INDEPENDENCE DAY PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America,

and to the Republic for which it stands. One nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.

INVOCATION Mt 28:19

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: E Amen.

OPENING SENTENCES from Psalm 33 People: Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, People: the people whom He has chosen as His heritage! Pastor: The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart to all

generations. People: Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear Him, on those who

hope in His steadfast love. Pastor: Let Your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, People: even as we hope in You.

THE CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: Almighty God, heavenly Father, People: Almighty God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean,

undeserving of Your mercy. We admit that we have sinned against You in countless ways. We have left undone those things we ought to have done; we have done those things we ought not to have done. We have not always been the citizens of our blessed nation we could be, taking for granted the gift of freedom that is ours. We sincerely repent of our sins and humbly ask Your grace and forgiveness in Jesus Christ. By the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, lead us to change what is sinful in our lives that each day we grow in righteousness and godly living to the glory of Your holy name.

Pastor: The burdens that are so heavy for you are light for the Lord. As you have now confessed your sins, it is my privilege and joy to announce to you that Jesus has taken away your burdens by His death and resurrection. As a called and ordained servant of the Word, forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: E Amen.

THE INTROIT Psalm 91:1–2, 9–10 Pastor/Choir: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of

the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in

Page 4: PENTECOST - historictrinity.orgPENTECOST JULY 5, 2020 We are a traditional Cathedral Ministry in downtown Detroit, serving the metropolitan area while providing an open and caring

whom I trust.” Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge—no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.

THE GLORIA PATRI

THE KYRIE Mt 9:27, 15:22

E Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.

THE SALUTATION 2 Tim 4:22

Pastor: The Lord be with you. People:

PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: Lord of time and God of history, we ask You to keep our nation and its

leaders under Your care. It is by Your grace and blessing alone that we can know peace and freedom. Direct and lead us to live justly with our neighbors, peaceably in our communities, and joyfully in our land, seeking the common good. This we ask through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord.

People: E Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING Zechariah 9:9–12 (The King shall speak peace to the nations.)

9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall speak peace to the nations; his rule shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double.

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE READING Romans 7:14–25a (Paul struggles with the sin within him.)

14For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin. 15For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 21So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. 22For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, 23but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. 24Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 11:25–30 (Jesus offers rest to all who come to Him.)

Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the eleventh chapter. People: 25 At that time Jesus declared, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; 26yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People:

THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
