the Flemington and Kensington Legal Centre last February, a er claims by the men that they were racially discriminated against in the Flemington and North Melbourne areas between 2005 and 2009.
e report includes plans for a one-year pilot program requiring police to issue contact receipts and undergo mandatory
police report into equality an optimistic first step: african-australiansracial profiling
A community ambassador at the centre of a civil case over alleged racial pro ling of African-Australian men has welcomed a landmark report aimed at improving strained relations between Victorian police and African youth.
But Maki Issa, one of six men involved in the racial pro ling case, said interactions between police and African youth in the west remained tense despite signi cant inroads. e men, who were teenagers at the time, say they were assaulted by police and were o en stopped, questioned and searched because they were black.
Mr Issa’s comments come in the wake of the Victoria Police Equality is not the Same report, a three-year plan aimed at reducing racial pro ling. e report is the result of a court settlement reached between police and
racial pro le training. Mr Issa said implementing the recommendations of the report were a step towards addressing the issue of racial pro ling.
“It is an optimistic rst step that will ensure transparency and hopefully a reduction in pro ling,” he said. “While the relationship between the [police] force and youth has improved in some areas, there are still youth coming to me saying they are facing unfair treatment or that they feel targeted and intimidated by the police.”
Mr Issa added that he wanted to see the words “discrimination” and “racism” incorporated more intensely in the report.
Legal Centre chief executive o cer Anthony Kelly said the report showed that Victoria Police had listened to the views of the community and acknowledged the validity of their concerns. “ e accountability measures, data monitoring and receipting, if
used together, can form the sort of reforms needed and potentially place Victoria Police among the leaders around the world in trying to abolish discriminatory policing.” \

land swap tagged ‘obscene’ altona north
An environment group has slammed Hobsons Bay council’s “obscene free gi ” of public land to a multimillion-dollar company.
Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek is objecting to the loss of a parcel of land adjoining Altona North Land ll. Melbourne Water is also objecting.
Friends vice-president Simon Hogan said members had fought hard to have the land in McArthurs Road protected .
Mr Hogan said the council o cers had recommended giving away a bigger parcel as part of a land swap so an industrial park could be built.
“It’s not just rezoning it – they’re e ectively giving it away for nothing,” he said. “ ey’re saying it’s a land swap, but the land that they’re giving away is considerably bigger
than the land they’re getting back, so what the o cers are proposing is a free gi from Hobsons Bay to a multi-millionaire. It’s obscene to me, really.”
In 1994, a company, now known as Altona North Land ll, bought the property at 55
McArthurs Road and was required to return a parcel of land to the council to create an environmental bu er.
Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said she understood concerns raised by the Friends
group. “ e submissions will be referred to an independent panel which
will forward its recommendation to the council,” she said.
Melbourne Water manager Cameron Howie said that, “as with any site of environmental and social value”, there were concerns about industrial use of the land .
Altona North Land ll did not respond to phone calls and emails by deadline. \

time to restart my career, says ex-mayorEND OF AN ERA
Hobsons Bay councillor and former mayor Tony Bri a has resigned a er six years, citing a desire to focus on family and international human rights campaigning, and to work as an aerospace engineer.
Former mayor Michael Ra oul is tipped to replace Cr Bri a in a countback, which will be conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission at 9.30am on March 13.
“A er getting married last year, I would like to spend more time with my family but also take time to focus on my human rights work and restart the career I put on hold while devoting my energy to the council and local community,” said Cr Bri a, who previously convened the residents’ association.
“ It’s now the time, I think, to focus on just having a family life, enjoying time with [spouse] Manja and focusing on my career.
“I do miss aviation, because I formerly worked for airlines and then the Department of Defence. As for the human rights stu , human rights is a passion of mine.
“It has been a hard decision. I’ve discussed this with the CEO for the past year.”
Cr Bri a, who represents Cherry Lake ward, became the world’s rst intersex mayor in 2011. is week, Cr Bri a will leave for Turkey, followed by a trip to Darwin in May, to raise awareness of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (GLBTIQ) human rights issues.
Cr Bri a’s time on the council was plagued by a 20-month dispute a er Cr Peter Hemphill alleged Cr Bri a had breached the councillor code of conduct.
“As I re ect on some of the highlights during my time on the council I think about the work I’ve done for people with disabilities,
GLBTIQ and elderly people, and the multicultural community,” Cr Bri a said. “I think about the improvements to the Altona and Seaholme foreshore, many local reserves, local footpaths and shopping precincts. I think about new community
facilities like the Altona North Community Library and Laverton Hub, about
the families and kids I’ve met , and special events like the Altona Beach Festival, GoWest (as part of the Midsumma Festival), representing the city at the Pride March, and the
various events I held as mayor for people with disabilities and the elderly.
“I am pleased I successfully fought against issues such as the use of methyl bromide in the area, and raised the pro le of issues such as air quality in Altona, Altona North and Brooklyn.” \

