The Lord delivered Wilbur Lowman

right to our door! He chose to attend

our church around the time our parishes

began the merging process, and has

been worshiping with us ever since. As

one of our newest parishioners, Wilbur

has already been selected as the 2017

Ascension “Man of the Year”.

It’s no wonder that he achieved this

award so quickly. Wilbur is all about

SERVICE to others. He’s a native St.

Louisan who graduated from Central

HS in 1979. After graduation, he

served in the US Navy as an Aviation

Machinist Mate. Upon this veteran’s

return to St. Louis, he found work at

Talayna’s Restaurant as a dishwasher.

There, he was trained in various

aspects of the food service business.

And eventually, he worked his way up

to become a manager.

Today, Mr. Lowman

serves others as a

cook at The Little

Sisters of the Poor, a

Catholic senior citizen

facility that serves the

poor and elderly.

Wilbur works a de-

manding 6-day work

week preparing home-

style meals for the facility’s residents.

Yet, he has found time to be a parish

shuttle driver and serve in the Men’s

Club.

Wilbur loves mentoring youth. He also enjoys sports, particularly basketball, and is an avid Cardinals fan. He is proud of his rally towel that has autographs from local sportscasters. He would love, one day, to own a restaurant or landscaping business. Meanwhile, he expresses his faith through service to his parish, community, and country. He is the loving father of 5 children and 10 grand-children. Wilbur, we salute you!

Bishop Smith Announces Retirement After much contemplation and consultation with family and colleagues, The Right Rev. George Wayne Smith announced his intention to resign as bishop in an April letter to everyone in the Diocese. He has called for the election of his successor at the November 2019 Diocesan Convention. The ordination of a new bishop is expected sometime in the spring 2020. His resignation will become effective on that date. This sets in motion the process to search for the 11

th bishop of the

Missouri Diocese.

The Standing Committee is now in charge of the search process. They'll work with a consultant who has been trained by the Episcopal Church in bishop transitions. Guided by the canons of the Diocese and wider church, and best practices, their work will include setting up a timeline, creating the position announcement and diocesan profile, and creating nomination and transitional committees. They will be making progress reports to the Diocese.

You’ve probably heard the term, “Lazy Days of Summer”. But for All Saints & Ascension, these days are any-thing but lazy. There are LOTS of things going on:

Probably the most exciting activity is the ongoing collaboration of our Architectural Committee with Jim Riddle Designs. We’ve gotten to the point where we are ready to make a presentation to the Standing Committee of the Diocese to share our building plans and ask for financial backing. Part of this presentation will include our plans

for growth and mission to our com-munity. This is so that the members of the Standing Committee can be confident of our future as a parish as they consider their support for changes to our physical plant. Please visit our parish website and check out the Architectural Commit-tee webpage for more details. A group of volunteers is readying a Vacation Bible School program for the week of July 9-13. This will be a fine way for us to reach out to the youth of our community. The Men’s Club and Episcopal Church Women’s groups have been

formulating plans for a full schedule of events, including breakfasts, parish picnic, and outreach to youth in detention through Episcopal City Mission among others. By the time you read this, the legalities of changing our parish name to Episcopal Church of All Saints and Ascension will be com-plete, and the Finance Committee will be busy with the merging of bank accounts, of bookkeeping chores, and of Sunday teller duties. Our congregation is alive and well, and on the move! Come and be a part of this new Community of Love!!

group of St. Louis women envisioned an

organization dedicated solely to the

purpose of providing services to those in

our community suffering from cancer.

Their dream became reality in April of

1949 when the St. Louis Peregrine

Society (originally incorporated as the St.

Louis Cancer Society) was formed. Their

mission has always been to “improve the

quality of life of cancer patients living in

St. Louis City and County.” It fills a void by providing

services and supplies to uninsured or under-insured

patients with support critical to their care.

Hunter is only 4 years old. Like mom, perhaps it is time to begin piano lessons (hint hint). Regardless, Andrea says that this is not goodbye forever. The Hunters plan to visit us as much as they can. So farewell, and thanks for sharing your musical talents with us for the past year.

She was only 4 years old when she began piano lessons. Since then, our former music director, Andrea Hunter, has earned several related honors and degrees. In 2017, she earned a MA in Musicology and Music

Theory from Webster University. Thanks be to God, that same year, we were blessed with her talents as she became our music director.

