Game 4 • Miami vs. Illinois

need To knoW• The Miami University football team is coming off back-to-back 4-8 seasons under third-year head coach Don Treadwell.

• The RedHawks are coming off a 14-0 loss at home versus Cincinnati, which was the 118th meeting between the two schools. The contest was scoreless for the first three quarters before the Bearcats drove 79 yards to score on a 1-yard run with 4:55 remaining in the contest.

• The highlight of the game was the Miami defense, which held Cincinnati to just 369 yards of offense on 89 plays. Miami entered the game allowing 633 yards and 46.5 points per game in the first two weeks versus Marshall and Kentucky.

• Kent Kern (15), Josh Dooley (11), Heath Harding (7) and Bryson Albright (6) all had career-highs for tackles in a game. Harding, who was making his first career start at cornerback, recorded his first career interception late in the second quarter as the Bearcats were driving to take the lead.

• Harding, along with Dayonne Nunley and Chris Wade helped Miami force a season-high three turnovers in the game. Nunley picked up his 13th career interception and is now just three shy of the school record.

• Wade forced and recovered a fumble versus Cincinnati. It was his second straight game with a fumble recovery. Previously versus Kentucky he picked up a fumble during a Wildcat punt return and scored a touchdown from five yards out.

• Miami had a season-high eight tackles for loss versus UC. Albright led the way with 2.0, while Kern (1.5), Wade (1.5), Austin Brown (1.5), Harding (1.0) and J’Terius Brown (0.5) also chipped in.

• Speaking of Austin Brown, the senior captain blocked a 36-yard field goal to start the fourth quarter to keep the game scoreless, his third career blocked kick.

• Punter Zac Murphy continued his amazing senior season, averaging 52.4 yards per punt versus the Bearcats. The highlight though came late in the second quarter when he booted an 84-yard punt from his own endzone. The kick was the longest of Murphy’s career, established a new Miami and Yager Stadium record and ranks fourth in Mid-American Conference history.

Versus The BiG Ten• This will be the 58th time a Miami football team has faced a school from the Big Ten. The RedHawks are 12-43-2 all-time versus the Big Ten.

Lead Miami on a game winning drive that resulted in a 33-yard FG as time expired for a 24-21 victory.• Nov. 17, 2010 - Made his first career start on Nov. 17, 2010, a road contest versus Akron. As a red-shirt freshmen, he completed 22 of 33 passes for 213 yards and no turnovers, helping the RedHawks to a 19-14 MAC win.• Dec. 3, 2010 - Started the MAC Championship game versus Northern Illinois, throwing for 333 yards and one touchdown. That lone touchdown came with 33 seconds remaining in the game, helping Miami to a 26-21 MAC Championship win.• Jan. 6, 2011 - Completed his magical run by throwing for 289 yards and a career-high two touchdowns in a 35-21 win over Middle Tennessee State. Boucher earned MVP of the contest and received a kiss on the cheek from Danica Patrick during the postgame ceremonies.• All of 2011 and 2012 - Sat behind Dysert in each of the 2011 and 2012 seasons, seeing spot game action in 10 games while completing 13-of-23 passes for 158 yards and one touchdown in those two years.• Aug. 31, 2013 - Made his first start in 966 days versus Marshall.

douBle VisionWhile watching the game Saturday and you think you see Boucher playing offense and defense ... you would be correct ... sort of. Austin Boucher is expected to start at quarterback, while his twin brother Collin is a linebacker. More importantly ... Collin is 23 minutes older than Austin.

like FATher, like sonSophomore running back Spencer Treadwell has some tough blood lines to follow, considering his father will be pacing the Miami sideline as he enters his third year as the head coach of the RedHawks. Spencer is not the only other Treadwell playing Division I football. Coach Treadwell’s son, Blake, is a senior offensive lineman at Michigan State.

more FATherly loVeRed-shirt freshman Spencer McInnis is the son of Patrick McInnis, who played football at Eastern Michigan. His father has also been the CEO of Fathead since 2009.

on The mAr(C)kTight end Steve Marck matched his career-best with four receptions versus Marshall to open the 2013 season, finishing the contests with 41 receiving yards and a touchdown. Marck entered the contest versus the Thundering Herd with one career touchdown in 32 games ... he doubled that total in game 33.