marsich returns to council fold
hobsons bay
New Hobsons Bay councillor Carl Marsich says that supporting Toyota workers is the biggest immediate challenge facing the municipality.
Last ursday ’s countback of votes by the Victorian Electoral Commission saw Cr Marsich elected with an absolute majority of 3098 votes a er 4748 ballot papers were distributed.
He replaces Luba Grigorovitch in Wetlands ward, which covers the suburbs of Altona Meadows, Seabrook and Laverton.
Ms Grigorovitch resigned to become the rst woman and youngest person to take the helm of Victoria’s Rail, Tram and Bus Union.
e pair had been running mates in the council election.
Cr Marsich, an occupational health and safety o cer in the Community Public Sector Union, has twice served as mayor and was rst elected to the council in 1996.
“I suppose one of the most immediate circumstances we face at the moment will be the impending closure of Toyota in two or three years, which is certainly going to have a massive impact on our local community,” he said.
“ I want to ensure that we’re on the front foot in regards to whatever we can do from the council perspective to deal with the fallout coming out of that decision .” \ GD

parents won’t take no for an answerYARRAVILLE
Parents have vowed to keep pressure on VicRoads and the state government a er the agency rejected installing ashing 40km/h speed zone lights on a busy Yarraville truck route.
Narelle Wilson said the decision to reject the lights, revealed by the Weekly last month, was a failure of common sense.
“ e fact we have three schools on a major truck route would surely make it appropriate; anyone who spent time at the crossing would see that it was sensible,” she said.
“I know lots of parents are concerned about the situation ... most parents have seen trucks passing through red lights.
“It would make a big di erence in terms of speed .”
VicRoads regional director Patricia Liew said a working group was formed last year to consider short and medium-term options for truck movements and their impacts in the inner west. e group draws together the heads of VicRoads, EPA Victoria, Department of Health and City of Maribyrnong.
“On February 27, they will host the rst of several community consultation sessions to discuss these complex problems... all residents

e results are expected to be available to the public by mid-year. \ BM

are strongly encouraged to attend,” Ms Liew said.
Neither VicRoads nor Roads Minister Terry Mulder would comment on why there was no community representation within the working group.
Mr Mulder said the state government took the issue of road safety very seriously.
VicRoads also carried out a survey in

blitz swipes graffiti in endless fightclean-up
A ve-month blitz has scrubbed almost 13,000 square metres of illegal gra ti from Maribyrnong walls.
But the council faces an uphill battle in its ght to rid the city of its “bad look”, according to mayor Grant Miles, who said a “staggering amount of illegal gra ti” was removed.
e blitz, from July to November last year, removed 12,614 square metres of gra ti from public and private property.
“Illegal gra ti is a bad look for our city and the removal blitz has made it look a lot better,” he said. “Although the blitz was a success,
“Council’s long-term plan to reduce gra ti is to engage with young people through public art pieces and work with regional stakeholders on the gra ti issue,” Cr Miles
said. e council will work on the
plan with other inner Melbourne councils and lobby group LeadWest as well as spray paint industry representatives, retailers and
enforcement agencies. \BENJAMIN MILLAR

we acknowledge that it will not stop gra ti returning.”
Council has allocated $130,500 for gra ti removal in 2013-14, with about $100,000 spent during the blitz.
e cost of the blitz and ongoing illegal gra ti management has spurred the council to focus on preventing gra ti from spreading in the rst place.
e council is developing a plan to tackle illegal gra ti in the wake of residents, traders, councillors and police becoming increasingly fed up with the “negative visual e ects of gra ti”.

■ “For God’s sake, there is no country in the world that I know of that’s returning Eritreans.”
God bless you for describing how horrifying and terrorising the nation for which thousands of its sel ess brave men and women perished has become .
Today Eritrea is a place where incarceration without due process, torture, disappearances, summary execution, slavery and rape have become the order of the day. These atrocities have been carried out by one-time liberators turned oppressors and they continue unabated . As if the never-ending slavery and rape is not enough, the brutal dictator implemented a “shoot to kill policy” against its own citizens who ee repression.
Thousands are believed to have been shot at around the border area.
As to Mr Rezene Engida, I can’t come to terms with why he committed suicide as if Australia is
the only place in the world. He could have gone anywhere . May God rest his soul . I extend my condolences to his family.YEMEN GEBREGIOGIS \ VIA WEB

TOYOTA DEPARTS
■ Typical from the ALP, as we can see from Kim Carr’s disgraceful comments. Let’s pretend that
Labor wasn’t in power when Ford made the decision to cease production in Australia. Let’s pretend that a three-month-old Coalition government was to blame for Holden’s decision to leave the country, not the previous six-year Labor administration. Large corporations like Holden and Toyota make decisions on their future years in advance, not all of a sudden, as Kim Carr would have us believe.
The blame for the loss of tens of thousands of automotive jobs lies squarely with the ALP. TONY A \ VIA WEB

