IVAN For our monument we wanted to create a space in which people can retreat to during their busy lives. This led us to the idea of meditation. Going into a space that can encapsulate the feeling of solitude. Meta refers to after, beyond, adjacent, and self. The act of meditation is an experience of metamorphosis, and in regards to etymology it is the science of what is beyond the physical.

MCKENZIE We wanted to create a monument that would be visually dynamic from all angles and allow visitors to go inside to escape the hustle and bustle of the urban environment.

MCKENZIEUsing transformation as inspiration we saw the progression we could create from the busy city to the quite secluded space into our monument.

IVANBy placing the monument in a park it is easily accessible to all. It will catch the eyes of those who see it from afar and up close. We wanted to use natural elements to refer back to the organic forms that nature can create.

Page 5: Meta Monument Presentation

MCKENZIEThe materials being used are inspired by the traditional sense of meditation and keeping it natural but creating a stream line way that removes it from the connotations of the typical buddhist zen garden or temple.

IVANWe have a combination of the earth with water and the structure. All of them working together to complete the experience.

IVANAs the patron enters the space through the singular opening of the glass and metal, there is a sort of sensory depravation that occurs.

Page 8: Meta Monument Presentation

IVANThe glass on both sides blocks out noise.

Page 9: Meta Monument Presentation

IVAN The glass also allows for the natural light and the outside weather to have an affect on the space. Constructing an organic experience each time when entering the space.

MCKENZIEOnce in the space the platform reaches out over the water allowing the visitor to sit, stand, and take time anywhere they please. The high ceilings from the wave of metal change the senses of a person by creating an overwhelming feeling. Making them feel small... in this big world...

IVANIn a large urban environment the city doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. We shaped an experience that is more specific to the night time.

Page 12: Meta Monument Presentation

IVANA lot of people retreat not only during the day, but now they can at night as well. They can walk out on to the diving board and view the light that bounces of the reflecting pool.

Page 13: Meta Monument Presentation

MCKENZIEWe hope that Meta will become a place of retreat for the residents of New York city. Taking the journey that we have provided the viewers will promote a time for self-reflection. The ability to take time for ones self is crucial in the world we live in.
