Fiesta Filipina Call for Volunteers

FAGKC is now accepting applications for Education Scholarships.

Three programs are avail-able to eligible students: Col-lege Education Scholarship Program, Secondary Education Scholarship Program, and Per-forming Arts Education Schol-arship Program. The winner of each program will win a scholarship in the amount of $200, $100, or $200 respec-tively.

To be eligible, the student must have at least a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale and be the child of a paid member of the FAGKC for two consecutive years. The selection criteria will be based on merit in five, equally weighted categories:

• Class rank and GPA • Standardized test scores • Extracurricular activities and

community service • Awards, honors and citations • 250-word essay

After all the application ma-

terials have been reviewed by a panel coordinated by the FAGKC Scholarship Commit-tee, the top candidates will be invited to an interview with the Scholarship Committee. In August, the Committee will announce the winners at the General Meeting of the FAGKC.

25th Fiesta of Sto. Nino

The Fiesta is scheduled to be held on May 8, 2004, at 4:00 P.M. at the Filipino Cultural Center. If you are planning to attend, please bring your own Sto. Nino for the procession and blessings. Youth ages 3-19 years should bring flowers for the offering and wear semi-formal attire. Representatives from the different areas in Greater Kansas City will also present flower offerings. The meal is potluck with Filipino dishes (dinuguan, fried chicken, lechon, minudo, pan-cit, sweet sour at marami pa!)

Please be on the watch for Movie Nights at the Filipino Cultural Center utilizing our brand new big screen TV. Parents Day will be held May 15th at the Filipino Cultural Center. The Sen-ior Council of the FAGKC sponsors this event which begins at 6 P.M. Par-

ents Day is an opportunity for children to honor their parents and grandparents. One way to honor parents and grandparents is to purchase an ad in the souvenir program: $40 for full page 5 1/2” x 8 1/2” and $20 for half page 5 1/2” x 4 1/4”. Tickets for the catered din-ner are $25 for each adult and $12 for children under the age of 12. Hawaiian costume is the recommended party attire.

President Filipinas Francisco announced that seniors and friends will perform surprise num-bers. She added that there will be a raffle drawing for a brand new 27” RCA television worth $200. Purchase raffle tickets in advance for $5.00 per pair of tickets or at the door for $6.00 per pair of tickets. Tickets will only be sold in pairs. If you can’t attend Parents Day, you can still purchase raffle tickets since you need not be present to win.

Reports the Philippine Daily Inquirer News Service in an article dated April 6, 2004:

“An award-winning Filipino-American woman photographer who had joined journalists em-bedded with US military forces in Iraq last year, won yet an-other accolade on Monday-the highly coveted Pulitzer Prize for photography, sharing the honor with a colleague from the Dallas Morning News.

“Cheryl Diaz Meyer, who was born and raised in Legaspi, Al-bay, before her family migrated to the United States in 1981…[is] the fourth ethnic Filipino to win

Dr. Lillian Pardo has been elected President of the Zonta Club of KCMO II for a two-year term starting July 1, 2004. Zonta International is a world-wide service organization of executives in business and the professions working to ad-vance the status of women. She will be a delegate to the Zonta International convention to be held in New York City in July of this year.

One of the club’s local pro-jects is to support Sheffield Place, a transitional living pro-gram for homeless mothers and their children.

In the past three years the Zonta Club of KCMO II has held their fund-raising activi-ties at the Filipino Cultural Center with international themes featuring the countries of the Philippines, Turkey and India.

Below: The Medical Missions team 2004 of the Philippine Medical Society of Greater Kansas City. In January 2004, the Medical Missions team traveled to San Marcelino in Zambales. During the course of their stay, the team saw almost 1600 patients and delivered 35,700 pounds of equip-ment and supplies. Marahil ay nakatala pa sa ating mga isi-pan ang mga bagay na natutuhan natin sa ating mga magulang o sa mga guro ng maba-bang paaralan. Ang mga kultura na inihati nila sa ating musmos na mga isip. Siyempre ang babanggitin ko dito ay dalawa lamang, na sa aking palagay ay parehong simple at madaling gawin at madali ding ituro sa ating mga kasalukuyang mga kabataan.