Parents cried tears of joy last Tuesday a er Hobsons Bay council unanimously voted not to outsource Altona Meadows and Altona North early learning centres.
More than 100 parents, children and Australian Services Union (ASU) representatives had rallied in front of the council chamber to support the centres, which provide childcare for more than 200 children.
ASU Victorian and Tasmanian branch secretary Brian Parkinson said the council had been threatened with a Federal Court injunction on the eve of last week’s meeting.
In December, 80 childcare sta had been told they had to reapply for their jobs. A petition against the outsourcing was signed by more than 600 people.
An independent review of the centres, which examines “veracity of nances” and other factors, will be undertaken. \

youth program under threat crime prevention
A successful program diverting at-risk western suburbs youth from a life of crime will fold without urgent support, according to its head.
Operation Newstart has assisted more than 2000 of the state’s most vulnerable young people, including almost 500 in the western suburbs.
Executive o cer Phil Wheatley told the Weekly the award-winning program was likely to disappear without urgent help from the state government and Victoria Police.
“We are operating ve programs this term with the support of schools, but the outlook in the medium term is very problematic.”
Last year the federal government allocated the program a $300,000 grant from the National Crime Prevention Fund, but the o er was withdrawn by the new Coalition government. Late last year, Victoria Police withdrew its operational support, leaving the program without the police o cers who were a lynchpin of its success, according to Mr Wheatley.
“All of the evidence shows that by keeping kids in school as long as possible
there is a real chance of enabling them to have productive lives.”
Opposition police spokesman and Wiliamstown MP Wade Noonan raised the matter in State Parliament, calling on Police Minister Kim Wells to meet with program leaders.
“Many of the secondary school-aged young people who have bene ted from this program have been described as gi ed, but
through a variety of circumstances they have fallen on hard times and
dabbled in crime, drugs, alcohol or other antisocial behaviours,” Mr Noonan said.
“As such, many drop out of school and potentially consign
themselves to lives lacking hope or direction. at is why Operation
Newstart matters to them.”Footscray MP Marsha omson said
Operation Newstart had proven a success in Footscray, with 480 completing the program.
“If the Napthine government wants to maintain a shred of credibility in the area of crime prevention then they need to support Operation Newstart in Footscray.”
e minister’s o ce did not respond to a request for comment. \

‘kidnap’ commuters’ anger growsPUBLIC TRANSPOrt
Altona Loop commuters on the Werribee train line, who are fed up with being “kidnapped, dumped and bypassed”, will hold a community forum next month.
e Werribee line, which splits at Newport, received extra services in 2011 when trains were scheduled to run every 10-12 minutes.
But Altona Loop commuters had peak-hour trains cut to one every 22 minutes and became the only people in Melbourne who change trains up to three times to get to the City Loop.
Loop Group spokeswoman Jennifer Williams said people were frustrated with trains bypassing the loop, dumping passengers at Newport or running express to Laverton to save time.
Such trains are nicknamed by locals the “kidnap express”.
“ e main concern is that the train service is very unreliable and we keep getting cancellations, dumpings and, very occasionally, ‘kidnappings’,” Ms Williams said. “Kidnapping is when you’re on the train at Newport, the doors shut and the train leaves the station and en route you’re
told that the train will be going direct to Laverton. Patronage is also down and I think that’s because a lot of people have abandoned the three stations on the loop.”
Seaholme resident Maree Kinniburgh said that on January 15 and 16, when temperatures topped 40 degrees, Altona Loop trains were cancelled and there were no replacement buses between Newport and the Altona Loop.
“Passengers were advised to extend their journey signi cantly and travel past
all Altona stations to Laverton station, then catch public buses numbers
411 and 412 back to their Altona destinations.”
In a letter dated January 31, Metro customer relations co-ordinator Michael Krause
replied: “We acknowledge the pre-planned cancellation of several
Laverton-bound services created a gap in services and caused an inconvenience to those customers directly a ected. However, pre-planning and announcing these cancellations allowed our customers to adjust their travel plans accordingly.” \

comedy behind the curtainYARRAVILLE
Comedy fans can enjoy a behind-the-scenes peek at the Australian comedy scene thanks to a new book by Yarraville comedian and author Rusty Berther.
From over-zealous hecklers to colourful encounters with bikies, the less glamorous side of show business is there, warts and all.
e Scared Weird Little Guys performer explains that the title What, and give up showbiz? is the punchline to a joke about the less glamorous side of the performing life.
“You can do lots of bad, weird, crappy things in showbiz, but you’re still in showbiz,” he said. e idea for the book developed during the countless hours Berther spent sitting around back stage, when everyone starts sharing stories about bad gigs or weird situations.
“I interviewed over 40 comedians and a few musicians and about a third of the book comes from my own experiences,” Berther said. Performers interviewed for the book include Wil Anderson, Adam Hills, Dave O’Neill, Julia Morris, Rod Quantock, Georgina McEncroe, Lawrence Mooney and Corinne Grant.
e book will be launched by Dave O’Neil at the Sun eatre, Yarraville, at 6 tonight,
with special guest comedians sharing their favourite anecdotes from the book. \

