The application is progressing smoothly and we look forward to the Council giving their vote of approval at an upcoming meeting in the near future. Rest assured, we will keep you well informed on the progress of the application. Last week, I was privileged to witness one of our senior Debating teams in action in a quarter-final against Prince Alfred College. The topic was “Dr Philip Nitschke should have his Medical Licence Reinstated” - our team spoke for the negative. It was an excellent night’s entertainment and although Mahendra Chitrarasu, Hamish Tynan and Philip Argenio were unsuccessful (much to my surprise) their presentation was excellent. Rostrevor had another senior team in action that night and we congratulate Michael Bruno, Jesse Hall and Ross Pezos (along with team member, Chris Saji, who unfortunately, could not attend on the night), who did the College and their families proud. We were also well represented by our Year 9 team the previous evening and we congratulate Alexander Carter, Owen Selby and Xavier Montin on their performance. Our Year 8 team made it through to compete this Tuesday against Pedare Christian College. Their topic is “The Serving of Alcoholic Beverages on Airlines should Stop”. We are arguing the affirmative. We wish Patrick Moller, Luke Valente and Cyril Saji all the best. Special thanks to Mr Tom Hodkinson for his dedicated efforts coaching the boys and Ms Kerry Alves and Ms Dina Hasaneen for their support of the teams. Last Friday evening, several staff and senior students were privileged to attend the Ordination of Father Michael Romeo. Father Michael is an old collegian of Rostrevor and also taught here a few years ago, prior to joining the priesthood. It was a wonderful Liturgy. On Wednesday, we were also privileged to have Father Michael say Mass for us. Several other old collegians, who have also joined the Priesthood, joined with Father Michael to speak to our House Gatherings and to con-celebrate Mass. We sincerely thank them all for their time and I know I speak on behalf of our community when I say what a wonderful day it was. Dear College Community

On behalf of the College community can I sincerely thank all parents who supported the College’s application to the Hills Council for the Early Learning Centre. The application is progressing smoothly and we look forward to the Council giving their vote of approval at an upcoming meeting in the near future. Rest assured, we will keep you well informed on the progress of the application.

All welcome.

Last Friday evening was also the annual CEO Indigenous Dinner. 60 Rostrevor guests, made up of Indigenous students, parents, families and staff members, attended the dinner with over 600 other guests! Congratulations to the following students who presented a cultural dance at the dinner: Cameron Croker, Jamiro Hume, Syd Malbunka, Troy Mardigan, Adam Nichaloff, Anthony O’Brien, Alvaro Sabino, Ty Scrutton-Turner and Maitland Thompson.

This Friday, during our extended pastoral care time, students from Reception to Year 12 will join together to continue our support for the plight of refugees in Australia. They will work side by side to cut out and decorate a copy of their own hands in order to raise them in solidarity during a “Hands up for Refugees” ceremony on the front lawn. The 2014 Prefect group have been the key drivers of this activity and it once again will highlight the wonderful community-building days we are fortunate to have at Rostrevor. It is one of the many activities that demonstrate how we remain faithful to the charism of Edmund Rice.

SACE Course Approval

A Promotion Panel consisting of Heads of Faculties and Heads of Houses will meet early Term 4. It is the responsibility of this group to check and approve every Year 11 and Year 12 course entered for 2015. If either a course or individual subjects are not approved, the Panel will make recommendations based on the student’s achievement and career aspirations. If students fall below a certain Grade Point Average (GPA), which normally means that they have not met the requirements for a number of subjects, families will be contacted to discuss alternative courses or pathways. If students meet the GPA requirement but do not meet the minimum requirements for a subject or two, a member of the Promotion Panel will discuss recommendations with them. At this point, a Promotion Recommendation Form will go home for parents to sign.

Students whose courses are approved will also receive notification via the Promotion Recommendation Form.

Students entering Years 8 – 10 in 2015 will also receive course confirmation once it has been finalised.

