STUDENT EQUITY

The Sequoias Community College District’s Board of Trustees is committed to providing an educational environment that will enable our diverse student population to achieve their transfer and/or occupational objectives.

College of the Sequoias (COS) The District shall draft, approve and carry out the goals and objectives as defined by the Student Equity Plan in all aspects of the District's operation including, but not limited to, advertisement, recruitment, matriculation, retention, persistence, transfer and graduation.

COS The District shall involve active internal and external constituency groups and individuals who are committed to addressing and articulating the perspectives and concerns of historically underrepresented groups. In addition, these same constituency groups will also be responsible for identifying and addressing institutional barriers to equity.

The Student Equity Plan will focus on the goals for access, retention, degree and certificate completion, English as a Second Language (ESL) and basic skills completion, and transfer for each historically underrepresented group identified in the District’s Student Equity Plan. The District will coordinate and execute activities most likely to be effective to attain the goals, including coordination of existing student equity related programs. Activities outlined in the Student Equity Plan will be funded through the State Chancellor’s Office Student Equity program.

The production and review of campus-based research is critical to the success of the Student Equity Plan. A schedule and process will be created to review the research and to evaluate the progress made toward the goals.

COS The District will draft an executive summary that describes the groups for whom goals have been set, the goals, the initiatives that the District will undertake to achieve the goals and the resources budgeted for that purpose. The Student Equity Plan shall be developed, maintained and updated annually by the Student Equity Plan W o r k G r o u p under the supervision of the Vice President of Student Services or his/her designee. A status report will be prepared each summer by the Student Equity Plan Work Group and submitted to the Equity Committee at the first meeting each fall.
