fund for the Munchers lunches was begun by collecting and recycling aluminum. Notify Kimseys, or Gillispies, if you have cans to recycle. For receiving lunch aid, talk to Donna K. or Claudia G.

Wedding of Gillispie Grandson

In June the youngest grandchild of Ed and Claudia Gillispie, Ben Nilsen and Serena, above, were married in an outdoor ceremony in Issaquah on a misty cool morning. The Gillispies recalled they were each younger than this couple on their wedding day (a very hot day). Ed and Claudia celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary this week.

Nice looking buck

It seems someone took a picture of Michael M. taking a picture of a deer strolling across the back yard of the church. It was taken from the window behind the organ where Michael often practices.
