Rotary membership dues for the 2017-18 year are now payable. Please contact Metro Treasurer Laura Kogut timely.

On behalf of the Membership Committee, Casey Buckman presented the committee’s monthly award to a Rotarian who has been proactive in inviting prospective members to our weekly meetings. Thanks to Sarah Read, Rose Hayden, Tim Sullivan, Joy Block and Barb Danuser for inviting local professionals to our meetings in June. Each Rotarian’s name was entered into a drawing for a free lunch. Congratulations to Tim for being today’s winner!

Rotary week at Wonderland Camp is July 23-29 this year. The camp is located at Lake of the Ozarks and provides a fun, educational camp experience for children, teenagers and adults who have disabilities. Pages 4-5 of this newsletter outline the planned week activities and notes items on their “wish list.” Please visit www.wonderlandcamp.org to learn more about this opportunity.

The Metro Fundraising Committee will meet following the regular meeting on July 26.

Meeting Location Change: Please note that on August 2, Metro Rotary will meet at Douglass High School (310 North Providence Road) for a tour of the renovated facility. RSVPs and orders for box lunches will be received at upcoming meetings.

The 4th annual Kick-off Cook-off will be held August 26 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center. More information is on page 6 of this newsletter.

Local Educational Farm Provides Opportunities Amy Dooley is the Director of Jefferson Farm and Garden. The Iowa native was hired by the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) in July, 2015. Before coming to MU, Amy served as the director of conservation education for the American National Fish and Wildlife Museum. Jefferson Farm and Garden is a 67-acre educational farm located east of Columbia on New Haven Road. It opened in 2006, and is part of the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. It serves as an outdoor classroom to students of all ages, and regularly hosts workshops, field trips and special events. Their mission is to “cultivate an interest in food, agriculture and the environment through educational programs, community events and demonstrations.” The farm has numerous opportunities that appeal to visitors. They have a seven-acre lake, a four-acre native tree grove, a four-acre sunflower field and a two-acre wildflower meadow. She also noted there are four productive bee hives on the farm, over 100 different varieties of trees and plants and a native butterfly house. The butterfly house is one of only two in the state, and free tours are available to visitors. The Butterfly Festival began July 1, and they hope to make it an annual event. They are also planning to have a special event during National Dairy Month next June. Amy noted special partners that have played a key role in the success of Jefferson Farm and Garden. Some mentioned include MU Extension, Columbia Public Schools, Missouri Farm Bureau, local gardeners and the Missouri Department of Conservation. Each entity has been instrumental in helping present quality programming and events to people of all ages. To learn more about the farm, or schedule a visit, please visit http://jefferson.cafnr.org.