He also has recorded 31 pass breakups and 19.5 tackles for loss during his career. As a freshman, Nunley was tabbed the Defensive MVP of the GoDaddy.com Bowl.

lone WolFDayonne Nunley is the only returning All-MAC performer from last season. Nunley, who earned first-team all-conference in 2012, was joined by Zac Dysert (QB), Nick Harwell (WR) and Andy Cruse (WR) on the All-MAC squad.

he’s GoT leGsHard to imagine Zac Murphy’s individual stats could be much better than they are after three games into the 2013 season. The senior ranks first in the nation with a punting average of 49.8 per kick. He has 12 punts of over 50 yards (4/game) and has added another six punts that were downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

Fred-XRed-shirt freshman Fred McRae made an instant impact in the RedHawk’s punt return game. In his first career return he went 14 yards, which may not seem like much, but Miami’s longest punt return in all of 2012 was 11 yards by Andy Cruse. McRae continued his hot start a week later, recording a 32-yard return at Kentucky. McRae is averaging 15.0 yards per punt return in 2013, which ranks first in the MAC and 15th nationally.

Top TACklersThe point has been made that this Miami team is very young, but looking at the defensive side of the ball, four of Miami’s top-10 tacklers are first year starters (Kent Kern, Josh Dooley, Jay Mastin and Bryson Albright). Kern is first on the team with 34 tackles, Dooley is third (23), Mastin is fifth (19) and Bryson Alright is eighth (15).

Miami University, known world-wide as the “Cradle of Coaches,” contributed four alumni to Sporting News Magazine’s 50 Greatest Coaches, dominating all other universities.

PAUL BROWN (`30) was named as the 12th greatest coach of all time by The Sporting News (TSN). Miamians WALTER ALSTON (`35) and BO SCHEMBECHLER (`51) ranked 35th and 36th on the list, while ARA PARSEGHIAN (`49) was selected as sports’ 44th great-est coach. A fifth man with Miami ties, WOODY HAYES, ranked 27th on TSN’s list. Hayes served as Miami’s football coach from 1949-50.

The August 3, 2009 publication asked a panel of 118 top coaches, media and sports administrators to choose the Top 50 list.

Altogether, only four universities contributed more than one alumnus to the list. Mi-ami’s four alumni topped Alabama (Paul “Bear” Bryant and Bobby Bowden), Minnesota (Bud Wilkinson and Herb Brooks) and Kansas (Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp), which each had two alums ranked among the Top 50. Purdue graduate John Wooden, the famed “Wizard of Westwood”, was ranked as the No. 1 coach of all time.

An Ohio native who was a two-year football letter winner (1928-29), paul Brown is a member of Miami’s “Cradle of Coaches” and excelled as a coach at the collegiate and professional levels. Brown was head coach at Ohio State (1941-43) and led the Buckeyes to their first national title in 1942. Brown then served as head coach at the professional level with the Cleve-land Browns (1946-62) and Cincinnati Bengals (1968-75), winning cham-pionships in the All-America Football Conference and National Football League. Brown was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967, and the current home stadium of the Bengals bears his name.

Always displaying a calm, professional demeanor, the unflappable Walter Alston managed the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers for 23 seasons (1954-76), winning seven National League pennants and four World Series championships. His squads would win 2,040 games during his tenure, the seventh-highest win total among major league managers. He helped to establish a “Dodger Way,” which many of his former players later used to become successful managers themselves.

A member of Miami’s “Cradle of Coaches” and the College Football Hall of Fame, Bo schembechler was a two-year letter winner (1949-50) and head coach (1963-68) with the Red and White. During his six seasons as head coach, schembechler led Miami to a 40-17-3 record and back-to-back conference co-championships (1965-66). schembechler then became the head coach at the University of Michigan (1969-89) and led the Wolverines to 13 Big Ten titles.

