NEWSLETTER WINTER 2014
In August, the Academy recorded another impressive set of
GCSE results. A full breakdown can be found under ‘Exam
Results’ which is located under ‘The Academy’ section on
the website.
From an attainment perspective, 85% of pupils achieved an
A*-C in Mathematics, 71% in English, 67% in both English
and Mathematics and 20% in the EBacc.
From a progress perspective, the Academy recorded a
‘Best 8 Value Added’ score of 1024.6 and a ‘Progress 8’
score of +0.78. Both scores were the best in the
Academy’s history.
By way of recognition of the above, the Academy was
recently named in the ‘Top 500’ state schools in the
country.
By way of further developments, the Academy is currently
bidding for government funds to build an entirely new
Science and DT Block. The plans have already been drawn
up and I hope to bring you news in the Spring Term on the
progress of the bid.
As the term draws to a close, I would finally like to wish all
staff, pupils and parents an enjoyable Christmas break and I
look forward to your return in January.
Mr. N. Houchen
Principal
Message from the Principal
It has been a busy start to the year for the Governing
Body.
Directors welcomed another impressive set of GCSE
results, approved the Academy’s accounts - which can be
found on the website - and agreed on a new badge for
pupils to wear on their blazers, which is more reflective of
the branding and signage around the school.
Directors have also attended various school events and
School Council meetings and have welcomed ideas and
proposals from the School Council Executive Committee
at Pupil Focus Committee meetings.
On behalf of the Governing Body, I would like to take this
opportunity to thank staff and pupils for their excellent
work over the course of this term and wish you all a happy
Christmas.

Another memorable theatre production directed by
Miss Rossi and Mrs Schmid descended on The Eastwood

was a fantastic spectacle and enjoyed by all who watched
and participated.

The winners of the Autumn Term Jack Petchey Award
were: Grace Gunn, Josie Hedges and Alex Green.
The pupils were nominated by staff and pupils,
principally for their commitment to educational studies
and extra-curricular activities, but also for the fact that
they are excellent role models to their peers.
The pupils were awarded £200 each to buy equipment
and resources for a subject department of their choice.
Grace has given her winnings to the P.E Department to
buy new netball dresses for the team; Josie has donated
her winnings to Dance and Drama who have purchased
CD players and leotards; and Alex has split his money
between DT and Dance to buy new tools and costumes.
The three pupils will attend a regional awards ceremony
in May to receive their gold medallion from the Jack
Petchey organisers.

On Monday 17th November, Year 7 pupils visited the
Eastwood Baptist Church as part of a project where
they had to design a church that could accommodate all
denominations of Christianity.
Pupils had the opportunity to look around the church,
learn about its history and how it differs from other
denominations. Pupils also took part in an open question
and answer session where they had the opportunity to
ask anything that would help them with their design and/
or understanding of a Christian church.
A huge thank you to Rev. D. Pike at the Eastwood
Baptist Church.
