    Introduction:

    Road transport is the principal mode of transportin Ghana.

    15 percent of road users own their own cars.

    85 percent make use of public transport or travelby foot.

    There are four main ways of public transportation

    in Ghana, namely, the taxis, tro-tro , Commuterbuses, and railway transport.

    Tro-Tro: DangerousTransportation

    Tro-tro is any vehicle in Ghana that is bigger thana taxi and is used to transport peoplecommercially.

    Maintenance is not a primary concern for itsoperations.

    There are no regulations or safety standards in

    place to ensure that the vehicle is safe to carrypassengers

    Tto-tro accidents are the second largest percent of

    vehicle accidents in Ghana.

    Examples

    Exhaust pipes are often exposed to the inside cabsof the vehicles causing burns to daily riders.

    Exhaust systems are not adequate and allow fumes

    to come directly into the passenger compartmentof the vehicles.

    Seat belts are not available and the presence of

    working doors is a luxury. Brakes are rarely checked and the stopping powers

    of the vehicles are dismal

    It aims to meet the public interest.

    Operates an effective and affordable transportsystem in an economical sustainable way.

    Provides an efficient urban mass transportation

    system. It is reliable, efficient, safe and affordable yet

    economically sustainable.

    Funding The government of Ghana has 45% shares.

    The remaining 55% is owned by privatecompanies.

    The Rapid bus system.

    Rapid Transit System solves these problems onthese congested roads.

    System provides a fast connection between most

    congested points and a central hub every 15minutes.

    Separate bus lanes if added to existing

    infrastructure will reduce travel time to 5 minutes.

    The Urban Service

    The urban service connects central bus terminalswith city outskirts and villages.

    Most transport providers in Ghana wait at variousterminals till the seats are filled.

    Wait time is approximately 5 minutes at everyterminal with this system.

    Increases the frequency of all urban and ruralservices and optimizes customer satisfaction.

    School Children

    Provides free rides to school children. School children are allowed to board the

    buses for free only on school days.

    Special services (pick and drop) from and toschool in certain neighborhoods.

    However this service is not free.
