    Messiah Lutheran Church

Welcomes You to the Lord's House

Welcome to Messiah! Whether you’re a member, a returning guest, or maybe

this is your first time at Messiah, we welcome you to this time of worship. During

our time together, we hope that you experience the presence and love of God in

a profound and life-changing way! May the music we share stir you, may the

prayers we offer comfort you, and may the proclaimed Word of God challenge

you to live with a new passion and purpose. Again, we are honored that you

have chosen to worship here today. Let’s give God all glory and praise.

First-Time guests, we invite you to look through the “Welcome to Messiah”

brochure found in the attendance card slot on the pew in front of you. If you

have any questions, please talk to an usher.

Once we enter God’s House, we pray that our hearts are changed, and that His

perspective becomes ours; that we release the cares of this world, and bask in the

beauty of His holiness; that we give Him whatever burdens our heart, and find

the Spirit’s peace that passes all human understanding; that we learn more about

Jesus through His Word, and the joy that comes from a closer walk with the Lord.

If music is being played, we invite you to open the Bible in front of you, and focus

on His Word, or spend time in quiet prayer.

If a song is being sung, words are provided on the screens at the front of the

sanctuary. We invite you to sing along, or meditate on the song’s message.

    O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You;

my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your power and glory.

Because Your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You.

So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name I will lift up my hands. Psalm 63:1-4

    Luther's Morning Prayer

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have

kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this

day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into

Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel

be with me, that the wicked foe may have no power over me. Amen.

THE PRAISE MELDEY “Surely the Presence” & “Let’s Just Praise the Lord”

    THE GREETING

THE OPENING SONG “Let There Be Praise”

    THE INVOCATION

P: We celebrate today in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and

    of the Holy Spirit.

    C: Amen.

    P: The Lord lifts up the humble;

C: He casts the wicked to the ground.

P: Remember Your mercy, O Lord, and Your steadfast love

C: For they have been from of old.

    P: Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;

C: According to Your steadfast love, remember me, for the sake of Your

    goodness, O Lord!

    THE CONFESSION OF SINS

P: Let us kneel and confess our sins to God, our Father.

C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities

with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your

temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them

and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy

It has become commonplace to speak of God as responsible for determining life and death for us. So we wonder where is God’s justice when the innocent suffer or His mercy when tragedy strikes. But the Lord insists He has no pleasure in the death of anyone—not even the sinner who deserves his punishment. God’s good and gracious will is that all would be saved and come to the knowledge of His Son. Think how differently we would approach the troubles and trials that affect us and the greater disasters of the world if we took the Lord at His Word and trusted in His will. P=Pastor C=Congregation In the Invocation, we "invoke" God’s presence by repeating the name in which we were baptized by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In the Confession, we bare our souls before the Lord, admitting our sins and accepting responsibility for the harm they caused in our relationships with God and with each other. (1 John 1:8-9; Rom. 3:23)

    The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

    September 27, 2020 11:00am Worship

Let there be praise, let there be joy in our hearts!

Sing to the Lord; give Him the glory!

Let there be praise, let there be joy in our hearts!

Forevermore, let His love fill the air and let there be praise!

Let there be praise, let there be joy in our hearts!

Sing to the Lord; give Him the glory!

Let there be praise, let there be joy in our hearts!

Forevermore, let His love fill the air and let there be praise!

Let there, oh, let there be praise!

and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of

Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a

    poor, sinful being.

P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained

servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the

stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your

sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

    C: Amen.

    THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

P: The Lord be with you.

    C: And also with you.

P: O God of life and hope, You have given rescue to sinners in despair of their

sins and to those marked for death. Turn our attention to Your mercy that

we learn to rejoice in Your good will, that all would be saved and come to

the knowledge of Christ our Savior; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who

lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

    C: Amen.

THE FIRST LESSON Ezekiel 18:25–32 25“Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear now, O house of Israel:

Is my way not just? Is it not your ways that are not just? 26When a righteous

person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die

for it; for the injustice that he has done he shall die. 27Again, when a wicked

person turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is

just and right, he shall save his life. 28Because he considered and turned

    away from all the transgressions that he had committed, he shall surely live;

he shall not die. 29Yet the house of Israel says, ‘The way of the Lord is not

just.’ O house of Israel, are my ways not just? Is it not your ways that are

not just? 30“Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one

according to his ways, declares the Lord God. Repent and turn from all

your transgressions, lest iniquity be your ruin. 31Cast away from you all the

transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart

and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? 32For I have no

pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and live.”

