Congratulations to Anna Boltong!Completion of milestones is always something to celebrate in these newsletters. This month it is wonderful news to announce that Anna Boltong (Pictured) has submitted her doctoral dissertation at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her research has helped to characterise the influence of chemotherapy on taste function across the treatment trajectory in order to support best possible management of taste problems experienced by so many of our cancer patients. This research was a truly interdisciplinary piece of work, shaped by the input of medical oncologists, oncology nurses and sensory scientists as well as via Anna’s own professional background in clinical dietetics. Research findings will be used to guide the development of more specific pre-chemotherapy education material for patients.

Publications arising from Anna’s PhD include:

If you wish to contact Anna about her work, you can email her at [email protected]

Congratulations Anna!

Meet a new MASCC Member! - Regina de MendonçaI am dentist who has worked at the Centro Infantil Boldrini, an oncology and hematology pediatric hospital in Campinas, Brazil, since January 2001. I have an MsC in Oncology and PhD in child and adolescent health. I am involved in supportive care via our Department of Dentistry, which enables all patients to receive dental treatment when needed. Our goal is to prevent or reduce complications related to cancer and its treatment. I work in the dental care of pediatric patients with cancer and chronic blood disorders and conduct research on oral health in this population. For many years I have followed the activities promoted by MASCC / ISOO including study groups, publications and meetings. The quality of this work motivated me to become a MASCC member.

We wish to congratulate Dr de Mendonca for her recent publication in Supportive Care in Cancer:

de Mendonça, RMH., de Araújo, M., Lecy, C.E., Morari, J., Silva, RA., Yunes, JA., Brandalise, SR. (2012) Prospective evaluation of HSV, Candida spp., and oral bacteria on the severity of oral mucositis in pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Supportive Care in Cancer, 20(5), 1101-1107.

Please know we are also interested in knowing about all of the important milestones achieved by our MASCC members. Please tell us so that we can make everyone aware of the wonderful accomplishments that testify to the strength, ideas and enthusiasm of the people working in supportive cancer care.

Content Sharing Agreement between MASCC and Touch Medical Media

This month we profile Touch Medical Media in an interview by Barney Kent, managing director. In 2013, a content sharing agreement has been agreed upon between Touch Medical Media and MASCC.

Who are Touch Medical Media?Touch Medical Media (TMM) provide independent, cutting-edge peer-reviewed content from world-renowned physicians, designed to lead the debate on health and to engage, inform, and support physicians in improving patient outcomes globally. TMM provides an international platform for peer-reviewed content from industry-leading journals alongside other carefully selected sources and aims to support physicians, clinicians and leading industry professionals in continuously developing their knowledge, effectiveness and productivity within the field of oncology.

TMM’s portfolio of peer-reviewed journals, European Oncology & Haematology and Oncology & Hematology Review (US) include concise review articles, which are designed to keep busy physicians up-to-date with the latest developments in their field and serve as a key reference resource for the international oncology community. How are the articles written and disseminated? All articles are review-based pieces authored by opinion leaders and focus upon salient issues that impact patient care. The articles are short and concise, designed for maximum impact, aimed at senior specialists who have growing pressures on their time. These specialists are increasingly using secondary review journals to provide themselves with an efficient and insightful overview of prominent developments within their fields, and providing relevant citations for individuals who may choose to do further research.

World-renowned editorial boards are appointed from specialists in the field, which ensure that publications maintain editorial direction covering the hottest topics with all articles being subject to a rigorous peer review process. Topics and authors are selected through advice from the editorial board, internal research and the monitoring of many primary journals, conferences and physician websites. TMM produces and disseminates free-to-access content in print, online, via eBook, via monthly therapy and topic specific eNewsletters and at the major scientific meetings globally. The product is constantly improved - it includes more engaging video content online and has multiple launches planned to give clinician audiences a very valuable experience with every visit to the online therapy specific portals and to increase TMM’s database of registered users.

How can you help MASCC achieve its aims and objectives and why was a content sharing agreement developed?TMM is providing a platform globally for MASCC to share its content both in print and online. It also offers “free” branding opportunities such as premium advertising. TMM wants to provide its audience with the latest cutting edge content in supportive care in cancer. TMM is pleased to share its educational content with MASCC members.

How can members of MASCC learn more about Touch Medical Media?Go to www.touchoncology.com or at major congresses including the American Society of Clinical Oncology Congress.
