Our programs and supports in 2014: A Snapshot Operation Santa, our support to adults who have a diagnosed mental health condition almost doubled in the number served through three events: A Spring Picnic, Thanksgiving Meal and our Christmas tradi-tion, Operation Santa. This year's Operation Santa event was our most positive in many years. Our volunteers, Board Members and em-ployees of Aiken Electric Cooperative were phenomenal! Laughter, smiles, wonderful food and special gifts, so important to maintaining positive mental health! Welcome Baby, our program designed to support parents of new-borns was streamlined to provide a clear and concise message: Un-derstanding Postpartum Emotions and providing critical information and access to local resources. Essentially, we made Welcome Baby more "user friendly" for mothers by simplifying our approach. We con-tinue to provide diapers and formula for families in need at our office, either through referrals from partner agencies or on a walk-in basis. Education and Advocacy, advocacy for individuals and families expe-riencing mental health conditions; training and support in regards to suicide bereavement and suicide prevention, continues to explore and take advantage of any opportunity to be the "go to" agency for our community. In 2014, we partnered with The Aiken Center to form the Coalition for Suicide Prevention of Aiken County and worked closely with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to hold a suc-cessful Out of the Darkness Walk. Our goal through Education and Advocacy is to remove the stigma associated with mental health condi-tions and to remain committed to preventing suicide deaths. Nurture Home has facilitated many successes for families who enter our shelter homeless, unemployed and without income or transporta-tion. One example is a former resident, a victim of domestic violence, who achieved a technical degree while in Nurture Home. This former resident is now employed full-time, has insurance coverage for herself and her daughter, as well as transportation. We are fortunate to have this former resident as a member of our Board of Directors. A second especially moving story is of a "non-traditional" resident. A single wom-an in her forties, unemployed and homeless. She entered Nurture Home to get back on her feet. But, then though an opportunity to part-ner with The Best Chance Network of the American Cancer Society, she and the other residents of Nurture Home were able to have their first mammograms. For this one resident in particular, the results were shocking and resulted in a double mastectomy within a week. Her pro-cedure was successful and with chemotherapy almost complete she will be successfully transitioning from Nurture Home later this month. We continue to see proof that homelessness can happen to anyone. There truly is no stereotypical "face of homelessness".