all-in call for vaccineIMMUNISATION
Ninety- ve per cent of children living in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong will need to be immunised by the time they start school under a new state government push to boost the state’s vaccination rates.
e government believes the best way to protect children from preventable diseases is to li Victoria’s average vaccination rates from 93 per cent to 95 per cent.
Latest government gures reveal that as of December last year, 93.65 per cent of ve-year-olds in Hobsons Bay were fully immunised, while 93.1 per cent of children starting school in Maribyrnong had received all their vaccinations.
Health Minister David Davis said immunisations were the best defence against illness and death from vaccine-preventable diseases.
“Starting school means that children are in contact with a larger number of people, which can expose them to a range of potentially dangerous diseases, so making sure they are fully immunised is the best protection we can give them,” he said.
South Western Melbourne Medicare Local chief executive Linda Kensington
said some children went unimmunised because their parents were busy and forgot to attend appointments, while others did not understand when their children were meant to be vaccinated.
She said some parents were reluctant to vaccinate their children, believing immunisations would harm them.
Western suburbs mum Tasha David said parents had the right to chose whether or not they vaccinated their children.
e mother of eight children, who is a member of an anti-immunisation group, vaccinated her six eldest children but chose not to immunise the other two.
Ms David said she decided not to vaccinate her two youngest children a er those who had been vaccinated developed behavioural and learning problems.
“It was a clear-cut decision for us. e two who are unvaccinated are completely healthy,” she said. “It was de nitely the right decision for my family.”
Australian Academy of Science president Suzanne Cory urged parents to base their decisions on the best scienti c evidence available. Professor Cory said studies had ruled out links between vaccinations and health problems, such as autism. \

georgia’s watery frolics a recipe for pure happiness Kensington
e happiest time of the week for Georgia Hayes is when she is able to enjoy the sublime freedom of swimming.
Her weekly swimming lessons are a milestone for the Kingsville 13-year-old, who has autism and an intellectual impairment.
For six years Georgia has taken part in weekly one-on-one lessons held by the YMCA at the Kensington Community Recreation Centre.
Her father, Brian, has dubbed it the “half-an-hour of happiness”.
“Her anxiety levels go down to almost zero and the freedom of the water means she doesn’t have to worry about the sensory stu ,” he said.
“It’s probably the most relaxed half-an-hour in her week. I just have to say we’re going swimming and she’s happy.”
Mr Hayes said the sta at the centre had made all the di erence for Georgia, who these days spends 80 per cent of her lessons diving under water.
“She is just gorgeous to watch,” he said. “She spends a lot of the time doing breast-stroke and loves performing handstands for everybody.
“She has had 12 di erent teachers in the
past six years ... while that was a challenge at the start, it’s helped her to learn and develop how to handle di erent people.
“It has also been great for the sta because it has taught them how to deal with a non-verbal student.”
Mr Hayes says sleep for the family is regularly compromised and the exhaustion and struggles of caring for a child with special needs o en takes a heavy toll. Despite having a strong family and support network, respite care for Georgia does not happen o en enough.
“It’s important that more people understand disability and aren’t afraid
or turn away,” Mr Hayes said. “It’s also a relief for us to know that Georgia has learned how to be safe around water.”
On March 2, the YMCA will hold a swimathon at the Kensington
Community Recreation Centre to raise money for programs that provide
swimming lessons for children who are disabled, indigenous, disadvantaged or of migrant or refugee backgrounds.
ey embody four groups that are grossly over-represented in Victoria’s drowning statistics.
Centre manager Kon Kakris says helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds, such as Geogria, is at the heart of the programs. \

They just don’t make apartments like this one any more. Its solid bones will be cherished well into the future.
At the back of a block of five apartments, the ground-level property has a lot going for it.
With two spacious bedrooms it will suit a range of buyers who will appreciate its inner-ring locale and low body corporate fees.
The apartment has gradually been modernised. Both bedrooms are freshly painted and have sheer drapes and floor-to-ceiling mirror-faced wardrobes.
They share a renovated bathroom with shower including detachable head. The bathroom also incorporates a European laundry.
The timber kitchen has floating floorboards,
a Simpson stainless-steel dishwasher and Technika oven and electric cooktop. There’s also a wine rack, loads of shelving and a large LG split-system. A small area for casual dining abuts a good-sized, carpeted lounge room.
The courtyard has raised garden beds and brush-screened fences.
The apartment has dual street access, with Sydney Street at the back and a set of private
gates leading to its one open car space on title.Other features include large windows
throughout and roller shutters and the square-set concrete walls have recently been painted. The apartment is a short drive to Highpoint shopping centre and within walking distance of West Footscray railway station and the hustle and bustle of Barkly Street. \

