Joe Kirby has been Editorial Page Editor of the Marietta Daily Journal since 1992 and has won the prestigious Freedom of Information Award and Public Service Award from the Associated Press (Georgia) and the Georgia Press Association numerous times, as well as winning awards for Best Columnist, Best Editorial, Best Editorial Pages and Best Feature from those groups. He is the Southeastern Region 2008 winner of the First Place "Green Eyeshade" Award for Editorial Writing from the Society of Professional Journalists. the MDJ. Prior to that, Kirby was a reporter/anchorman for radio stations in northeast Georgia, including CBS Affiliate WNGC in Athens. He has a B.A. from James Madison University in History and Communication Arts. He also was a 1973 graduate of T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va. ("Remember the Titans!"). He serves on the boards of the Marietta Museum of History, the Cobb Library Foundation, the Kennesaw Mountain Historical Association, and the Marietta Kiwanis Club. Kirby is a longtime Contributing Editor to Civil War News. In summer 2012 he helped lead 25 Cobb residents on a tour of the D-Day and Battle of the Bulge sites in Europe, and is planning a similar trip this fall to WWII sites in Italy. He is the author of "The Lockheed Plant," "The Bell Bomber Plant" and co-author with Damien A. Guarnieri of "Then & Now: Marietta" and "Then & Now: Marietta Revisited." President Bill Callaway presided over the meeting.

Reynold Jennings and Charles Lassiter greeted visiting Rotarians and guests.

Sabrina Watson conducted the invocation and led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance and Four-Way Test.

Dr. David Satcher selected the winning raffle ticket.

Norm Finley gave sunshine for Harvard’s basketball team which won its first March madness game in school history.

Past President Mike White gave sunshine for recent trips to visit family in Chicago, Palm Springs and San Diego. He also brought back a banner from the Rotary Club of Coronado.

Past President Sally Platt gave sunshine for the Indiana Hoosiers who are still alive in the NCAA basketball playoffs.

Past President Stewart Carlin gave sunshine for all the teams that destroyed his March Madness bracket picks.

President-Elect Nominee Bill White gave sunshine for his daughter Hannah. She played on her college (George Washington University) rugby team winning their division in their first tournament.

Roel Fung-A-Wing gave sunshine for a nurse who saved his granddaughter recently when she was choking.

K.C. was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Bethesda, Maryland. As a child he was always doing something athletic and competed in his first tennis tournament at age 9. He continued playing junior tournaments and was ranked as high as 10th in the state of Maryland. He played a little basketball, along with tennis, at Walt Whitman High School where he graduated in 1985. Next stop was the University of Maryland where K.C. graduated in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Finance. Before jumping into the workforce, K.C. traveled across the country visiting Atlanta, Phoenix and Los Angeles. After six weeks of travel and resources dwindling, the decision was made to test the job market down south in Atlanta. K.C. and four friends moved to Atlanta in 1990. Initially, bartending and waiting tables paid the bills, but it also introduced K.C. to his future wife, Lisa. Lisa grew up in Connecticut, moved with her family to Atlanta in 1983 and attended Crestwood High School. K.C. and Lisa were married in 1995.

After a few years of selling signs and graphics for a small company in Roswell, K.C. took an opportunity with State Farm Insurance in 1994. K.C. started as an underwriter before being promoted to an agency management position. After completing the State Farm agency training program K.C. was appointed as an agent in Smyrna, GA in 2000 where his office is still located today. K.C. has continued his education by earning his Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) designations. K.C. also completed the Certified Financial PlannerTM program in 2003. K.C. and Lisa reside in East Cobb with their two children Owen (14) and Lauren (11). K.C. enjoys keeping up with his kid’s activities and also playing tennis and golf. K.C. was sponsored by Bill Callaway and became a member of the Marietta Metro Rotary Club in 2000. He has served in many capacities on the Board of Directors including Director of Club Administration and Director of Community Service.
