Peace with Justice Sunday Offering

Sunday, May 22nd, 2016 Wherever we hide, God calls us from our own little cor-ners to be peacemakers and justice shakers. Susan Alan’s corner of the world has justice fever. With the help of a 2015 Peace with Justice grant, youth and young adults in Raleigh, North Carolina, are knee-deep in growing community gardens. In addition, they plow beside poor– and sometimes mistreated– farmworkers. “Maybe the most important thing we can do is empower young people to get active in social justice,” said Alan of the National Farm Worker Ministry. In other corners of the world such as Florida, a Peace with Justice grant enables young adult missionaries to prepare immigration paperwork. Fossil Free United Methodist Church, Seattle, received a Peace with Justice grant to continue work in divesting humanity of the use of fossil fuels. Because of a Peace with Justice grant, women in Cotabato, Philippines, are staring businesses. On Peace with Justice Sunday, United Methodist travel in conscience and compassion to all corners of the world, sharing the love of Jesus Christ. Special offering envelopes will be available in the bulletin and in the narthex.

MISSIONS & MINISTRIES OF LA CANADA UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Children’s Center Ministry The Children’s Center is an important min-istry of this church and an important link to those families who have not identified a church home. In an effort to invite parents to come to the church their children are fa-miliar with and love, I will be attending ac-tivities in which the parents have been invit-ed such as Mother’s Day Tea, Father’s Day Tea, Graduation, etc. My outreach to these parents will also include an article in their monthly newsletter, conversation with par-ents at special events, and above all else continual prayer for these children and their families. The chapel program instituted by Pastor Elaine has been very successful. We have seen spiritual growth in the Center’s chil-dren. I am continuing the chapel program 4 times a month, twice for the older children and twice for the younger ones. During Chapel, we pray, sing, learn a Bible story and sometimes act out the roles of the Bi-ble story. The children leave with a coloring page that contains a Bible verse and a pic-ture of the Bible story we have covered in Chapel. The children love their Chapel time.

Denise Lenore, Minister of Children and Family Ministries

Children’s Ministries Thanks to Chad Loucks acting as the inter-im Children’s Minister this year, our chil-dren have been learning from Konnect Vid-eo Series Curriculum. Each week the chil-dren watch a short video, in which teens and elementary kids have situations in their life that poses a question for them and us. The video presents the story of one of the characters in the Bible followed by a dis-cussion. The children are given a challenge card to take home to do an activity with parents and memorize the Bible verse they learned on Sunday. Each Sunday the chil-dren are asked to recite what they have learned from the weekly activity. They earn points toward prizes from which can select the first Sunday of each month. Conti...

As the new Minister of Children and Family ministries, I am currently continuing this cur-riculum series. This year, the children have learned about peer relationships, emotions, Grace and are now studying Faith. In the future, we hope to enrich our video learnings with supplemental activities, singing, skit acting, special events and participating in the Sunday worship ser-vice.

I am looking for those interested in helping on a given Sunday to be the nursery at-tendant when visitors bring an infant with them to church.

Though a person is assigned a particular Sunday, if no infant shows up, that per-son can remain in worship. I am asking each of you to prayerfully consider com-mitting to serving as one of the people on rotation to watch over the infants or step in and help with the Sunday school lesson as needed. For those of you una-ble to help in Sunday School, please pray for our children and youth minis-tries, children, youth and ministers.
