Michael Ian Fanning is president of the Business Partnership Foundation for the

Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. The foundation

was established as a tax-exempt nonprofit in 1969 to serve as a partnership between

business and academic communities to make the Moore School one of the best

business schools in the world. Before his election as president, Fanning was director of

sustainable development for Michelin North America.

Fanning joined Michelin North America in 1999 and in 2000 became vice president of corporate affairs, building on executive communications roles with Liberty Corp., Reader’s Digest Association, IBM and the Associated General Contractors of America. In 2011 he embarked on a five-year international assignment at Michelin’s headquarters in France to lead the company’s global program in sustainability, helping establish new company governance, goals and practices, during which time the company achieved the top ranking in the automotive parts sector in the Dow-Jones Sustainability Index. He returned to the United States in 2015, where he led Michelin’s sustainable development efforts in North America. Fanning is a past liaison-delegate to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, where he led the city task force for Sustainable Mobility Project 2.0 in Chengdu, China. He was also the company’s representative to the U.N. Global Compact and an advisory board member for the Initiative on Sustainability with The Conference Board. Fanning is a past chairman of the Consuming Industries Trade Action Coalition, and he held board positions with the Rubber Manufacturers Association and the Organization for International Investment, all based in Washington, D.C. He also served on the board of The Yellowstone Park Foundation, Bozeman, Mont., and the Automotive Hall of Fame, Dearborn, Mich. He is a past chairman and current member of the Advisory Council on Communication at the College of Charleston. Fanning is a native of Washington, D.C. He holds a bachelor’s degree in radio, TV and film from University College at the University of Maryland.