FEBRUARY 19, 2014 \ MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY WEEKLY 47
The grey nomads are taking to Australia’s roads in increasing numbers. Here, some of them explain why they love an open
road and o er tips for other travellers. “WE LIKE TO BE MASTERS OF OUR OWN DESTINY”
Stan and Margaret Woolard, from Newcomb in Geelong, are in their late 70s. ey travel Australia in their Mercedes Sprinter motorhome.
During 30 years with Victoria Police, Stan avidly read about the outback. So when he retired, he and Margaret decided to see some far- ung places themselves.
On their rst trip they travelled for 10 months, nicknaming that adventure the “Australia All Over” tour.
“We travelled 26,500 kilometres,” he says. “One night I remember stopping for dinner at the now defunct old-style Darwin Hotel. Margaret and I sat outside surrounded by palm trees and had a nice bottle of wine.”
In September, the Woolards travelled to Mildura, Hay and Gri th in NSW and then north-east to Queensland. On the way home, they stopped at Burren Junction to enjoy the hot water springs and crossed country Victoria to Geelong.
“Travelling in this way has enabled us to see
places we’d never otherwise see,” Stan says. “We wouldn’t go on a coach tour because we don’t want to be bound by someone else’s itinerary. We like to be masters of our own destiny.”■ Join the Campervan & Motorhome Club of
Australia.■ Don’t camp within 20 kilometres of a
small township so you don’t annoy locals, and pick up rewood before you get to a campsite. Well-used campsites may already have been stripped of rewood.
■ Talk to fellow travellers when you stop for morning tea or lunch – particularly people arriving from the opposite direction. ey can tell you where to buy cheap fuel and nd roadside stalls selling fresh food and the best free camping spots.
“WE WENT ON LONG-SERVICE LEAVE AND NEVER RETURNED”
Kath and Rex Breen are in their early 60s. ey sold their horticultural business about 10 years ago and have since spent part of every year travelling and volunteering in Queensland.
e Breens’ Winnebago Alpine motorhome has its own generator, water supply, solar panels and toilet and shower, so when
the couple take to the road they can be self-su cient. In the several years since they have owned their motorhome, they’ve travelled about 94,000 kilometres, mostly from Victoria to Queensland.
Every winter they head north to help out with Volunteers for Isolated Students’
Education. e couple set up their motorhome on a rural property.
“From late May to early September, we travelled as far as Townsville and then headed west
and spent seven weeks on a cattle and sheep property,” Rex says. “Kath
taught the children, and I helped with shearing and fencing o dams.
“ ere’s nothing better than pulling up at night and watching the moon rise, or listening to the birds singing at sunrise.”
e couple will do another volunteer trip to Queensland this winter and they’d also like to take their motorhome to Darwin and Tasmania.
eir longest trip has been a three-and-a-half-month trip to WA and around the coast of Australia.
“It’s formed a strong bond between us. We o en say, ‘Do you remember when we went there?’ ” Kath says.
“We’ve shared some great experiences and met some interesting people.”■ Buy as good a motorhome as you can a ord
and a vehicle that is well-maintained.■ Don’t be put o by licence requirements
and limit yourself to a vehicle that you can drive with a car licence. It’s not overly di cult to get an endorsed licence to drive a bigger vehicle.
■ Plan each leg of your journey so you know where to stop overnight, where dump points are located and where you can buy provisions. \

MOTORING \ ron hammerton drives the lexus is 300h f sport
car – and draws on it under acceleration to cut fuel consumption. Combined, these motors deliver 164 kilowatts of power and 221 newton metres of torque.
Of course, hybrid technology is all about fuel savings, and Lexus claims its contender can achieve 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the official combined fuel consumption test. As per our usual experience, this does not translate to the real world but something
in the high 5.0s is possible. Like some other Lexus/Toyota hybrids, the IS 300h can provide a certain amount of electric-only driving, but only at under 40km/h for a short distance.
The price premium for the privilege of electric assistance is $3000 above the petrol-only IS 250, but the 300h is more than $6000 cheaper than the more powerful IS 350, which starts at $65,000 (plus on-road costs).
Having given rival Mercedes-Benz a 100-year head-start in the luxury car business, Lexus leapt out of the starting
blocks like, well, a tortoise in 1989.Lexus founder Eiji Toyoda knew from his
background as president of Toyota that brand reputation is earned, not bought. He put his fledgling prestige car division on the sure and steady path to success, one flawless paint job at a time. Lexus is still a work in progress, gradually filling its model line-up from the original one – the LS limousine – to nine passenger-car model lines today.
Lexus made it hard for itself by eschewing “dirty” diesel engines and turbos, instead embracing petrol-electric hybrids and normally aspirated petrol engines. Don’t hold your breath for a Lexus diesel any time soon and the first turbo is still in the pipeline, but at least you can now buy a fuel-efficient hybrid version of Lexus’ top-selling model, the mid-sized IS, in the new third generation.
The IS 300h, as the hybrid variant of Lexus’ BMW 3 Series competitor is called, sits in the middle of the IS range, between the 2.5-litre V6 IS 250 and flagship 3.5-litre V6 IS 350. The 300h uses a combination of 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor, driving the rear wheels via a fancy continuously variable transmission.
Like other hybrids in the Toyota/Lexus armoury, the IS 300h recoups electricity generated under braking and stores it in a battery – in this case under the back of the
The IS 300h is available in two specifications – Luxury and F Sport – with the latter adding touches such as a unique front grille treatment, an extra Sport+ driving mode with active dampers and bigger 18-inch alloy wheels with low-profile tyres.
Our major complaint with the 300h would be the low-level whine from the electric power train and its CVT transmission, which is exacerbated by the otherwise super-quiet cabin experience.
But we have plenty of bouquets, too, starting with the wonderful ergonomics for the driver. Standard gear includes keyless smart entry, heated and ventilated seats, digital radio and, on F Sport variants, an upmarket Mark Levinson audio.
An all-new body gains a stretched wheelbase, which in turn has enhanced rear leg room.
We will finish on two of our favourite aspects of the new IS – its glorious road manners and world-beating fit and finish.
For the first time, Lexus has truly matched the Germans in steering and handling, making the IS a joy to drive. Add the wonderful driving position, classy fat steering wheel and supportive seats, and the IS puts Munich, Stuttgart and Ingolstadt on notice.
With unmatched quality backed by a four-year warranty, the IS must be on every mid-sized luxury car buyer’s list. Yep, the tortoise is breathing down their necks. \

