Messages is a four-level course for upper-primary students. Each level contains six modules of two units, each divided into three manageable ‘steps’. Clear aims and outcomes for each step mean students can put what they learn into practice immediately.

Each level of the course provides 90 hours of classwork with lots of recycling in regular four-page review sections. Level one assumes students have studied English at lower-primary level, but gives full coverage of all basic language areas. The course takes students to an A2 level by the end of Messages 4.

Step by step to great results● ‘Use what you know’ sections at the end of each

step activate the students’ language.

● ‘Life and culture’ sections and continuous stories provide rich reading resources.

● Coursework activities on a connected theme at each level mean students build up portfolios of work. The theme of Level 3 is My guidebook.

● A variety of exercises where students can work to their own level makes the course ideal for mixed-ability classes.

● Each module has its own , a series of specially designed websites for students to use.

● The Teacher’s Resource Pack provides photocopiable tests, extra activities and drills.

When she’s at home in Veracruz, Ana usually starts the day with some chilaquiles and a hot chocolate. She always has breakfast with her sister Clara, and they talk about their plans for the day.

Now, of course, everything’s different. At the moment she’s sitting in the kitchen with her English family, the Grants. She’s having a cup of coffee and a piece of toast. The Grants always have coffee and toast for breakfast. It’s raining outside and the Grants are talking about the weather again. But Ana isn’t listening. She’s looking at the rain and she’s thinking about her sister, at home in Veracruz.

c Listen again and follow in your book. Ask and answer the questions.

12 Module 1

messages3_student's-book.indb 12 26.8.2013 10:52:29

The English language is a mixture of several different languages – mainly Latin, Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian and French. The word dentist, for example, comes from the Latin ‘dentes’, meaning teeth. This explains why there are often two or three words with the same meaning, for example to begin, to start, to commence. It is also the reason why English spelling can be so strange. We ‘write’ (/raIt/) a question and we give the ‘right’ (/raIt/) answer – the pronunciation is the same but the spelling is different. Today, the British use the Roman alphabet (a, b, c), Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3), the names of Viking gods for days of the week, and even old French – for example when the Queen writes ‘Le Roi le veult’ to show her agreement to a new law in parliament. But how did all this happen?

The first inhabitants of the British Isles were hunters. About five thousand years ago, settlers from Europe started to arrive. Celts, Romans, Angles and Saxons, and then Vikings all invaded at different times. For 200 years, England had Anglo-Saxon kings and Danish kings. In 1066, the French

arrived on the south coast of England. William, Duke of Normandy, defeated the Saxon King Harold at the Battle of Hastings and became the king of England. For the next 300 years, the kings of England spoke French and they ruled a large part of France too.

In the fifteenth century, England lost her lands in France, and the French language began to lose its importance. At the same time, the first English books appeared. After that, English finally became the official written and spoken language of the country.

Survival!Teenager Brian Robeson was travelling from the USA to Canada to see his father. He was the only passenger in a small plane, high above the Canadian mountains, when suddenly the pilot had a heart attack and died!

Brian was terrified. He was shaking, but he tried not to panic. Below him, he could see a lake. He turned the plane towards the lake and, incredibly, he landed on the water. Brian got out of the plane just before it sank. He swam to the beach and then he fell asleep, exhausted.

When Brian woke up the next morning, he was cold and hungry. The quiet boy from New York only had the clothes he was wearing and a small hatchet (a present from his mother). Then he remembered a TV programme about how to survive in the wild. He made a shelter with grass and some branches from the trees. He used his hatchet to cut wood and start a fire. He ate fruit from the forest. He made a spear to catch fish in the lake, and he made a bow and arrow to kill rabbits and birds.

One night there was a fierce storm and the plane came to the surface of the lake. Brian swam to the plane and found some food, a knife and a small radio. He tried to call for help on the radio, but he wasn’t sure how it worked.

One day, a few weeks later, while Brian was fishing by the lake, he heard a noise. He could see a plane above the trees. It was looking for him! Quickly, he made a fire, and the pilot saw the smoke. After fifty-four days in the Canadian woods, Brian’s amazing adventure was finally over.

The Silk Road connects China to Europe. From 500BC people travelled along the Silk Road to buy and sell things. Camels carried silk and spices to Europe, and returned with gold and silver. The road was 7,000 kilometres long and it could often be dangerous. Marco Polo was the first person to travel the whole way along the road. His journey started in Venice in 1271 and he returned home 24 years later!

In 1911 Roald Amundsen from Norway became the first person to reach the South Pole. A British team of explorers, with their leader Robert Scott, were trying to get there at the same time. The Norwegian team arrived at the Pole on 14th December, 33 days before Scott’s team. Scott and his four men all died on their return journey.

Between 800 and 1100, the Vikings sailed across the Atlantic from Scandinavia to Greenland and North America. In 1000, Leif Eriksson landed on the coast of North America – nearly 500 years before Columbus. In 1961, researchers found part of a Viking village on the east coast of Canada.

In 1519, an expedition by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan made the first voyage around the world. It lasted three years. But Magellan never completed the journey. He died in a battle in the Spice Islands before his ship returned home.

The continent of America took its name from the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci. Vespucci explored South America in the 15th century, after Columbus’s famous journey there.

My guidebook

Ana’s making a guidebook about the UK. It’s for other foreign students who are interested in visiting the UK in the future. This is her first page.

Read Ana’s page about ‘home life’ in the UK, then make your own ‘home life’ page for a guidebook for visitors to Croatia. Write about your daily life, and about everyday life in general in Croatia.

If you stay with an English family, what will life be like? I don’t know if the Grants are a typical English family, but I’ll tell you about my life at their flat in north-west London.During the week, the day starts at about 7.15. We have our breakfast in the kitchen. Tim and Penny Grant always have toast and coffee, but a lot of English people prefer tea. Charlie (Tim and Penny’s son) has orange juice and cereal. If everyone is in a hurry, we don’t have time to sit down. I often make a sandwich to take to the language school with me.

Tim and Penny leave the flat at about eight o’clock. They go to work on the tube. I get the bus to school. I usually walk to the bus stop with Charlie. A lot of British people travel to work by car. The roads are often very busy, especially during the ‘rush hour’ – the time when people go to work in the morning and go home at the end of the day.

At the weekend, Charlie and Tim sometimes go to a football match, and Tim always washes the car. Penny does the housework and Tim does the shopping at the supermarket near the flat. It’s open nearly all the time and it’s huge, with a big car park. Sometimes we go to the cinema, or we go for a walk on Hampstead Heath. Sometimes Tim and Penny’s friends come to the flat for a meal, or just to say hello.

Home life

We usually have our dinner together, but sometimes Penny works in the evening and sometimes Tim goes to the gym after work. We eat at about half past seven. After that, Tim reads the newspaper, Charlie does his homework and Penny watches TV or talks to her friends on the phone. We go to bed at about eleven.

Tim likes DIY (‘Do it yourself’) and, at the moment, he’s making some shelves for the bathroom. Penny often goes cycling at the weekend. Charlie spends a lot of time at his friend’s flat, and he often argues with his parents when he doesn’t help at home!
