SpotlightMolly Brooks

To say that CROSS has had an impact on Molly Brooks’ life is an understatement.

A native of St. Simons Island, GA, Brooks was first exposed to the urban outreach

ministry of our church as a sixth-grader with her church youth group. Even at a young

age, the experience of worship, reflection and service left an impression: “CROSS was

my first real mission experience. I came at an age when you start to take ownership of

your relationship with God.”

After that, Molly came back every summer with her youth group until she graduated

high school. Over the years, the Lord used CROSS to teach Brooks some important

lessons: “It made me realize that God doesn’t

love me any more than he loves the homeless.

I think that was something that really got me

off my high horse and really humbled me. It

was a big wake up call.”

The CROSS interns also made a big impact on Molly, serving as “wonderful role

models in the faith.” In fact, it was through her connections with two interns that

eventually landed her at Queens University. Brooks isn’t shy about acknowledging it:

“CROSS got me to Charlotte.”

But the influence of CROSS didn’t stop there. When trying to decide her career path,

a youth group leader shared with her Fredrick Buechner’s famous quote: “The place God

calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” So

where was that intersection for Brooks?

The answer came immediately. “CROSS.” As a result, Brooks just finished her second

year of studying human services at Queens University and hopes to pursue a career in

non-profit administration or social work after graduation.

But Molly’s story with CROSS is still being written. Now that she is a CROSS intern

herself (for the second summer in a row), Brooks has the joy of seeing God work in the

lives of middle school and high school kids every day. Seeing that transformation, she

says, gives her hope.

Loaves & Fishes is an emergency food pantry program that has served the working poor and the “wish they were working” poor for the past 40 years.

• Last summer, the organization provided a week’s supply of nutritionally balanced food to more than 19,000 people – 48% (more than 9,000) of them children.

• July is one of their busiest months of the year since it is the only calendar month that public school is not in session.

• When there is no school there is also no federally subsidized breakfast and lunch program available for many children of low income parents. That means parents must stretch their grocery dollars to provide 10 additional meals a week per child.

Want to help? Donate to today’s loose offering and support Loaves & Fishes during their busiest and financially neediest time of the year.