falcons swoop in openerNetball
City West Falcons have allayed fears of a premiership hangover with a total dismantlement of local rivals VU-Western Lightning in the Victorian Netball League championship season opener at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night.
e Falcons were fast starters, bursting to an eight-goal quarter-time lead, an advantage they would only increase in a ruthless 52-34 win. An upbeat Falcons assistant coach Nicole Richardson was impressed by the completeness of the performance so early in the season.
“To come up against VU in the rst round ... they’re a really tough opponent, so to be able to put the four quarters in like the girls did was great to see, particularly when you’re talking about round one,” she told the Weekly.
“We came out of the blocks ring, which is pleasing because in the past against VU we’ve been slow with our starts.
“It was a focal point for the team and that basically set up the match.”
Rookie Alice Teague-Neeld was a selection surprise when rst-choice goal shooter Kath Knott was a late withdrawal with a hamstring injury. Teague-Neeld made the most of her rst championship start with a stellar game in the attacking circle.

one of the VNL’s best defensive combinations. “For a rst-up performance at that level, she did a great job,” Richardson said. “She only missed one goal under what I would classify as the toughest defensive combinations in the competition in Fiona emann and Brooke ompson.
“She o ered a bit of speed for us and caused a bit of havoc for their circle defenders.”
e Falcons missed only three shots all night with last year’s championship-winning goaler Julia Knott scorching with 25-from-27 for 93 per cent. at might create a selection headache for tonight’s second round game with Kath Knott scheduled to return.
e Falcons’ mid-court ran smoothly on night one with Maggie Lind thriving on her new wing attack role alongside centre Liz Watson.
Casey Price was the stand-out defender for the Falcons, but the Lightning’s front line resembles nothing like the one that made it to the preliminary nal last season and is still a work in progress.
“ at was their rst hitout with that combination so they’re still nding their feet,” Richardson acknowledged.
e Falcons will host Ballarat Pride at the State Netball and Hockey Centre tonight at 7, while the Lightning will meet the Southern Saints at the same time on an adjacent court. \

seagulls fail to fly in western derbyCricket
Williamstown was le pining for a game breaker in a 46-run road loss to Werribee in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association western derby at Chirnside Park on Saturday.
While the home side got signi cant output from stars Tim O’Brien (106no) and Heath Pritchard (5-38), the Seagulls were littered with promise but lacking in a player who could take the bull by the horns and drag them to victory.
e Seagulls were gallant in their run chase, reaching 192 on the second day.
At times, they made the Tigers’ imposing target of 239 appear attainable, but the lack of a player raising the bat – no one went on to reach 50 – would prove costly.
“ ere’s 106 out of 239 [by O’Brien] and ve-for out of 10 wickets [by Pritchard] that need to be taken,” Werribee captain Shaun Dean told the Weekly.
“ e two stand-out performers were the di erence for us in the overall scheme of things.”
e Seagulls could have done without a slow start. ey were 2-7 with both openers back in the pavilion and it put pressure on the middle order.
Craig Sheedy (29), Brenton Hodges (28) and Jonty Paulsen (33) breathed life into the chase, but each departed seemingly as if about to click into top gear.
A 68-run eighth-wicket partnership between Jordan Doyle (41) and Sam Davis (17) provided late hope for the Seagulls, but it was snu ed out in the worst possible way when Davis was run out with a direct hit from Tigers mid-wicket elder Adam Alifraco.
 e Seagulls are a he y 10 points outside
the top six and their nals chances seem all but over.
ey will need to take maximum points when Sunshine travels to the Williamstown
Cricket Ground for a two-day match starting on Saturday to have even a glimmer of hope when the nal round arrives. \