But on Sunday, May 27th she had to bid us farewell. She, her husband Nick Hunter, and their daughter Bree, moved to Quincy, Illinois to care for her parents who are both in poor health. Fortunately, Nick got a job offer that allowed them to live closer to her parents. Perhaps another blessing from God.

Andrea says that working at our church has been her favorite job ever. She says she is so sad to be leaving and will miss her church family. We will miss the Hunter family, especially Bree’s heart-warming smile. Bree

Peregrine Society honored

Annie White with the

Distinguished Service Award for

her service and dedication to

the success of the organization.

Annie is a board member and is working as chairperson

of the All Saints and Ascension chapter. Fr. Dunnington,

and several proud members of the parish, attended the

69th anniversary celebration that honored her.

So what is this Peregrine Society, to which parishioners

are asked to donate every year, anyway? In 1948, a

A Message from the Priest In Charge

On May 15th, our Music and Arts Village

(formerly ASMAV) students hosted a piano

recital at Boulevard Memorial Church on north

Kingshighway where we continue to rent space.

Adrienne Dillon conducts weekly keyboard lessons for

the students.

Five children showed off their piano skills: Dakista Word, Chelsea West, Cayleigh Moore, Camille Moore, and Camryn Moore. Each student played two selections to the delight of family and friends. Perhaps our future music director is among them!

On Sunday, April 29, 2018 Pat Heeter, Laura Mabry, Margarett Williams, and Rica Bond-Williams attend-ed the Distinguished Women of the Diocese Luncheon sponsored by the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) Board of the Diocese. Pat was one of seven nominees honored as the most distinguished women from around the Diocese. To be nominated, a candi-date must be a woman whose “Christian principles are lived out in both her secular and sacred communities”. Congrats to Pat on receiving this prestigious award! Sharon Meusch from Christ Episcopal Church, Rolla, MO is the Diocesan nominee forwarded to the National ECW Board. She will be given consideration for national recognition at the Triennial Meeting during general convention in Austin Texas in July. Congratulations to Sharon!

Graduate Reception

On Sunday, June 10th, the St. Margaret’s Guild hosted a reception in honor of parishioners that have recently graduated. Alexia Dukes (affectionately known as Muffin)

graduated with honors from McCluer High School. In the fall, she will be at-tending Harris-Stowe State University and plans to major in Psychology. Camryn Moore, an 8th grade honors student, graduated from Christ the King Catholic School. She will enter 9th grade at Incarnate Word Academy in the fall.

Arianna Lacey is a 6th grade graduate from Dewey International and will enter Carr Lane Middle School next semester.

Bishop Curry at Royal Wedding Michael Curry, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church USA, gave a robust and impassioned sermon on love at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Amidst the stoical deco-rum of British tradition, his call for love included everything from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to American history on slavery, and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Curry said “We must discover the power, the redemptive power, of love. And when we discover that, we will be able to make of this old world a new world. Love is the only way.” His rousing message was heard by countless celebrities, British royalty, regular Britons and millions watching globally as the Bishop contin-ues the campaign of “Reclaiming Jesus”. The Men’s Club honored all wom-en having “motherly” characteris-

tics on Mother’s Day. The ladies were treated to break-fast, a rose, and a short tribute. And some were sur-prised with family visits, gifts, and full flower bouquets.

Our Food Pantry, which services clients from 10am until 1pm on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, needs our help. This is one of several outreach ministries of our combined

congregations which needs your financial assistance to enable it to perform this ministry. If interested in volunteering, please speak with Prince Thomas or Louise Trudo (Food Pantry Chairperson). When contributing, please designate that your contribution is for the food pantry.

Community Children’s Choir

Rehearsals are held on Thursdays at 6 pm at the church. We are look-ing for more boys and girls, ages 8 to 14. Great voices are not needed. Only enthusiasm! See Adrienne Dillon or contact the parish office with any questions or concerns.

As many of you know, Harold has gone far, far beyond the call of duty as sexton for our church over the years. So when he had a medical setback and was unable to work, the Vestry voted to setup a fund for him and invited everyone to contribute. You answered the call! Without hesitation, many parishioners, friends, and others submitted donations totaling almost $1200. In addition to the financial gift, ECW gave the Briggs family a food basket on Easter Sunday. Continue to pray for Harold as he continues to recover.