The pastor then speaks God's Word to give the forgiveness Jesus won for us on the cross. (John 20:23) In the Collect, The pastor and congregation greet each other as the angel greeted Mary at her annunciation. (Luke 1:28) The phrase also indicates the special relationship between the pastor and the congregation. We call this prayer a "Collect" because it collects the themes of the lessons and puts them into a prayer. The First Lesson is taken from a book of the Old Testament. It coordinates with the Gospel lesson, and is found on page 705 in the pew Bible.

    THE EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 2:1-4

1If there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any

participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2complete my joy by

being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of

one mind. 3Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others

more significant than yourselves. 4Let each of you look not only to his own

interests, but also to the interests of others.

THE GOSPEL SONG “Open Our Eyes, Lord”

THE HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 21:28-32 28“What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and

said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ 29And he answered, ‘I will

not,’ but afterward he changed his mind and went. 30And he went to the

other son and said the same. And he answered, ‘I go, sir,’ but did not

go. 31Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus

said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go

into the kingdom of God before you. 32For John came to you in the way of

righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the

prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward

change your minds and believe him.”

P: This is the Gospel of our Lord.

    C: Thanks be to God.

WE CONFESS OUR FAITH-The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the

Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was

crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day

He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the

right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to

judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy

Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Epistle Lesson is generally from St. Paul’s letters, and is found on page 980 in the pew Bible. The Gospel Verse may change weekly. Today’s verse is based on the sermon series. We rise for the Holy Gospel as we would stand for Jesus Himself, since the Gospel is His living Word to us. The Gospel Lesson is selected according to the sermon series, and is found on page 826 in the pew Bible. We respond to the Word of God with an acclamation of praise, and then confess our faith. The Apostles Creed dates from about 75 AD and was used in the instruction of those to be baptized. We are confessing our personal faith.

Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus,

To reach out and touch Him, and say that we love Him.

Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen.

Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus.

THE SERMON HYMN “I, the Lord of Sea and Sky” The Sermon Hymn reflects the message for today, as well as stressing the words we just read in the Gospel lesson.

THE SERMON “Not Me” Matthew 21:28

    1. A response of defiance.

    2. A response of insincerity.

    3. A response of action.

THE RESPONSE TO THE SERMON “Use Me”

    THE OFFERING PRAYER

The Sermon applies God’s Word to our lives and helps to equip us to fulfill our baptismal calling to new life in Christ. After the Offering Prayer, we ask all of those watching the service on the live stream, please fill out an attendance card. If you have any special prayer requests, you will find a space for this online as well. For those in attendance, please fill out a card that is in the pew. You can place your card in the offering plate as you leave the Sanctuary. Thank you.

Use me, Jesus, use me. Take this life of mine and use me.

Use me, Jesus, use me. Keep me by Your side and use me.

All I want is to be with You, to ever please You in all I do.

Teach me Father to learn Your ways, and walk with me each day.

    Use me, Jesus, use me.

Take this life of mine and use me.

    Use me, Jesus, use me.

Keep me by Your side and use me.

    Mold me, make me

What You would have me be.

I only want to serve You faithfully.

Help me Father to truly see

    What You have for me.

    Use me, Jesus, use me.

Take this life of mine and use me.

    Use me, Jesus, use me.

Keep me by Your side and use me.

Lord Jesus keep me by Your side and use me.

Lord Jesus keep me by Your side and use me.

    THE PRAYERS OF THE CONGREGATION

    THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH

P: Let us pray for the whole Church of God in Christ Jesus and for all people

according to their needs. O God, our heavenly Father, You sent Your Son

Jesus Christ to be the payment for the sins of the whole world. O Lord,

    hear our prayers.

C: We thank and praise You for Your countless blessings that You

shower upon us daily. We treasure Your steadfast love and care.

P: Be with those who are suffering due to the impact of hurricanes and

wildfires in our nation. Give the first responders strength, courage and

protection as they work in these dangerous situations. Use them to show

Your compassion and love, as they serve You in powerful ways. May those

who have lost homes, loved ones and treasured possessions embrace the

hope and assurance that You are always with them now and always.

