When I first started as an engineer at the air pollution unit of the Ohio Department of Health in 1972, my goal was to help protect the environment and make the world a better place in which to live. It was that simple. Now, almost four decades later, I can honestly say that this simple goal still moti- vates me and drives my thinking. Which is one of the reasons I’ve been such a long-time and active member of the Air & Waste Management Association. I’d like to ask you to think about why you entered the environmental profession, and why you became A&WMA members. Although we work in many different parts of the environmental field and in a range of capacities—engineers, consultants, regulators, edu- cators, and lawyers, to name a few—as A&WMA members, I think we all share a common purpose: to improve the environment by advancing the environmental profession. But while it is this common purpose that brings us to the Association, it is our very diversity that gives A&WMA one of its core strengths: the neutral forum. By serving as an unbiased arena for knowledge exchange, the Association provides an umbrella under which a wide variety of theories and solutions can be exchanged and tested, and the profession can advance as a result. As your president, I have been meeting with the leaders of government and industry to promote A&WMA as a fertile meeting place where ideas and proposals can be dis- cussed without prejudice. It is my desire for A&WMA to become the place where environ- mental issues can be aired and solutions forged. I encourage you to join me in this quest and help develop A&WMA into the educational and professional organization that seeks solutions to challenges. I also encourage you to celebrate our Association’s diversity, and I challenge each of you to embrace it in seeking solutions to the many environmental challenges we face. Go out and draw on the many facets of A&WMA membership in seeking solutions to chal- lenges, and make use of the resources available to you for the betterment of the environ- ment. You can start making a difference simply by participating in any of the conferences sponsored by A&WMA, or by writing an article for EM or a letter to the editor. Your ideas and insight are what allow A&WMA to achieve its core purpose of advancing the environ- mental profession. You, the membership of A&WMA, are key stewards of the environment. You are the leaders of the environmental profession, and you bear some responsibility in helping to protect and improve the environment for future generations, in whatever way you can. Remember why you entered this profession and why you became an A&WMA member— then challenge yourself to do your part to advance this great profession of ours. T hinking about A&WMA’s core purpose got me thinking about my core purposeas an environmental professional. When I first started as an engineer at the airpollution unit of the Ohio Department of Health in 1972, my goal was to help

protect the environment and make the world a better place in which to live. It was thatsimple. Now, almost four decades later, I can honestly say that this simple goal still moti-vates me and drives my thinking. Le but principal de l’A&WMA:Faire progresser la profession del’environnement en fournissant un forumneutre qui favorise l’échange de connaissanceset le réseautage.

En réfléchissant au but principal del’A&WMA, je me suis mis à penser à mon butprincipal en tant que professionnel del’environnement. Quand j’ai débuté macarrière comme ingénieur à l’unité de la pol-lution de l’air du Ohio Department of Healthen 1972, mon but était d’aider à protégerl’environnement et de contribuer à faire dumonde un meilleur endroit où vivre. C’étaitaussi simple que ça. Maintenant, presquequarante ans plus tard, je peux dire en toutehonnêteté que je suis toujours motivé par cesimple but et qu’il influence ma façon depenser, ce qui est une des raisons pourquoije suis un membre actif de longue date del’Air & Waste Management Association.

J’aimerais vous demander de réfléchir auxraisons qui vous ont poussés à devenir desprofessionnels de l’environnement etpourquoi vous êtes devenus membres del’A&WMA. Même si nous travaillons dansbeaucoup de secteurs différents du domainede l’environnement et à des titres variés telsqu’ingénieurs, experts-conseils, régulateurs,

C’est mon souhait quel’A&WMA devienne l’endroit où les questionsenvironnementales peuvent être posées et lessolutions trouvées. Je vous encourage à vousjoindre à moi dans cette quête et àcontribuer pour que l’A&WMA devienneune organisation éducationnelle etprofessionnelle qui cherche des solutions auxproblèmes.

Quienes SomosEl propósito interno de A&WMAAvanzar en la profesión ambientalproporcionando un foro neutral para elintercambio y la interconexión delconocimiento.

El pensar acerca del propósito interno deA&WMA me llevó a pensar acerca de mipropósito interno como un profesionalambiental. Cuando comencé comoingeniero en la unidad de contaminación deaire en el Departamento de Salud de Ohioen 1972, mi meta era ayudar a proteger elmedio ambiente y hacer del mundo un lugarmejor para vivir. Así de simple. Ahora, casicuatro décadas después, puedo decirleshonestamente que esa simple meta aun memotiva y dirige mi pensamiento. Lo cual esuna de las razones por las que he sido unmiembro activo desde hace mucho tiempode la Air & Waste Management Association.

Me gustaría pedirles que pensaran porqué entraron a la profesión ambiental y porqué se convirtieron en miembros A&WMA.Aunque trabajamos en diversas partes delcampo ambiental y en distintas disciplinas ycapacidades—ingenieros, consultores,legisladores, educadores, y abogados, por

nombrar algunos—como miembros deA&WMA, creo que todos compartimos unpropósito común: mejorar el ambiente através del avance en la profesión ambiental.Pero mientras este es el propósito comúnque nos trae a la Asociación, es nuestra grandiversidad la que le da al A&WMA una desus fortalezas internas: el ser un foro neu-tral. Sir viendo a través de una arenaimparcial para el intercambio deconocimientos, la Asociación provee unparaguas bajo el cual una amplia variedadde teorías y soluciones pueden serintercambiadas y probadas y como resultado,la profesión ambiental puede avanzar.

Como su presidente, me he reunido convarios líderes del gobierno y de la industriapara promover al A&WMA como un fértilsitio de reunión donde las ideas y laspropuestas pueden discutirse sin prejuicios.Es mi deseo que A&WMA se convierta en ellugar donde los asuntos ambientales puedenventilarse y encontrarse soluciones.
