Nowadays,opticalfibrecablesarealmostalwaysinstalledinexistingconduitsystems.Thustheexistingconduitsystemisoverfilledandontheotherhandanewconduitsystemconstructioniscostly,thosetwofactorsconstituteaproblem.Opticalfibremicroconduitsystemandmicrocablenetworkssolvetheprobleminacomprehensiveway.Microconduitsystemconsistsofopticalfibresinglemicroductsandmultiductsandtheiraccessories.Thestandarddiametersofmicroductsvaryfrom5to18millimetres.Theycomeassinglemicroductormultiduct,i.e.bundleofmicroductsinanouterjacket.

Singlemicroductsareinstalledinbundlesbyblowing,inopticalfibreductswitha32,40or50mmdiameter.

Directburiedandindoormicrodutsareinstalleddirectlyinthegroundorinsidethebuildings.Multiductsareinstalledinconduitsystemordirectlyintheground.

Boththemicroductsandmultiductsareavailableinaversionpreventingflamespreading,forindoorsystems.Opticalfibremicrocablesinstalledinthemicroconduitsystemsbyblowingaretreatedinanextremelygentleway,sotheycanbethin,lightandcheap.

Advantages for the systems, networks and lines investor:• easy gradual development of cable networks, which are themain part of the cost due to easy blowing-in and blowing-outtheopticalfibremicrocables,• lowermaterialandinstallationcost(microducts,multiducts,microcablesandtheiraccessories)andthereforelower totalcostof1kmcableconduit,• muchlongerinstallationsections(betweenjoints),fewerjoints,cablemanholesandstoragebins,• lowercostofspaceoccupiedbythemicroconduitlines, e.g.a7x10multiductcanholdcableswiththesamenumberofopticfibresas7pipeswitha40mmdiameter,and takesup7timeslessspace;itisparticularlynoticeableatpassagesunderobstaclesintheground,• possibility tocreateaccessnetworkswithoutopticfibre joints,on longandwindingroutesfromtheaccesscentres totheuser’sbuildingorevenaflat,• easyreplacementofoldopticalfibretypestonewones.

Advantages for the line and network installer:• much smaller volume and weight of the materials (microduts, multiduts and microcables) and equipment (blowing-inmachines,compressors),• andhenceeasierandcheaper:• storage,loading,transportandunloadingofthematerialsandequipment,• executionoftheworksduetotheeasierhandlingofmaterialsandequipmentatthebuildingsite.

Advantages for the network operator:• easyblowing-inoftheopticalfibremicrocables,accordingtotheuser’sorderaswellasblowingthemicrocablesout toreplacethemwithnewones,removethelineorremoveafault,• lower, comparing to traditional system cost of maintaining a reserve capacity of the microconduit system with thepossibilityofrentingitouttootherusers,• easytobranchoutthelines.
