Students will be required to add, multiply, and divide in order to do their homework, be involved in class discussion, and complete assignments. Any handheld calculator, with the exclusion of cell phones, can be used. Please check Blackboard each week for updated materials, assignments, and activities. Announcements related to the course are also posted on Blackboard.

CELLPHONES As a courtesy to others in the classroom, during class time, students and instructor will turn off cell phone ringers, refrain from answering calls and text messaging. Students caught text messaging or talking on their cell phones once class has started will either have their phones confiscated or be asked to leave.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS This is a gamified course. Gamified courses create an inquiry based, complex problem, learning environment that helps students understand how they are doing, what they need to work on, and where to go next. Gamified courses have an overarching narrative where students apply their knowledge. Students complete daily challenges and earn the right to compete in side missions. Students start with zero experience and have to level up. Student level and experience points (XP) determine the course grade.

1) Outside of Class Participation

Students are expected to read from the textbook or watch any relevant videos to discover the course material.

Students are expected to complete worksheets to help summarize the important information from the readings or videos (Curation). Completion of such worksheets and uploading to Blackboard provides students with experience points (XP).

2) Attendance and Class Participation

Students are expected to participate in class discussions and activities throughout the course. Participation in class activities earns XP.

Page 5: MGMT 420 Operations Management Course Outline · MGMT 420 – Course Outline Red Deer College Page 2 of 13 LSCM 3403 Operations Management CO-LISTING WITH MOUNT ROYAL UNIVERSITY (MRU)

Time will be given in class for students to work together on case studies and critical thinking exercises. Time will also be given in class for students to share their approaches to solving problems and to reflect on their approach given how other students approached a problem. Students who are absent do not have the benefit of brainstorming with their colleagues. Therefore, regular attendance is highly recommended. If a student will be absent, he or she needs to contact the instructor before the missed class.

Students are expected to treat each other and the instructor with respect. This includes listening when others speak, waiting your turn to speak, and not making any derogatory comments toward other students or the instructor. The classroom should be an environment where everyone feels free to voice his or her ideas regarding the subject matter.

In order to participate, a student must be prepared for class. It is important to check Blackboard frequently for updates. Please read from the textbook or watch any relevant videos prior to class and bring completed worksheets to class.

Students are expected to attend 2 field trips during the semester. Students will complete short summaries of their learning from the field trips for XP.

3) Test Your Understanding (Assignments and Quizzes)

Students are expected to practice the course material and illustrate their knowledge by completing quizzes and assignments.

Students are encouraged to use the worksheets and tables they created to help them with the assignments and quizzes. Assignments and quizzes are graded. Experience points (XP) are gained based on grade.

4) Activities and Challenges

Individual and group activities will help students understand the overarching narrative and aid in the application of course knowledge to the narrative.

Students are expected to apply their knowledge to the overarching narrative for the course. Experience points (XP) are gained based on grade.

The most creative and insightful application of theory earns coins. Top earners of coins are eligible for prizes.

5) Side Missions

Students can choose to complete side missions for additional experience points (XP) or coins.

6) General

The information in this course is cumulative; therefore it is imperative that students obtain help as soon as they recognize they are having difficulty. Students who are encountering difficulty with the course are urged to contact the instructor at once.

Students should ensure that they are familiar with Red Deer College’s Student and Academic Standard Practices and Policies as well as the key dates in the Academic Schedule.

PLEASE NOTE: Students are not expected to do all assessments. Each worksheet, assignment, activity, challenge, etc. is worth a different number of points. Gamification is about choice. In a video game there are many different paths to win the game. In a gamified course, students choose which assessments to complete and which challenges to accept.

GRADING SYSTEM Final grades in the course will be assigned based on the Alberta Education Grade Comparison letter grading system as described in the Red Deer College Calendar. Students’ grades are determined according to the experience points noted under Assessment of Student Performance.

ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE Grades are determined as follows:

XP

GPA XP

GPA

850 - 900 A+ 4.0 550 - 599 C+ 2.3

800 - 849 A 4.0 500 - 549 C 2.0

750 - 799 A- 3.7 450 - 499 C- 1.7

700 - 749 B+ 3.3 400 - 449 D+ 1.3

650 - 699 B 3.0 300 - 400 D 1.0

600 - 649 B- 2.7 < 300 F 0

Students must attempt a minimum of 7 out of 12 levels to pass the course. PLEASE NOTE: Higher levels utilize work from lower levels. Therefore, it is recommended that students at least partially attempt all levels. Feedback regarding grades is available through Blackboard. Since the course is gamified, students will have a weekly updated leaderboard to track their progress compared to their colleagues. Students will choose their own gamer names at the beginning of the semester to maintain anonymity. Students are encouraged to discuss their progress and concerns with the instructor during office hours or by appointment. Students should make an appointment with the instructor to discuss their progress and concerns, especially if the cumulative total at the Midterm Feedback Date (March 8th) is below 150 XP.

RECORDS MANAGEMENT

Red Deer College requires its instructors to keep final exams for one year following the completion of the exam. All paper assignments will be returned to the students.

ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT Academic misconduct in all its forms is a serious offence. Academic misconduct is the giving, taking, or presenting of information or material that unethically or dishonestly aids oneself or another on any work which, under normal circumstances, is to be considered in the determination of a grade or the compilation of academic requirements or the enhancement of that student’s record or academic career. The two key areas of academic misconduct are plagiarism and cheating. Please read the definitions that follow. Plagiarism: The use or close imitation of language, paintings, films, prototypes and ideas of another author and representation of them as one's own original work. The most common forms of plagiarism are copying or paraphrasing another author’s work without proper acknowledgement, using the ideas or lines of reasoning of another author’s work without proper acknowledgement, submitting work to which someone else has made substantial improvements to the content, and submitting the same work for multiple courses without approval. Plagiarism can be judged to have occurred if the instructor has both the submitted material and original source that was copied, or if the student is unable to explain the terminology or ideas of a submission. Cheating: Any attempt to give or obtain unsanctioned assistance in a formal academic exercise (e.g., examination). Some examples of cheating are unauthorized cheat sheets in a test or exams, the unauthorized use of electronic devices during an exam, and copying from an adjacent student. See:

Appeals: Formal Policy

Appeals: Informal Resolution Policy

Student Misconduct: Academic and Non-Academic Policy