dean, russ star for gritty bulldogs
premier Cricket
Footscray Edgewater has been le with no choice but to bat into the second day of its clash with Camberwell Magpies when play resumes at the Camberwell Sports Ground on Saturday.
e Bulldogs were blindsided by the conditions, opting to bat on a damp pitch that maintained its moisture under overcast skies.
Bulldogs coach Steve Chapman was proud of the grit and determination shown by his batsmen to compile 7-230 on a rain-interrupted rst day, but he says there’s still work to be done .
“It was a tough day, but I was impressed with the way we applied ourselves,” he said.
“It was a day that needed a lot of patience and a lot of skill .
“On any given day, I wouldn’t be encouraging our side to bat on for a second day, but the way this panned out we’ll obviously need to use some of those overs next week.”
First drop Travis Dean almost made it back-to-back tons , but fell short on 95.
His steely resolve to bat for 277 minutes and face 231 balls was in contrast to his free- owing innings of a week earlier .
“Last week, he was uent and nding the gaps, while this week he was tough and hit a lot of good ball for no runs,” Chapman said.
Dean Russ contributed 49 from an opening spot and Sunam Gautam added 30 from the middle order.
Russ topped a solid week at the crease a er top-scoring with 88 for Victoria in a Futures League game.
A call-up to the Victorian Bushrangers squad for the She eld Shield may be on the horizon.
“We would like to think he’s presenting a good case all the time,” Chapman said.
As the captain, Russ’s value to the Bulldogs is more than just a matter of runs and averages – it is weighed in leadership qualities and sel ess attitude.
Chapman said it was his role to “have the back” of Russ so he could play a bit more sel shly and try to take that next step into rst-class cricket.
“He’s been head and shoulders leading the way,” Chapman said.
“But I said to him at Christmas, ‘Just do some stu for yourself, rather than worrying about everybody around you’.
“I just want him to make some sel sh runs – he’s had everyone’s back in the team this year.”
A er the Bushrangers slumped to a record low 6-9 in a recent clash with New South Wales, perhaps the Bushrangers could use a steady hand such as Russ at the top of the batting order. \ LJ
love saves day for eaglesCricket
Matthew Love was a last-gasp hero for Yarraville in a cli anger four-wicket win over Altona in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at JK Grant Reserve on Saturday.
It was only tting that Love would hit the winning run for the Eagles at the back of a match-winning 104 not out.
With scores deadlocked and a ball remaining, Love played the ball to cover and scampered through for a quick single, sparking celebrations in the dressing room.
“ e boys were pretty pumped about it,” Eagles player-coach Adam Yates told the Weekly.
“It was tight towards the end so it was great to get over the line and beat a local side.
“You get up for the teams who are nearby and always put a bit extra into it because you play them every season.”
is was an upset of the highest order. e Eagles had won only two games for the season and were blooding three raw 16-year-olds in the line-up.
Altona is riding high in the top six and considered a premiership chance.
Love’s stellar performance proved the di erence on the second day.
“He’s obviously an experienced player. He just read the game well and when we needed a boundary he got one. He played sensibly,” Yates said.
A er a slight hiccup with Bradley Jones removed for a duck, the Eagles consolidated through Curtis Maguire (39) and captain Alex Hewet (21).
e pair put on 39 before Love went to work to compile his rst sub-district ton since the 2009-10 season.
Love couldn’t have steered the Eagles over the line without support from Tim McRae
(17) and Ryan Cox (12no). Cox kept cool even when the run rate required crept up over the run-a-ball mark.
“He was in at a critical time and was a steady head at the end,” Yates said.
e Eagles’ victory was undoubtedly set up on day one, when they braved
40-degree conditions to have the A’s all out for 217.
Hewet was an ironman with 5-50 o 19 overs in torturous heat.
“ e rst day was crucial in our victory,” Yates said.“Fielding in 40 degrees and to push on
and bowl them out was a good performance.“Alex led the way. Bowling 19 overs in that
temperature was a great e ort.”Yarraville will host Croydon in a two-dayer
at the Yarraville Oval, while Altona will aim to preserve its top six status when Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows visits. \