A member of Miami’s “Cradle of Coaches” and the College Football Hall of Fame, Ara parseghian was a football letter winner (1946-47) before moving to the sidelines as an assistant coach (1950) and head coach (1951-55). Dur-ing his five seasons as Miami’s head coach, parseghian compiled a 39-6-1 record and won back-to-back Mid-American Conference Championships (1954-55). parseghian went on to coach at Northwestern (1956-63) and Notre Dame (1964-74) where he was named National Coach of the Year in 1964.

don Treadwellhead CoachThird seasonmiami ‘82

Don Treadwell (Miami ’82) joined a digni-fied list of Miami graduates who ultimately became the head coach at their alma ma-ter on Dec. 31, 2010 and enters his third season at the helm of the RedHawk foot-ball program.

In two years guiding Miami, Treadwell has had seven RedHawks earn a combined nine All-Mid-American Conference honors, including two-time First-Team All-MAC defensive back Dayonne Nunley. Under Treadwell, two RedHawks also have gone on to be selections in the National Football League Draft with offensive lineman Brandon Brooks being drafted by the Houston Texans in 2012 and quarterback Zac Dysert by the Denver Broncos in 2013.

Treadwell, who is 8-16 as a head coach, has conducted a passing offense at Miami that has annually ranked among league lead-ers. For the past two seasons, Miami has ranked among the top two in passing offense, leading the MAC in conference games in 2012. Last season, these numbers were spurred by the league’s top quarterback in passing average as well as the MAC leader in receptions and reception yards per game.

Boasting nearly three decades of coaching experience, Treadwell assumed the head coach position at Miami after a four-year stint as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Michigan State. He joined Ara Parseghian, John Pont, Bo Schembechler, Bill Mallory, Tom Reed and Randy Walker among the list of Miami graduates to serve as head coach of the Red and White.

At Michigan State in his second stint with the Spartans, Treadwell engineered one of the most explosive offenses in the Big Ten. He was a nominee for the Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top assistant coach, in part for his role in leading the day-to-day team activities during Coach Mark Dantonio’s absence following Dantonio’s heart attack Sept. 19, 2010.

Without Dantonio in attendance, Treadwell, who normally coached in the booth, coached on the sidelines in MSU’s wins over Northern Colorado and 11th-ranked Wisconsin. Treadwell also coached on the sideline in victories against Michigan and Illinois while Dantonio was in the press box.

The 28-year coaching veteran was Dantonio’s offensive coordinator at the University of Cincinnati from 2004-06 and served under Brady Hoke as offensive coordinator at Ball State in 2003.

During his first stint at Michigan State, from 2000-02, he tutored several top receivers, including Charles Rogers, the 2002 Biletnikoff Award winner and the No. 2 pick of the 2003 NFL Draft.

Treadwell went to Michigan State following one season at North Carolina State (1999) where he coached the running backs. He previously spent two years at Boston College (1997-98) where he served as the co-offensive coordinator while also working with the quarterbacks and wide receivers.

Treadwell coached running backs under Tyrone Willingham at

Stanford from 1995-96, directing a Cardinal rushing attack that racked up 1,819 yards in 1995 -- the ninth-best single-season total in school history.

His coaching credits also include one season as a wide receivers coach at Cincinnati (1994), a two-year stay with Miami (1992-93) -- serving under Randy Walker -- and a six-year stint at Youngstown State (1986-91). Treadwell spent all of those seasons under former YSU and Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel. Dantonio was YSU’s defensive coordinator from 1986-90, while Treadwell worked with the wide receivers, running backs and quarterbacks during his time at Youngstown State. While serving as the offensive coordinator in 1991, he helped guide the Penguins to the NCAA I-AA National Championship.

Treadwell’s coaching resume also includes nine postseason bowl appearances.

Treadwell, who played for Coach Tom Reed, was a four-year starter at wide receiver at Miami (1978-81). He earned First-Team All-MAC honors as a junior and captained the team as a senior. With 73 career receptions for 1,540 yards, Treadwell averaged a school-record 21.1 yards per catch. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Miami in 1982. Born June 10, 1960, Treadwell graduated from Oberlin High School in 1978 where he played quarterback.