Ang una ay ang paggamit ng “po” at “opo”. Ito ay isang bagay na nagsasaad ng paggalang sa ating kinakausap o mga kina-kausap. Ewan ko pero hindi ko alam kung sino ang nag uso ng “ho” at “oho”. Sa paki-wari ko ay ginagamit ang huling mga panitik kapag ang kausap ay mga hindi kamagana-kan o sa taong nuon lamang nakilala. Subalit magkagayon man, ito ay nagsasaad pa rin ng paggalang. Kay tamis pakinggan kung ating naririnig ang bata na sumasagot sa nakata-tanda sa kanya na ginagamit ang “po” at “opo”.

Ang sumunod naman ay ang “pagmamano”. Ito ay isang sagisag ng ating paggalang sa isang tao. Maaaring ito ay ating mga magulang, tio o tiyahin, mga ni-nong o ninang, o ‘di kaya naman ay sa mas nakakatanda sa atin. Ang kagandahan nito ay nabibigyan tayo ng kapalit na bendisyon. Bagama’t sa ngayon ay medyo nagiging in-gles na ang naririnig natin, gaya ng sinasabi ng iba na “O bless na”. Nanduduon pa rin ang kahulugan nito ang paggalang at pag-bibigay ng bendisyon. Ang iba naman ay iniuuso ang halik at ayaw magpamano. Dahil daw sila ay tumatanda. Pakiusap po, huwag nating kalimutan ang isinasaad nito. Dahil talagang kay ganda ng ating kultura, kahit saan mo pa dalhin ay talagang hahanga ka.

Meeting called to order at 7:50 PM; agenda was approved. The minutes of the March meeting was approved. President’s Report: Pres. Cito Jalbuena welcomed first time attendees & new KC residents Cyril and Dolly Claro, children Carlo, Carol & Camille! He then reported on a variety of things, many of which will be covered under the different committee reports. He thanked the following: 1) John & Nita May for donating an electronic organ; 2) Cito Jalbuena & Paul delos Santos for our new locking mailbox; 3) Dr. Tony Racela & Alcy Malkmus for the grant request to Hallmark thru Keith Kennedy. Treasurer’s Report: (Please see Paul delos Santos’ complete report elsewhere in this issue). Tambuli: Jackie Nugent again thanked everyone who has been helping with the newsletter. Due to printer commitments for yearbook publication, Jackie said we need to have this month’s Tambuli ready for printing earlier than usual. 4. Sinag-Tala Performing Arts Director: No official report but we are still GO on the concert in Des Moines, Iowa sometime in the fall. 5. Sinag-Tala Dance Company: Proposal to the Ethnic Commission to be the featured entertainment on Saturday evening of the Ethnic Festival is being completed; prepara-tions ongoing for both IA & KC Fall concerts. 6. Sampaguita Choir: Ping Bayani reported that rehearsals continue for the Choir’s performances at St. Louis World’s Fair Centennial Celebration in June. Information Packet from organizing committee should be arriving soon. Choir will sing at: Lions Club Fundraiser, Sorio wedding, Parents’ Day Celebration & Fall Concerts. Filipino Cultural Center Director: Ping Bayani reported increased usage of both Cultural Center & Philippine House; rental fees are helping generate funds, e.g. $800 for March, $1,000 for April; May bookings are filling up fast! Refurbishing of the Philippine House’s main floor & basement clean-up is still on for the spring/summer months. Bigger scale renovation is on hold until we can raise $5,000. As always, do-nors/volunteers are always needed. Ping finally announced & publicly thanked the group that donated the $2,000 for the FCC’s new big screen TV & DVD player – it’s the Ethnic Financier Group composed of Adele Agpoon, Al & Angie Agustin, Lilia Bautista, Carmen Chico, Paul & Mirla delos Santos, Ricardo & Pie Rivera, Michael & Adela Tan,