LYDIA, YOU’VE DONE US PROUDWinter Olympics
Lydia Lassila, you are our inspiration. You have done the western suburbs proud with your brave performances at the Sochi Olympics.
Lassila was the talk of co ee shops across the west on Saturday morning a er claiming a bronze medal in the ladies’ aerials.
e 32-year-old from Diggers Rest is more than a dual Olympic medallist, she is a ground breaker.
e former Footscray City Gymnastics Club member set a goal of becoming the rst woman to attempt an in-competition quad-twisting triple somersault.
e degree of di culty was out of this world, but Lassila was not going to die wondering.
“I was always going to go into these Olympics with that approach, all or nothing,” she told Channel Ten a er the super nal.
“I’m the rst woman to do the full-double-full-full. I set out to do this trick 15 years ago when I saw my rst world cup at Mt Buller in Australia and that was in 1999.
“I saw the guys doing these amazing triples and I said one day I’m going to do it. Fi een years later, I did it, and I’m super happy.
“I’ve reached my potential. It would be great to always do more, but that was a maximum e ort from me today and I couldn’t have done any better.”
Lassila entered the super nal with the second best score of the quali ers.
e surprise packet of the nal was Belarusian veteran Alla Tsuper, who had the smoothest landing on the back of a back-full-full-full jump and scored 98.01 to claim gold.
China’s Li Nina attempted a back double-full double-full, a di cult jump and botched the landing, scoring just 46.02.
Four years ago, Lassila won gold at the Vancouver Olympics. She had gold on her mind at the top of the hill in this nal leap at Sochi.
Under her uoro yellow glasses she had a steely look, nothing indicating the nerves of a
woman about to go where no other had gone before. She ticked all the technical boxes but dri ed slightly in the air and it played havoc with her landing.
“ ere’s nothing Lydia could have done more to save that jump,” Olympic gold medallist and TV commentator Alisa Camplin said.
e judges gave Lassila 72.12 – a guaranteed podium nish.
“I’m very happy with my performance,”
she said. “It would’ve been great to land that jump, but I was stretching for my life and I just couldn’t get there.
Whether Lassila’s medal was silver or bronze depended on the nal competitor, China’s Xu Mengtao.
Xu approached her back-lay double-full-full more cautiously and lost momentum and a gold medal in the process. But she did enough to pip Lassila for silver with a score of 83.50. \

altona clutch at slim finals chance
Bowls
Altona will go into the nal round of the Bowls Victoria metro premier division on a wing and a prayer.
e A’s have only a faint heartbeat and will atline if even the most intricate details fail to go in their favour on Saturday.
ey need to beat Mentone in the 18th and last round of the season and have to do so with a clean sweep of the rinks.
Nothing less than 18-0 is likely to su ce if the A’s are to jump from sixth into the top four.
If they can achieve that, then things get complicated, with fourth-placed Melbourne meeting h-placed Essendon.
According to the calculations of A’s skip Brett Dodd, the most favourable outcome for his side would be a 14-4 win by Essendon.
But at least there’s a glimmer of hope.“We’ve probably le it a bit late, but we
can still make it, believe it or not,” Dodd said.
“If Essendon win 14-4 and we win 18-0, we’re in.
“You’re relying on other results and it’s not what you want.
“We’re de nitely capable of getting all 18 points ... all we can do is get the 18 and see what happens.”
 e A’s’ lifeline came a er Saturday’s 106-64 mauling of Burwood District.
Brenton Coad (38-14), Brett Foley (26-13) and Matthew Rennex (26-20) recorded solid wins.
David Zitter lost by a shot on the last agonising end.
It was one of the rare times this season that the A’s maintained a high standard from start to nish.
“We’re usually playing good for halves in games and then having at spots,” Dodd said. “It’s hard to put your nger on why. e talent is there for sure.” \ LJ
rams relish role of deciding march madness line-upsBaseball
Newport Rams are relishing the role of party poopers in Baseball Victoria summer league division 1.
Despite being one of the hottest teams in the past month, the Rams will not feature in nals in their promotion season, but are hell-bent on having a say over which of their rivals will feature in the March madness
e Rams extended their unbeaten run to ve games by throwing a spanner in the works of Cheltenham’s nals aspirations at KC White Reserve on Saturday.
Rams assistant coach Gavin Young reiterated that his side was one of the tightest in the top division.
“I sound like a broken record at the moment, but it has been a very good team performance over the past few weeks and today was another one of those days,” he said.
“Everyone is chipping in. It’s the old cliche that a champion team will beat a team of champions.”
Seven of the Rams’ nine players picked up hits in the 6-3 win.
Dean Anglin led the way again, equalling
his season-best three hits with two RBIs. Anglin has had a hit in 10 of his past 11 games, including nine in his past ve.
Matthew Lawman picked up three RBIs.
“ ere was some good team hitting by everyone involved,” Young said. “We capitalised on our opportunities.”
e Rams’ pitching and defence was again outstanding. ey have not
conceded more than four runs in a single game since the turn of the new year.
Travis Bass is a major reason why the Rams
are at their stingiest best. e US import pitched six solid innings to give up four hits and four walks and le the game with the lead at 3-2.
e Rams turned to reliever Jeremy Young and he maintained the high standards that saw him pick up the win in a mid-week game against Geelong.
“He is somebody who is developing really well in a closing role for us this year,” Young said. “He’s a real gamer and just goes up there and gives it everything he’s got .”
e Rams will face Melbourne on the road in the last game of the season on Saturday. \ LJ