Married to the former Lola Pinskey of Fostoria, Ohio, Treadwell and his wife have three children: Whittney, Blake and Spencer. Blake is a senior offensive lineman for Michigan State, while Spencer is currently a running back on Miami’s football team.

John klacikoffensive Coordinator/Tight endsThird seasonlock haven ‘88

A veteran of more than 25 years of colle-giate coaching, John Klacik enters his third season as Miami’s offensive coordinator. He also serves as the RedHawks’ tight end coach, having taken over those duties in

2012 after serving as the team’s offensive line coach in 2011.

Under Klacik, the passing offense at Miami has annually ranked among league leaders. For the past two seasons, Miami has ranked among the top two in passing offense, leading the MAC in conference games in 2012. Last season, these numbers were spurred by the league’s top quarterback in passing average as well as the MAC leader in receptions and reception yards per game.

Klacik has seen two players go to be selections in the National Football League Draft. Offensive lineman Brandon Brooks was drafted by the Houston Texans in 2012, while quarterback Zac Dysert was picked by the Denver Broncos in 2013.

Klacik was head coach at his alma mater, Lock Haven, for six years. His other 19 years in the coaching profession have taken place at the FBS and FCS levels.

Previously, Klacik spent all but one season of his coaching career at Youngstown State and was a part of four NCAA I-AA National Championship teams. He started with the Penguins as the tight ends coach, working his way up the ladder through the offense, moving to wide receivers, quarterbacks, offensive line and then as offensive coordinator for his last four seasons.

Klacik worked under former Ohio State University head coach Jim Tressel for 12 years. He also spent the 2000 season at Divi-sion I Wake Forest University, working with the quarterbacks before returning to YSU in his most recent role. While with the Demon Deacons, Klacik worked under former Indianapolis Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell.

A standout wide receiver, Klacik graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sports/fitness management from Lock Haven in 1988. He led the Bald Eagles in receiving yards in each of his four seasons at LHU, ranking eighth in school history with 1,976 career yards.

Klacik and his wife, Amy, have three children: Abbey (18), Han-nah (15) and John III (12).

Jay petersondefensive Coordinator/linebackersThird seasonmiami ‘85

Jay Peterson begins the third season of his second stint on the Miami coaching staff in 2013. For the second straight sea-son, he’ll be the RedHawks’ defensive co-ordinator. He also is the team’s linebacker

coach, a role he has had since rejoining Miami in 2011. He was also the linebacker coach from 1991-98 under the late Randy Walker. The Hopedale, Ohio, native has 28 years of coaching experience at the professional, collegiate and high school lev-els.

The past two seasons have seen four of Peterson’s defensive players earn All-MAC honors. That includes two-time First-Team All-MAC defensive back Dayonne Nunley, who returns to anchor Peterson’s 2013 squad.

Peterson joined the RedHawks after two years at Illinois State. Prior to his time at ISU, Peterson spent five years at Eastern Michigan, where he served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach from 2004-08, while also holding the title of assistant head coach during the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

From 1999-2003, Peterson coached at Northwestern, first overseeing the linebackers and special teams before moving to the defensive line for the last two seasons.

During his first stint at Miami, Peterson was in charge of line-backers and helped with the special teams. During that time, he coached several All-MAC linebackers, including two-time MAC Defensive Player of the Year JoJuan Armour and Dustin Cohen, a third-team All-American.

Peterson has also spent time coaching in the professional ranks, spending three summers in the NFL Minority Coaching Internship program, serving various roles with the Indianapo-lis Colts (1995), Detroit Lions (1997) and Chicago Bears (2001). He was also an assistant football coach at three high schools in the Cincinnati area: Cadiz (1985-87), Anderson (1988-89) and Withrow (1990) High Schools.

As a player, Peterson was a standout running back, earning four varsity letters from 1980-83. His career total of 2,874 rush-ing yards still ranks fifth on Miami’s all-time career rushing list. He served as a co-captain as a senior and was a first-team All-MAC selection in 1982, a second-team pick in 1983 and an honorable mention choice in 1981.

Peterson earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education in 1985. He and his wife, Freda, have a daughter, Jada (18).
