Tadaharu YoshimuraVice Principal of Japanese Department

As director of the Japanese department, my responsibilities include oversight of the Japanese curriculum and most of the kindergarten’s general education programs. Our staff and teachers work diligently to maintain excellence in all of our programs, continually studying and applying the most effective techniques in child education. We are committed to discovering and developing every child’s potential, so I welcome all comments and questions from parents.

Jonathan TakenamiVice Principal of General Affairs

It is my privilege to oversee the business and administrative functions of MeySen, including accounting, office management, facilities, buses, and even details like making sure our animals get fed. By maintaining standards of excellence throughout our business operations, I hope to help each family’s relationship with MeySen be as relevant and rewarding as possible.

Nathan BromanVice Principal of English Department

Excellent language education contributes immeasurably to a child’s future. MeySen’s English program is designed to help every student achieve the greatest possible success in language and in life: physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. It is my honor to lead the English programs at MeySen, and I earnestly encourage parent participation.

John Broman Chairman of the Board of Regents

Greetings

Daniel Fanger Principal

Our schools have some special characteristics: beautiful natural environments; live animals—big and small—that children can learn about and enjoy; a proprietary English education program tailored to the way that children learn language; and, above all, our reliance on Biblical principles to guide all of our endeavors. The Bible teaches us to “train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6 ESV). Of all that we hope to teach the children, we consider honesty, obedience, and diligence as most important. As well, in keeping with our school motto, “Mercy and Truth,” we want the children to learn compassion toward others and truthfulness before God. With God’s help and the support of parents, our entire staff will work to help our students begin their life’s journey with these principles as their foundation.

But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell? It cannot be bought with the finest gold, nor can its price be weighed out in silver. God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells, And he said to man, “The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.”

(taken from Job 28, NIV)

All of us, in our daily lives, must continuously distinguish good from evil. I fear God and I believe in his son, Jesus Christ, and the truths he revealed to mankind. Here at MeySen Academy, as we work together to educate these children, our aim is that all of our decisions will be based upon the righteous commands of God as they are written in the Bible.

Typically, a child’s brain develops and “wires” itself based on the child’s personal experiences. This is particularly true for infants and young children, whose neural programming is occurring at a very rapid rate. This is a perfect time to introduce children to social interaction and relationships. The main focus of K3 is to teach children the joy of doing things together, while giving them a basic understanding of everyday life.

In addition, English language is slowly introduced—starting with 10 minutes a day and increasing to 20 minutes a day—allowing the children to familiarize themselves with the language naturally, as they did when learning their first language.K3 also uses songs, educational and play activities, and picture books to expose the students to Japanese letters and Kanji, turning each day into a fun and rewarding time.

Kindergarten for 5-year-olds

K5In K5, students are exposed to a broader scope of life lessons as well as exposure to new educational experiences. Through English study, fun and educational class activities, special songs, and Kanji picture book lessons, students enjoy daily experiences that enhance cognitive development and grow their love of singing, reading, and

physical activity. Also, throughout the K5 school year, MeySen teaches students appropriate ways to assert their own ideas while remaining sensitive to the feelings and ideas of others. This formal development in collaboration builds individual confidence as well as valuable lasting relationships that carry into students’ lives after MeySen.

To nurture bilingual skills, forty minutes of each school day are devoted to Japanese study. The reinforcement of language proficiency in both Japanese and English results from exposure to Japanese letters and Kanji in picture books and to English songs and activities in MeySen’s English curriculum.

Premier School Kindergarten is conducted almost entirely in English.By being immersed in an entirely English environment, students naturally process and develop an “English realm” within their brains, thereby acquiring the ability to think in English and speak in English naturally—without having to mentally translate expressions into their first language to understand what they are saying in the language they are learning.

Premier School G1ーG6

At Premier School, the academic goal is to create fully bilingual students by the end of the committed 8 years of study. According to research, in order to learn English as proficiently as most native English speakers, second language learners would need to:

• begin as a toddler • study at least two hours a day • continue studying until at least age 12

By attending immersion classes 4~6 days a week, students have a much better head start to naturally construct an “English realm” brain space by the time they graduate from the 6th Grade. Thisbrain realm development will be quickened when students participate in a homestay in Seattle, Washington, USA, in the 4th Grade. By attending an American school, the MeySen students have the opportunity to refine and practice their English skills.

After graduating from MeySen Kindergarten, students at Maruyama and Takamori can enroll in the Friends Club program.Friends Club has three purposes: (1) To improve English, (2) To nurture friendships, and (3) To encourage intercultural awareness.

Friends Club (G1-G6)Educators know that EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students acquire a stronger understanding of English when exposed to a variety of events and interactions with their peers. Friends Club creates those opportunities. Additionally, in the classroom, learning is primarily

achieved through the GrapeSEED curriculum, a cutting edge curriculum that was originally developed specifically for MeySen. Friends Club allows MeySen students to continue to grow in language skills and maintain the motto: “Think in English. Communicate in English.”

A World Without Borders

Study Abroad in America or AustraliaMeySen offers a scholarship program to allow senior high school graduates of Friends Club to study abroad. Candidates may choose the one-year US Course or the four-week Australia Summer Course. Each participating student will polish English skills while growing in confidence, self-reliance, perseverance, acceptance of responsibility, and relational courtesies.

The US TripA three-week study trip is available to qualified FC and PS graduates in G7, their first year of junior high school. Through a week-long camp and a homestay with an American family, students are able to build long-lasting relationships with new friends. The US Trip is the perfect opportunity for students to apply the English they have learned at MeySen.

The Europe TripStudents in G11, their second year of high school, qualify for the 19-day Europe Trip. They will experience home life and school life in the UK and Germany, and briefly visit France.MeySen provides opportunities for students to grow culturally and spiritually

through global programs that help them understand their individual roles as members of the international community.