Ted & marietta Tungol and Ambet & Emy Yabut. Standing Committees’ Reports: 1. By-Laws: Carmen Chico reported progress in amending/updating some items to make them more in tune with current processes. Though not completely finished, they are ready to present some recommendations to the Board on April 24, after which said recommendations will be presented to the general membership in succeeding general meetings. 2. FYO: The Filipino Youth Organization is collaborating w/ the Debutantes for this year’s Easter Picnic. They’re also heading the planned Pinoy Breakfast event & possi-bly a baking contest & bake sale! 3. Finance: Mirla delos Santos reported that there is no hold on our investment account with Brotherhood Bank. 4. Hospitality: Tacing Jalbuena sent get-well cards to a FAGKC member & to a friend of the Association; also visited them at the hospital. She congratulated all birthday & wedding anniversary celebrants & thanked all those who brought food, drinks & raffle prizes for the evening. Finally, Committee members will assist at the Easter Picnic. 5. Membership: Lilia Bautista reported that new memberships for the month include 1 family & 12 individual memberships, for a total of 157 paid memberships, just 43 short of our target 200 memberships for 2004, representing a 13% increase, compared to the

‘normal’ 3% increase the last 10 years! Total dues is $6,055. 6. Scholarship: Cory Sorio reported that there will be a Talent Show at the Easter Picnic put together by her committee. She also an-nounced the call for honor roll students! Give her the names of those smart kids! Lastly, she stated the Scholarship Guidelines will be in the next Tambuli. 7. Senior Council: Fely Francisco announced May 15 is Parents’ Night at the FCC. Tickets are $25; need ads for the Souvenir Pro-gram! 8. Ways and Means: Amy Mesina reported various fundraisers – trash bags, ballroom dancing, raffles at FAGKC meetings, re-sale of

designer goods, concessions at Royals Stadium & Arrowhead Stadium. First group of volunteers attended the training session at the Truman Sports Complex: Paul & Mirla delos Santos, Amy Mesina, Angie Chico-Agustin, Lisa Hopkins, Ilene Kagahastian, Cito & Tacing Jalbuena. The Committee always welcomes fresh ideas & new volunteers. Special Committees’ Reports: Building and Grounds: Pres. Cito reported that work began on Saturday, March 20 to complete the fencing of the northeast portion of our property. Thanks to the following who helped clear the area and dug holes: Leader Joel & Cheryl Gaela, Mike & Adela Tan, Rich, Gemma, Richie & Alexis Snyder, Megan & Kevin Carey, Paulo Mamuric, Carmen & Gerard Jalbuena, Merlita & Erika Sison, Jun Puno, Ping Bayani, Roland Dumuk and Cito & Tacing Jalbuena. Thanks also to those who brought food and drinks for the group. Another Saturday will be needed to complete the project. Fiesta Filipina: Set for June 19 & 20. Theme: “Fiesta Filipina Welcomes the World!” We are seeking entertainment from non-Filipino community. Tell us if you know of any groups or individuals who might be interested! We’re also renting out booths/tents at the Fiesta for private businesses, sales, displays, etc. 3. September Affair: Debutantes are working on the Easter Picnic as part of their community service. 4. Volunteer Committee: No report bu just wanted to make sure the Committee is no longer categorized as an Ad-Hoc Committee. Ad-Hoc Committees: No reports. Old Business: None. New Business:

1. We have been contacted by Christine Jagolino, a Filipina producer at HGTV regarding a new program called “Crafting Coast to Coast”. They will feature various artists and crafters with their works, starting with a tour of 9 cities, including Kansas City! If you are interested or know of anyone who might be, please call the Cultural Center at (913) 381-1601 and we will put you in touch.

2. John Fread invited everyone to the meeting of the John Knox Village Foreign Affairs Association to be held at the Lakeside Grill on April 13 at noon. Their topic is the Philippines!
