RIP bushings technology, made and tested in Zurich, Switzerland

Leading in Bushings Technology

ABB Switzerland Ltd has been closely associated with innovation and quality for decades. Since the 1980s, the company has been the worldwide leader in Resin Impreg-nated Paper bushings (RIP), using an oil-free and thus dry and clean technology. RIP bushings are characterized by their outstanding technical performance: the small and lightweight design facilitates easy transportation, storage and installation while the oil-free construction requires absolutely no maintenance, is leakage-free and thus exceptionally safe and environmentally friendly. These characteristics combined with genuine Swiss quality make RIP bushings the first choice for even the most demanding applications. Our background Based in Zurich, ABB Switzerland originally produced merely traditional bushings such as OIP (Oil Impregnated Paper) and RBP (Resin Bonded Paper). As the world’s first company, ABB deve-loped its RIP bushings (resin impregnated paper) already in the 1960s. At the end of the 1980s, we were again the very first to start the production of 420 kV RIP bushings and in 1996 of 550 kV RIP bushings. For the last 30 years, ABB has been operating its bushings production exclusively with the superior RIP technology. The continuously improved design of Micafil RIP high-voltage bushings sets new standards regarding quality, reliability and state-of-the-art safety solutions. Being a member of the ABB Group since 2004, we have access to comprehensive

resources, particularly in the fields of high-voltage engineering, material research and applied physics. Your advantages We are familiar with your goals: increasingly ambitious targets of improved availability and prolonged lifetime, continuously advan-ced safety standards, more efficient capacity utilization of your assets, while cost pressure remains intense. To cope with these demanding objectives, many utilities throughout the world now rely on our RIP technology for good reasons: our bushings are the most dependable and safest, leading to an excellent cost- performance ratio. We therefore offer you a most valuable contri-bution towards reaching improved overall performance figures. Our solution The RIP bushings’ condenser bodies consist of solid cores. These are made of special crepe paper being wound following a certain sequence, and having numerous intermediate layers of coated aluminum foil embedded for the necessary electrical field grading. Subsequently, these paper condenser cores are vacuum dried and afterwards impregnated with a special epoxy resin. These computer controlled processes of vacuum drying and impregnati-on as well as the final curing are very sensitive. They are run under vacuum in tightly controlled ambient conditions and in hermetically sealed environments. We are proud of our leading position in this technology, providing our customers with profound expertise based on over 100’000 RIP bushings successfully in operation.

Superb engineering expertise

RIP bushing in detailCut-away of general design1. Depending on the current rating, the active part is wound on either a center tube or a solid conductor

2. Active part is made out of Resin Impregnated Paper body with inserted aluminium foils

3. Current transformer extensions: if current transformers are required, the ground sleeve is extended

4. MICAGEL dry filler

5. Mounting flange with integrated measuring tap

6. Porcelain or silicon composite insulator – for outdoor applications

7. Head with terminal (Al or Cu) and bushing’s sealing system

8. Transformer-side electrical shield ensures a smooth electrical field grading

Micafil RIP bushing AdvantagesExcellent electrical and thermal values– Partial discharge-free up to double service voltage– High thermal endurance (class E, 120 °C)– Low dielectric losses (tan δ <0.35 %)

Superb design– Compact, space-saving– No need for porcelain or composite insulator, except for outdoor use– Low weight– The materials are chosen to provide the lowest possible enviromental impact over the entire product life cycle

Highest operational safety– Installation, transportation and operation allowed in any position– No explosion risk for outdoor SF6 bushings (pressure-free bushings)– Fire resistant due to oil-free design– The new SeismicRIP® outdoor transformer bushings satisfy the highest seismic requirements

Service– Maintenance-free bushings

StandardsMicafil RIP bushings are specified and tested according to the latest IEC 60137 and IEEE C57.19.00/01 standards. The new line of SeismicRIP® outdoor transformer bushings satisfies the highest earthquake requirements as per IEEE Standard 693-2005.