Stress & Anxiety

As we approach the end of Term 3 many Year 12 students will be feeling the pressure of finalisng major assessment tasks for moderation. If your son is in Year 12 and not experiencing any stress at the moment, take this as a warning signal.

There will be times in all students’ schooling where they experience stress and anxiety, no matter the year level. It is essential for us as parents to be tuned in to our children to recognise early warning signals so that we can provide the required support.

To nurture self-managing and self-correcting habits in students it is important to raise their self-awareness of their personal warning signs for the onset of stress. Discussions need to occur both at home and at school to ensure all students are empowered to act when they recognise stress warning signs.

Student Reports

Over the following few weeks teachers will be finalising assessments to determine student achievement for the term. Teachers will work with others including their Head of Faculty to confirm assessment standards through moderation activities and prepare student reports. Term (or Mid-Semester) Reports for our Reception boys will include subject descriptors, subject performance on an achievement scale as well as an effort grade. Our Years 1-6 reports will show subject descriptors as well as an achievement and effort grade. Years 7 – 9 will show student progress by the use of Subject Performance Indicators and Years 10, 11 and 12 students receive a comment report.

Please note that reports will be issued to your son on the last day of term (Friday 26 September). Reports will be distributed to all students at a Special Pastoral Care lesson which will be held on Friday Lesson 7 (from 2.30 – 3.15pm).

Year 12 students who normally have Lesson 7 as a free lesson on Friday afternoons will be expected to attend the Special Pastoral Care lesson, to participate in any pastoral activities and to receive their Term 3 reports.

Reports that are not collected on Friday 26 September will be available for collection from our Teaching & Learning Assistant, Julie Pratten at the start of Term 4.

Written reports are an essential part of reporting but they do not provide a full picture of a student’s progress at school. Parents are encouraged to contact subject teachers if they have concerns from the home front. Ideally, through regular contact with the school, parents should know enough about their son’s progress for there to be nothing in a written report that comes as a total surprise. Parents are also encouraged to use the Parent Portal to check their son’s current or future subject workloads.

TEACHING AND LEARNING

These tense feelings may originate from a number of situations such as:

•Heavy study and learning workload;

•Overly high expectations of themselves or expectations of others;

•Striving to be too perfect and obsessed with detail;

•Lack of organisation and not coping;

•Peer group problems and pressure.

It is perfectly natural for these to occur as they are a part of adolescence. The key is how to control these feelings before they have too much of an adverse effect on students’ self-esteem, health and wellbeing.

A proactive approach is for students to identify and list their main sources of stress/anxiety and their individual warning signals. When they first start to see these signals they should be encouraged to seek support. From a College perspective, students are encouraged to speak with their subject teachers and Pastoral Care teacher or make an appointment to see our Counsellor, John Pertl, or Psychologist, Rebecca Rossi.

We can help our children to deal with stress and anxiety by promoting independence from an early age. This is not always easy because our natural instinct as parents is to care for and nurture them. Nevertheless, we should not wait until our children are ready to leave home before we give them responsibility. Training for independence needs to start from a young age and continue into the teenage years. Encouraging independence in children is not just good training for adulthood; it is one of the best ways to promote self-confidence. When we teach children to do jobs for themselves we demonstrate our faith in them and send a powerful message that they are capable. Our actions definitely speak louder than words.

National ICAS Results

Each year a number of our boys who seek extension in their work are involved in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) testing. These tests are independent skills-based assessments with a competition element and a number of our boys have performed extremely well in 2014.

I would like to publicly acknowledge their efforts;

YEAR 4 CONFIRMATION RETREAT

The Catholic Church looks to its young people with confidence as future leaders and disciples. It is through this mission that two classes of our year 10 Youth Ministry students were able to build bonds of faith and friendship at St Joseph’s Hectorville Primary School and in our junior campus to Year 4 students as part of the ‘Catholic Schools Youth Ministry Australia’ (CSYMA) program.

