Fundamentals of Metallurgy• Appreciate how atomic and microstructural features influence the properties of metals

• Understand how processing is used to manipulate material properties

• Summarise the test methods used to quantify mechanical & corrosion properties of a metal

• Understand how the structural characteristics of a metal influence test performance

• Understand how major industrial metals are produced

• Distinguish between primary and secondary process steps

• Understand how material selection methods are used in practice

Carbon & Alloy Steel Metallurgy• Describe & understand the processing of a wide variety of steel products

• Understand and discuss the basic metallurgy of steels

• Recognise the correct applications for various steel products

• Understand the principle welding processes and how to avoid degradation of materials properties

Stainless Steel Metallurgy• Understand the metallurgy of stainless steels

• Familiarisation with stainless steel making and continuous casting

• Discuss the forming of stainless steels

• Understand corrosion and oxidation mechanisms

• Appreciate surface finishes available on stainless steels

• Appreciate stainless steel markets and practical applications

Non-Ferrous Alloys• Understand the metallurgy of Aluminium, Nickel, Titanium and Copper alloys

• Appreciate their unique physical, mechanical and chemical properties and the applications to which they are suited

• Learn how Aluminium, Nickel, Titanium and Copper alloys are produced and processed into engineering components

• Understand how non-ferrous alloys differ from steels

Metals Processing & Manufacturing Technologies• Describe BOS, EAF and continuous casting processes

• Explain the terms expendable-mould casting, permanent-mould casting, sand casting, shrinkage and directional solidification

• How do turning, milling and drilling operations differ?

• Describe the principles of arc, resistance and oxyfuel gas welding methods

• Understand the basic scientific principles of carburising, electroplating & hot dipping

Principles of Heat Treatment• Explain why heat treatment is required for steels, nickel, titanium and aluminium alloys

• Appreciate the influence of heat treatment on microstructure and hence on materials properties

• Compare and contrast the attributes and control characteristics of electrical resistance, induction, gas and fuel oil fired furnaces

• Specify physical test procedures and explain their relevance in a formal quality control environment

Testing Techniques• Appreciate the procedures used to determine tensile, hardness, toughness, fatigue and creep properties of metals

• Understand how material properties are derived from the test results

• Learn how material properties are used to support product design, quality and performance

• Review a range of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques for detecting surface and sub-surface defects - optical, dye penetration, magnetic particle, eddy currents, ultrasonics and radiography

• Practical examples of industrial application of NDT techniques

Quality & Quality Control• Explain the difference between quality directives, codes and standards

• Describe and apply the principles of ISO 9000 series and 6 sigma quality systems

• Understand quality control systems, including sampling, errors, units and precision

• Familiarise with Pareto charts histograms, control charts and other Quality Tools.

Combating Metallic Corrosion• Appreciate the scientific principles of corrosion

• The role of metallography in understanding corrosion

• Awareness of the prevention of corrosion – galvanising, coatings, cathodic & anodic protection, design & environmental modifications

• Knowledge of corrosion resisting metals & alloys

• Awareness of corrosion problems in construction, automotive, marine & other sectors

Nuclear Materials (Stainless Steel, Zr/Ti, Uo2)• Primary processing of steels, Zr and Ti alloys

• Key properties of steels, Zr and Ti alloys

• Steel Zr and Ti alloy specifications

• Nuclear applications of steels, Zr and Ti

• Manufacture of Uo2 fuel pellets

• Effects of irradiation

Assessment and CertificationKnowledge gained from each of the taught courses is assessed via on-line multiple choice examinations. Results from these will be aggregated and successful candidates will be issued with a University of Sheffield Certificate of Achievement. (Note that this does not constitute a formal, accredited qualification.)

Entry Guidelines Although there are no formal entry requirements, it is recommended that candidates have GCSE grade A, B or C and preferably A levels in maths and physics/chemistry.

Programme Fees and Registration£2500 (VAT not applicable) includes registration and attendance at six one-day courses, including on-line assessment. Additional courses may be attended for £400 per day.