C: Our hearts are heavy with their suffering and loss. Give us the strong

determination to help ease their worries by giving them support and

relief in meaningful ways. We thank You for all those who have

already given of their time, talent and resources to help those in

need, thus bringing glory to Your name.

P: Dearest Father, we pray for Your healing hand to touch those affected by

the coronavirus. Guide the doctors, nurses, researchers and caregivers as

they work to provide compassionate care. Lord, we pray that You will

    deliver us from this pandemic.

C: Guide us towards Your purpose for our lives and how we can be Your

hands and feet in our world.

P: Lord, we pray that You would soften all hearts and minds with peace, love,

and understanding, so that all of Your people can live in unity and mutual

    respect.

C: May those who embrace evil and hatred be defeated, so that

    goodness and love can abound.

P: O Lord Jesus Christ, in Your Blessed Sacrament You give us Your body and

blood for the forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith.

C: As we receive these gifts, help us to make confession of the unity You

give in this Sacrament. May all who come to Your table to receive

Your body and blood receive it to their good and to the glory of Your

    holy name.

P: All these things and whatever else You would have us ask, grant us,

Heavenly Father, for the sake of Him who died and rose again and now

lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God forever.

    C: Amen.

Prayer is one of the marks of the congregation gathered in worship, according to Acts 2:42. More prayer requests are found in the Announcement Guide. Please take them with you to use for your prayer time this week.

    THE SANCTUS

    THE LORD’S PRAYER

C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom

come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day

our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those

who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver

us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory

    forever and ever. Amen.

    THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread,

and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples

and said: "Take eat; this is my body, which is given for you. This do in

remembrance of me." In the same way also He took the cup after supper,

and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: "Drink of it, all

of you; this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you for

the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance

of me." The peace of the Lord be with you always.

    C: And also with you.

“Sanctus” is the Latin word for holy, and is the name of an important hymn of Christian liturgy. It is sung at the heart of the eucharistic prayer, the prayer of consecration of the bread and wine. The text is taken from Isaiah 6:3, which describes the prophet’s vision of the throne of God surrounded by six-winged, ministering seraphim. This text is also influenced by Revelation. 4:8. The concluding text, "blessed is He who comes.” The Lord's Prayer is the prayer Jesus taught to His disciples and to us in His Word. (Matthew 6:9-13 and Luke 11:2-4) The Words of Institution are a collection of all four Gospel accounts of the Last Supper, based on the oldest and fullest text found in 1 Corinthians 11.

    THE AGNUS DEI

    THE COMMUNION

If you are a guest today, please read page 15 before communing.

    THE COMMUNION ANTHEM “How Beautiful”

The Agnus Dei is a canticle that found its way into the liturgy as early as the 8th century. Following Jesus' baptism, John the Baptist acclaims Him as the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world." John 1:36 A Prayer before Communing- Dear Savior, at Your gracious invitation I come to Your table to eat and drink Your holy body and blood. Let me find favor in Your eyes to receive this holy Sacrament in faith for the salvation of my soul and to the glory of Your holy name; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

How beautiful the hands that served

The wine and the bread and the sons of the earth.

How beautiful the feet that walked

The long dusty roads and the hill to the cross. How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ.

How beautiful the heart that bled, that took all my sin and bore it instead.

How beautiful the tender eyes, that chose to forgive and never despise.

How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ.

And as He laid down His life, we offer this sacrifice

That we will live just as He died, willing to pay the price, Willing to pay the price.

    How beautiful the radiant Bride

Who waits for her Groom with His light in her eyes.

How beautiful when humble hearts give

The fruit of pure lives so that others may live.

How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ.

How beautiful the feet that bring

The sound of good news and the love of the King.

How beautiful the hands that serve

The wine and the bread and the sons of the earth.

How beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful is the body of Christ.

“Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:9-11

THE COMMUNION SONGS “Let There Be Peace on Earth”

    “Wonderful, Merciful Savior”

    “Jesus Paid It All”

Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.

Let there be peace on earth,

The peace that was meant to be

With God as our Father, brothers all are we.

Let me walk with my brother in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now

With every step I take, let this be my solemn vow

To take each moment, and live each moment In peace eternally.

Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.