The Year 10 Youth Ministry students were asked to rise to the challenge of leading a Confirmation Retreat, which uncovered the theme of celebrating the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Each year 10 student had an important role to play in presenting the message of the Confirmation Retreat. The Year 4 students were very excited and engaged whilst learning about

these wonderful gifts that are given to them by the Holy Spirit. The main message was simple - to use the gifts that the Holy Spirit has given them through the Sacrament of Confirmation for the benefit of others. It was clearly emphasised that if these gifts are not used in this way, they begin to ‘settle’ and remain ‘dormant’ in the background of their lives.

Through exercising discipleship, leadership and faith formation, the Year 10 MC’s held the organisation of the day together like glue and they were praised for their work in leading the day successfully. The small group leaders showed a friendly nature toward the students in their care, as well as the students who were part of performing dramas and charades.

To conclude each day, a powerful session that evoked the senses was led to provide the opportunity for all staff and students to respond to Jesus’ invitation of love and relationship by placing a candle on the cross and saying a prayer.

As each flame and prayer came together, the room became brighter as it shone the way to truly uncovering the fruits of all the efforts involved in running a successful retreat.

Rostrevor College prides itself in implementing the CSYMA program into Religious Education, as the premise of it all is to uncover that the most important youth ministers in a school context are actually the students. It is through activities like this retreat where Youth Ministry shines and all involved have an opportunity to experience God in new and refreshing ways.

CO-CURRICULAR NEWS

Debating

Year 8 debaters Patrick Moller, Luke Valente and Cyril Saji have progressed to the grandfinal following their victory against Pedare on Tuesday night this week. This has capped off a remarkable year for the boys and we wish them the best of luck in the final which will take place at Parliament House next Tuesday.

The Year 9 team were narrowly defeated by Pembroke last week and the team of Alex Carter, Owen Selby and Xavier Montin performed admirably with Alex Carter awarded as best speaker in the 88.5 to 87.6 points loss.

Both of the Rostrevor senior teams represented themselves and the College admirably but were unable to progress any further than the quarterfinals.

Well done to all boys who participated this year and to the teachers for their guidance, most notably Mr Hodkinson who has worked hard to revive debating at Rostrevor and provide an opportunity for Rostrevor boys to develop their skills in public speaking and thinking.

In other Co-curricular News:

•Year 11 student Darcy Pisani was recently awarded the prestigious Dr Henry Kneebone Award for Dedication, Improvement, Leadership, Punctuality & Attention to training and State Selection at the U16 State Football Presentation night. Only 3 awards were given out on the night and it is a fantastic honour for Darcy to have his dedication to the team and performance acknowledged.

•The 1st XI soccer team won their recent knockout match against Trinity College 2-1 and have claimed a place in the final 4. Their next match is scheduled to be played on Tuesday 16th of September at Burton Park and we wish them every success.

Year 8 Debating Team Carter Smith won his 3rd CFS Cadet of the Year award

Mr Coop’s Year 10 Health and PE class have been studying Touch Rugby as part of their practical requirements for team sport in the curriculum. On Thursday 4th September, 10 of the boys took part in refereeing the Catholic Primary Schools Touch Carnival at Eastwood. The boys were allocated a pitch and began blowing the whistle from the very start. The move from player to official was made successfully as the lads got stuck into the vagaries of officiating Year 5-7 primary sides. The lads coped immensely well with the demands of multiple games with few breaks. All involved commended our boys on their knowledge, control and in some cases ability to coach the younger ones to succeed on the field. A big thanks to old collegian, Paul Panos for once again inviting us to be involved with this great opportunity to take on a leadership role.

John Coop

•The Rostrevor junior Rugby 7’s team enjoyed a remarkable victory in the recent championships played with a comprehensive 37 to 7 victory over Adelaide Highschool in the final. The senior team also made the final and were narrowly defeated by an U18 State squad playing as Brighton High. The game was tied at 12-12 in the last minute of play before a late try was scored by the opposing team. The boys played tremendously well and coach Mr Dash was extremely proud of their efforts.

•Year 9 student Carter Smith claimed his 3rd CFS Cadet of the Year award in his brigade, North Summit Ashton at their recent awards night.
