American painter GrANT wOOD’s oil on board work from 1930 american gothic is one of the most well known paintings of American life. DAvID DArE PArKEr’s portrait of romanian dairy farmers (pictured, right) is yet another reference to this famous painting.

MGA has put together a visual pinboard of the varied re-makes, appropriations and references to this artwork for classroom use. From fashion shoots to lego characters, television shows to engagement photos and even zombies there are many examples available for a simple introduction to appropriation in popular culture.

Bruce postle: iMAGe MAker3 MAY–30 JUNE 2013

Bruce Postle, one of Australia’s most celebrated photojournalists, has taken thousands of images in over half a century of photojournalism. In 27 years working with The Age, Postle captured some of the most iconic images of our times.

This special exhibition presents photographs from a master storyteller. Every photograph in the exhibition tells a vivid story and Bruce has captioned them to disclose the humorous, profound and moving moments behind their making.

MGA Director Shaune Lakin states: ‘Bruce Postle is truly one of Australia’s great photojournalists. Before the days of citizen journalism and social media, we relied on people like Bruce to put a picture to the events of the day. Across five decades, Bruce’s photographs helped victorians see the events of the world as they unfolded.’

3 MAY–30 JUNE 2013

The face-painted portrait has become a prominent feature of contemporary Australian photography. In photographs by Eric BrIDGEMAN, Bindi COLE, ray COOK, Sandy EDwArDS, Siri HAYES, Owen LEONG, Darren SYLvESTEr, Nat THOMAS & Concettina INSErrA, Christian THOMPSON and Justene wILLIAMS, people conceal and reveal themselves with face paint. In this survey of often very moving contemporary portraits, photography and identity are both cast as provisional and uncertain.

An education kit for teachers will be available for this exhibition.

Available as Teacher Professional Development or Student workshops

In this practical and hands-on workshop we will cover:• simple, low-cost lighting options for indoor photography• improvised reflectors and diffusers (creation and use)• getting that perfect white background for portraits and still-life objects• importance of white balance settings and colour temperatures

Don’t forget to bring your own cameras to take some photographic ‘notes’ for later. Ideally this workshop would be run as part of a half-day or minimum 2.5 hour visit to the gallery to allow time for all participants to take their own images with the different lighting setups and to view the exhibition.

This is a NEW program for 2013, please use the booking form to enquire about this workshop for your student visit at least two weeks prior to your preferred visit date.

STArTING POINTS• identity/culture/façade/disguise• studio lighting• studio portraiture• compare and contrast: staged portraiture versus reportage portraiture • scale and presentation techniques• costuming and make up• storytelling with multiple images (multiple works from a series on display)• photographs as creative writing prompts [see page 8]• photography and empathy

Bowness photography prize 2013

3 OCTOBEr–3 NOvEMBEr 2013

Now in its eighth year, the WILLIAM & WINIfRED BoWNESS PHOTOGrAPHY PrIzE celebrates the best of contemporary Australian photography.

Competition entries open in May of the same year, with three judges selecting the finalists for exhibition in October. Once the finalists works are delivered and hung for the exhibition, the judges return to select the overall winner and three honourable mentions.

STArTING POINT ACTIvITIES:

• Talking about photography for beginners: Give students time to view the exhibition and select their winning (or alternatively their most hated) work, they then explain their choice to the rest of the class, encouraging them to think beyond the ‘I just like it’ initial response

• Three-step analysis: Involving parts of the formal, Personal & Cultural frameworks. Break into smaller groups of students to deconstruct an image aloud for the larger group (or individually in their workbooks) 1. Begin with the formal elements and possible photographic techniques, including scale and presentation2. Interpret and evaluate the success of the artist’s intention (artist statements are available on the wall next to the work)3. Conclude with their own (the viewer’s) interpretation and how their own background may be influencing their opinion
