MESSAGE FROM YOUR PRESIDENTCharles Crow • Club President
News from THE TURTLE POINT YACHT & COUNTRY CLUB • JULY 2012
FROM THE MANAGER Bill Colloredo • General Manager
I would like to welcome to the Turtle Point Management Staff, James Crocitto our new Director ofFood and Beverage. James is originally from California and most recently held a similar position ata club in South Carolina. James will be working with us to enhance our entire Food and Beverageoperation. Welcome to Turtle Point James!
Our long time server Vanessa Goodloe is leaving us to take care of her mother in Texas. In my shorttime here, I saw that she was a valuable member of the staff and always worked with a smile on herface and loved taking care of our members. I wish her the best of luck in her future endeavors.
July at Turtle Point is packed with fun activities for the entire family. Join us on July 4th for our Patriotic Independence DayCelebration. Our picnic will be from 4pm-8pm featuring Chef Mark’s Southern Barbecue. Turtle Point’s own Harvey Thompsonand his band will be performing near the pool from 4 – 8 PM. The pool will be open from 10am-8pm, and we will have inflatablejumpers for the children. In addition to regular golf course play you can choose to participate in our Annual Robbins’ Cup GolfTournament. Call the Golf Shop for details.
On Friday night, July 20th, Turtle Point pays tribute to WC Handy and we kick-off our Annual Boaters’ weekend with a specialFriday night Family Buffet featuring music by “The Decoys” for the entire family to enjoy. Finishing our tribute to WC Handywe will have a Handy Festival Jazz Brunch on Sunday, July 29th with entertainment by the “Ray Reach Trio.”
Make plans to join us for all the fun! Please call Tricia to make your reservations. As always, please feel free to call or email meif I can help you in any way. (256-757-2153) ([email protected])
Thank you for supporting your club. I hope to see you soon and often.
As I write this article it is, without a doubt, summertime in Alabama and I hope that you are takingadvantage of all our Club has to offer while it is at its absolute peak use period for your enjoyment.
As you read this month’s newsletter please note all the events available to you on the Club calendar, highlighted by the annual Fourth of July Picnic and the W.C. Handy events. July is truly “Prime-Time”at Turtle Point, our family plans to enjoy the month and we hope to see you there!
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Mr. James Crocitto on board as our new Director ofFood and Beverage. James brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our Club and I look forwardto James, Chef Mark, Althea and our Food and Beverage Staff working together to further enhance thequality of dining and service that you should expect from your Club.
On a sad note I have to report to you that we are losing one of the main stays of our wait staff. Vanessa Goodloe’s mother hashealth problems and Vanessa has resigned her position on the staff in order to relocate her family to Houston, Texas to help carefor her. Vanessa has been on our staff for 7 years and we wish her the best as she leaves us and begins her new life. We willmiss her bright smile, can-do attitude and all those different hair styles that she sported around the clubhouse!
Remember, it is summertime and the living should be easy, hope to see you at the Club!

CARDIO & PASTA NIGHTIt is very satisfying to come up with an ideathat really takes off and becomes a winner. We started in late May offering family cardiofor $5 per individual on Wednesday eveningsfrom 6-7. We had 12 participants the firstouting, 18 the second and an impressive 31the third outing. On June 6th we had 9 PeeWees on center court and 22 adults and olderchildren on the other courts. What a blast, with great energy at the club. Going forward,Family Cardio is scheduled for July 11th andthe 25th. This fun exercise class to music isfor everyone. Give it a try!

Understanding the
Value of Competitive
Match PressureOne of the biggest hurdles Zack and I aretrying to overcome is lack of match playby our juniors. We think private lessons, camps and group lessons are great butthere is no substitute for match playbetween lessons. Jorge Capestany is aUSPTA Master Professional from theMidwest. I have heard him speak atseveral conventions and he is one of thebest. Consider the following article fromhim:
“After 23 years as a teachingprofessional, I can see a distinct shiftin players attitudes towardscompetition and playing matches. Likemost teaching pros today, I came froman era where the way juniors reachedthe highest levels was to play sets….lotsof sets. Taking private lessons and evengroup lessons were the exception, notthe norm. I remember that when wedid do a drill, we were alwayspestering the pros asking “when are wegonna play.”Almost everyone I knewgrowing up had the same attitude andwanted to play more than we wantedto just drill or hit.
Fast forward to the present andvirtually all of my students seem justthe opposite. Today’s junior players allwant to be in group lessons (some upto 3 times a week) and they all want totake private lessons, but no one wantsto play any matches. Tournament playis even a tougher sell to today’s juniorplayer.
As I speak with my fellow pros andfriends from around the country, theyall relay a similar story. Theunfortunate consequences are that atmany clubs we are creating an army ofplayers that can strike the ball well, but do not know how to compete orwin.”

As I write this letter the temperature outside is 100 degrees. It isofficially summer time in North Alabama and that means that boatingis in full swing at Turtle Point. Our new docks are packed on theweekends so get your boat out and enjoy the lake with friends andfamily.
A few marina and harbor housekeeping notes, we have had severalcomplaints of boaters not observing our no-wake rule for the harbor.Always remember that any damage that your wake may cause is yourfinancial responsibility. Also, we have had several calls concerningboaters parking in marina slips that are rented by other boaters. Please do not park your boat in a marina slip unless you are the renterof that slip. Thanks for helping us keep our harbor safe for everyone.
July brings Handy Week to the Shoals and that means Cruisin’ and Bluesin’ for our boaters. The 20th and the21st are going to be packed full of fantastic music and food so makeyour reservations today by calling the club at 256-757-2153. I hope tosee you during the 2012 edition of Turtle Point’s Boater’s Weekend!
Happy Boating!
