Where these perfomances can take place in a context that provides additional learning experiences, there are real benefits for our students and the audience. Two such events took place this week. Last Saturday our kapa haka group performed at the Koanga Festival, alongside groups from many Howick Pakuranga schools. This was an event rich in tikanga Maori. Our students performed a wide repetoire with skill and pride. Thanks to the teachers involved: Dave Pareanga, Hemi Raukura, Karyn Bower and Johanna O’Brien. A recent meeting with Philip Hanson, Manager of the Bruce McLaren Retirement Village, lead to a visit there this week by our kapa haka group, our Samoan dance group and our fan dance group. With this new village complex being built on Chapel Road, just around the corner from our school, we saw opportunities for interactions between our students and the village residents. After performing, our dance groups chatted with the very appreciative audience. Thanks to Serue Lee and Vai Toia for their work with our fan dance and Samoan dance groups. Enjoy the photos from these special events and other activities around our school this week. Judy Parr

Results from the Chess Power Eastern Zone Tournaments

Point View students made us all very proud by coming first and third in the Chess Power Eastern Zone Tournaments.

They have worked really hard and this time around had to compete with intermediate students because their ratings were so good but they still managed to come first!!!

What is the Walking School Bus? Our Walking School Buses have been operating for nearly eight years now. During these eight wonderful years we have had many families join us and we have created a wonderful way for our new families to be introduced to our school community. Our Walking School Buses are a great way for children to be introduced to other children, both within their year level and across the school. Also, the children are a lot more alert and ready to start their day after the walk to school. We have a lot of fun on the Walking School Bus with ‘Muffin and Milo’ mornings keeping the motivation up during the two middle terms. In November we have a birthday party for the Walking School Bus children and families, to celebrate the bus continuing for another year. We have three Walking School Bus routes, so if you are interested please follow this link and check it out at Walking School Bus Do let us know if you have any questions.

Please look out for our students! Safety outside the school gates is a real problem at the moment. We all need to look out for all the children and park safely at all times. These are some rules that are regularly broken and the fines you can get. Parking on the footpath or grass verge $40 Parked across or within 1 metre of a vehicle entrance $40 Parked within a marked bus stop $60 Double-parked $60 Parked on or within 6 metres of an intersection $60 Parked on a pedestrian crossing $60 Parked on a broken yellow line $60 These parking offences are detailed in the New Zealand Road Code.

Library Help Wanted

If anyone has a couple of hours to spare at anytime we would love some help in the library. This is to stamp and tape books. Please contact the office if you can help.

OUT OF ZONE ENROLMENTS

The out of zone ballot will be held on Wednesday 21 October 2015. Applications close on Wednesday 14 October and are drawn on Wednesday 21 October. All out of zone children must apply through the ballot system, even siblings. Please come into the office to collect the correct application form if you live out of zone and children have a sibling due to start school before October 2015. If you live in zone and have a child due to start school within the next year, we would also appreciate it if you could contact the office to make sure they are pre-enrolled.

CAN YOU HELP WITH ROAD PATROL? We desperately need a parent or grandparent to supervise the crossing at the school gate on Wednesday afternoons. You need to be available from 2.50pm to 3.15pm.

If you can help please let the office ladies know.

Wet Days On mornings when it is raining heavily we are trialling opening the gate to allow parents to drive through and drop off their children. This will only work if your children have their bags etc ready so they can get out of the car as soon as you stop so you can move on quickly to let the next car through. Please only drop off in the bus stop area and NOT on the driveway. Patience is required for this to work. When leaving please do a left hand turn only out of the school grounds.

Arriving at school after 8.45am A parent or caregiver must come into the office and sign the student in, even when you have notified us that they will be late.