Lord, send Your peace to me, as uncertain days are near.

With You here by my side there’s nothing I need to fear.

With You, our True Leader, Ruler over all,

There’s no reason to worry, though earthly kings may fall.

Lord, let peace reign in us and keep our minds calm and still.

Send wisdom from above and help us to do Your will.

Lord, make our nation a holy nation of love and unity.

Lord, fill the lives of all with faith, hope and charity.

Wonderful, merciful Savior, precious Redeemer and Friend

Who would have thought that a Lamb could rescue the souls of men

Oh, You rescue the souls of men.

Counselor, Comforter, Keeper, Spirit we long to embrace You offer hope when our hearts have hopelessly lost the way

Oh, we've hopelessly lost the way.

Chorus: You are the One that we praise. You are the One we adore.

You give the healing and grace our hearts always hunger for

Oh, our hearts always hunger for.

Almighty, infinite Father, faithfully loving Your own Here in our weakness You find us falling before Your throne

Oh, we're falling before Your throne. Chorus

    I hear the Savior say “Thy strength indeed is small;

Child of weakness, watch and pray. Find in Me, thine all in all.”

Jesus paid it all. All to Him I owe.

Sin had left a crimson stain. He washed it white as snow.

A Prayer after Communing– Almighty and everlasting God I thank and praise You for feeding me the life-giving body and blood of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send Your Holy Spirit that, having with my mouth received the holy Sacrament, I may by faith obtain and eternally enjoy Your divine grace, the forgiveness of sins, unity with Christ, and life eternal, through Jesus Christ, My Lord. Amen The Post-Communion Song is based on the Words of Institution. We have eaten Christ's body and drank His blood. The personal encounter with Christ and His gifts in the Lord's Supper leads indeed to a joyful service to "share the peace, hope, and life with others!" Then follows the Aaronic Benediction in which the Lord recognizes us as His people, putting His name on us, and fulfilling all promises in His name. (Num. 6:24-25; Matt. 18:19-20)

    THE POST COMMUNION SONG

    THE BENEDICTION

P: The Lord bless you and keep you.

The Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you.

The Lord look upon you with His favor and give you His peace.

    C: Amen.

Lord, now indeed I find Thy pow’r and Thine alone,

Can change the leper’s spots, and melt the heart of stone.

Chorus: Jesus paid it all. All to Him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain. He washed it white as snow.

    For nothing good have I whereby Thy grace to claim;

I’ll wash my garments white in the blood of Calvary’s Lamb. Chorus

And when before the throne, I stand in Him complete,

“Jesus died, my soul to save,” my lips shall still repeat. Chorus

Oh praise the One Who paid my debt,

And raised this life up from the dead. (sing 4 times) Chorus

Sin had left a crimson stain. He washed it white as snow.

As You come to the Lord's Supper, you are affirming with each communicant that Jesus is your

Savior and Lord, that with Lutheran Christians, you believe His Body and Blood are present and

you desire to serve Him as a dynamic disciple in the fellowship of all believers. Our Holy

Communion practice is called "CLOSE" communion, not "CLOSED" communion. "Close"

communion invites all those who answer the following questions in the affirmative. We DO seek

to help each visitor and member, to prepare for the celebration of the Sacrament. If you have

not communed with us before, or if you cannot answer yes to the questions below, please speak

to our Pastor or an Elder before communing.

    1. Have I been baptized in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

    2. Do I believe that I am a sinful human being without hope of eternal life except for God's

    mercy in Christ?

    3. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is God's Son and my personal Savior from sin, death, and

    the power of the devil?

    4. Do I believe that Jesus Christ is personally present in the Sacrament of Holy Communion

with His true Body and Blood?

    5. Do I intend, by the power of the Holy Spirit, to live a Godly life?

At Messiah, Communion is distributed in a manner whereby the individual cup, followed by the

common cup, are offered at the same table. Communicants seated in the middle sections of the

Sanctuary proceed to the altar first, standing behind the usher. Then the communicants in the

side sections will proceed to the altar, also standing behind the usher. This will provide a

prayerful setting surrounding the significance of receiving Christ's body and blood.

A wine that has been chemically treated to remove all alcohol and sulfites is offered in clear

glasses in the individual trays. Gluten-free wafers are available at the usher tables in the back.
