AU GU ST 1 6, 20 12 Welcome back MHE families! It has been an exciting week as we welcome our students back for another year at MHE. We not only have many returning families, but also many new families that have made MHE their school of choice. Thank you all for a warm welcome. I have enjoyed getting to know many of our families. Prior to our school starting, our staff came back to reconnect, develop as professionals, and create classrooms that provide a welcoming and warm environment. Part of the time we spent together focused on our next steps at MHE. One of my goals this year will be timely and frequent communication with all of our stakeholders (staff, parents, students, and community). In my time at MHE I have discovered many strengths to showcase. One way of “showing” our stuff will be our new website. The purpose of our new site will be to provide you with current, up-to-date events at MHE, as well as resources that you will need as a parent. There will be many similarities, such as drop down tabs with links to resources. The “Meet the Staff” will remain a component of the site as soon as we update it with new photos and biographies. Some new features are: MHE Event Calendar, a picture slideshow to highlight school “happenings”, a weekly newsletter, and a Twitter account. We not only hope you enjoy the “look” of the new site, but find that it meets your needs as a parent. With that being said, areas we are still working on are “under construction”. We appreciate your patience. Fall Product Sale kicks off on August 21, so watch your students backpacks for more information. Please vote weekly for MHE on Target Gives. For every 25 votes, we receive a FREE $25 gift card. Show your support for MHE through September 8, 2012. As of 8/15/12 we have 58 votes!

Welcome back MHE families!

It has been an exciting week as we welcome our students back for another year at MHE. We not only have many returning families, but also many new families that have made MHE their school of choice. Thank you all for a warm welcome. I have enjoyed getting to know many of our families.

THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 2016 AUGUST 16, 2012

Hi parents! It is that time of year again where we get to look forward to the product fundraiser. As is customary we only have ONE product fundraiser so we like to do a GREAT job. Look for the product information to come home with your child on Tuesday August 21st. We are really excited because this year we have a new cookie dough recipe, along with soups, dip mixes, frozen foods, gifts, and even gluten free products. The web page has been updated so out of town friends and family can help your child as well. We really appreciate your hard work and efforts on MHE’s behalf. The success of our fundraiser helps us to be able to purchase laptops, ipads and Chrome Books. The goal is to have a set for each grade level. We also are looking into changing our math curriculum. So our goal of $85,000 is a big one but with everyone’s help we can do it, and it will help our children and staff!

Reminders! Check In!

If you are visiting our building for any reason, including our Mobile classrooms, please be sure to check in at the front

office.

Upcoming Assessment Days There will be no school on Thursday, September 6 and Friday,

September 7. These days will be used for assessing your students and by appointment only. We will have more

information regarding these days on our website next week and an online tool to sign up for your child’s appointment will be

available.

Arrival and dismissal at MHE has been going smoothly this week. Please remember the following items since student safety is our priority. 1. All students and parents need to cross the street at the crosswalk with the crossing guard. We ask that all individuals model safe behavior for our students. 2. Car Drop-Off lane – Use right lane only for drop-off. Please be sure there is someone to help your student out of the car and they may only get out on the curb side. 3. Parent Pick-Up Placards – Placards (rear-view mirror hangers) will be available to all families starting next week at the car drop-off lane to display your child’s name. If you still have one from last year, please start displaying it on your mirror. This will help us move through the lane more efficiently at dismissal. 4. No animals are allowed on school property per district and school policy. If you walk to school with child and pet, you need to stay off of school grounds.

IMPORTANT CogAT TESTING INFORMATION During the week of September 10th, all 3rd graders at MHE will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT 6). The results of these tests will serve several functions. First and foremost, the test scores will be used to drive instructional practices in the classroom. The scores will guide efforts to adapt teaching methods to the needs and abilities of students. The scores are also used as one component of the body of evidence to determine areas of strength and possible identification for gifted programming. This will also be the only opportunity during this school year for “referral” students in grades one, two, four, five, and six to take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT 6). Referral Requests are due by Tuesday, August 21st. The referrals for CogAT testing may come from the parent and/or the classroom teacher. Please connect with your child’s teacher if you have questions regarding the referral testing. All students participating in the referral testing process must have a signed “consent to test form”. This form is available from classroom teachers or Bekah Crispin (RtI/GT Coordinator). *Please Note: In order to provide the best possible testing environment for all students, this testing window replaces the Saturday test sessions scheduled in previous years.

THE LOREM IPSUMS SUMMER 2016

An educational outreach program of the Colorado Chamber Orchestra

Music instruction is available to your 4th, 5th, and 6th grade child this year on a wide variety of orchestra or band instruments! Playing a musical instrument has been shown to improve academic achievement, social skills and problem solving ability. But, most of all, it is fun!

Band and orchestra are offered at Mammoth Heights Elementary as a before school enrichment program. Information, including days and times is available on the CHEIM website: http://www.cheim.webs.com/

Tuition scholarships are available for siblings and those on free or reduced lunch: http://cheim.webs.com/registrationforms.htm

We have several opportunities coming up for the budding musician. An Introductory Instrument Assembly is scheduled for each grade during the first week of school. Fourth, fifth and sixth graders will have a chance to actually try out instruments that they may play in band or orchestra!

You may then rent or purchase instruments at a music open house that is scheduled for Wednesday, August 29 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Chaparral High School. You may also make your own arrangements to acquire an instrument or ask about a scholarship for one of several instruments owned by the school or CCO.

Another exciting event we have planned is the MHE JAMS Concert on Thursday, August 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. Teachers, students and friends will perform a benefit concert to raise money for scholarships to our CHEIM program at Mammoth Heights.

Please feel free contact me if you have questions or would like more information about this exciting opportunity for your child.
