This past week, Carp hosted the 155th Carp Fair. While our community came out to enjoy this much anticipated event, it was also met with the tragedy of the tornado that touched down, affecting our neighbours in Dunrobin. Since the tornado, our community and Ottawa at large have banded together to help those who need it most. We urge everyone to help in whatever way they can – whether that’s volunteering their time and resources to the clean up or making a financial donation to the Red Cross. All contributions are welcome, and it’s important that we band together to help those most in need. In this season’s issue, you will find a photo collage of our community, a few features on local businesses and of course a calendar of upcoming events. If your business would like to be featured in our next edition, please do not hesitate to reach out. All the best, and until next time.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Carp Family Dentistry

Located in the heart of the village, Carp Family Dentistry has been under new ownership for the past year. Owner, and dentist Dr. Domenika Kasper shares what makes living and working in Carp so special, and how owning the practice was meant to be. Dr. Kasper is happy to take new patients; while in her care you can enjoy a blanket, pillow and a bottle of water, while enjoying the latest show on Netflix from the dentist chair!

How long has Carp Family Dentistry been operating in Carp?Carp Family Dentistry has been serving the Carp community for many years, although my husband and I purchased the clinic last year. Our wonderful team has the honour of caring for the families of West Carleton and we look forward to doing so for many years to come.

Why Carp?Carp is such a lovely town with a beautiful history. I come from a small village in Poland, while my husband grew up in the nearby village of Richmond. The people, the place, and the feeling of community is what makes Carp a wonderful place to call home.

T H E C A R P V I L L A G E R | N E W S L E T T E R | 5

We had always hoped to put down roots in a place like Carp, and while we were looking for houses here, we saw Carp Family Dentistry and joked that we could work there. A few weeks later the office came on the market. We were so overjoyed and excited, it felt like it was meant to be.

What makes operating a business within the village unique? Our location provides the unique opportunity to care for the residents of West Carleton. Patients coming to our office feel relaxed and at ease.

Our staff is friendly, kind, and consider patients friends and family. We are honored that they have asked us to take care of their oral health needs, and we put their health above all else in our clinic.

Where do you see Carp going in the future?Carp seems to be growing before our eyes! With new businesses and new home developments, we get to welcome even more residents to the community.

I imagine Carp will continue to grow, yet still have that friendly and neighbourly community feel. We are all so excited to be a part of Carp’s growth and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

- Dr. Domenika Kasper -

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT KIN Vineyard

With the recent celebration of their first year in business, and harvest season underway, KIN Vineyards and Winery are an active part of the Carp community. Not only are 2% of profits from their Understory vintage donated to local arts initiatives, but 2% of profits from KIN signature wines are donated to land stewardship and environmental projects in the Ottawa Valley. Stop by their Tasting Room after you tour the vineyard to sip a selection of wines and cider, while enjoying artwork from local artisans. KIN Vineyard wines can also be found at local restaurants such as Bar Laurel, Café My House and The Cheshire Cat.

How long has KIN Vineyards been operating in Carp?We planted our first vines in Carp in 2014, while original vines were planted in Kinburn in 2012. Last year was the first year our Tasting Room was open.

Why Carp?We chose to open in Carp because of the south/west slope which is ideal for sun exposure for the grapes. KIN Vineyard owner Chris VanBarr and myself both live in Kinburn, so the proximity of Carp to our own homes was ideal. To find a piece of land that fulfills all the needs of a vineyard, and is this close to the city of Ottawa was a rare find.

What makes operating a business within the village unique?Obviously what makes operating this particular business in Carp is that not only are we the vineyard and winery in the Ottawa Valley, but also the only winery in the Ottawa region growing vinifera vines.

Where do you see Carp going in the future? With the anticipated opening of Ridge Rock Brewing Co. and the popularity of Alice's, the Deifenbunker, and of course the Carp Market; combined with the great community dynamics of the village, we expect Carp will hold on to its agricultural roots while continuing to grow into a must-see destination!

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Huntley Curling Club

The Huntley Curling Club was incorporated in 1978, which put the wheels in motion for building a new curling facility in the village of Carp.

Since the first rock was thrown in February 1981, the club’s primary objective has been to provide a top-notch recreational and competitive facility for use by club members from the surrounding community areas.

Since then they have also introduced curling programs and activities to enhance the curling experience in the community.

What services/programs are offered? The Huntley Curling Club is a premier curling facility featuring four sheets which are maintained by the best ice-maker in the area.

In addition to the four sheets of pristine pebbled ice, there is also a friendly warm lounge for curlers to relax and enjoy the action on the ice, watch a game on the TV or chat while enjoying a pint or other beverage with other members and guests.

Plus a fully stocked Curling ProShop! Our bar features local and more common brews on tap as well as a fully stocked fridge carrying many other beer brands in addition to a good selection of wine, liquor, and other beverages. Our recently renovated kitchen is well-equipped for use during events and rentals.

We offer a wide range of daytime and evening curling leagues for teams and individual curlers of all ages and skill levels, from competitive to social, fun and novice leagues.

Our recognized youth program provides a wonderful experience for youth (aged 8-20) to be introduced to the sport of curling, learn the fundamentals of curling and play at the recreational level or progress to competitive team play.

We also provide a very popular Adult Learn to Curl Program which introduces adults to curling fundamentals and game play.

What age ranges can participate?Curling is one of the few lifetime sports. All ages curl from 8 to 100!!! I particularly love that it is a sport that you can participate in as an individual or as a couple or even as a family. Both our youth program and adult programs are welcoming to all skill levels. We welcome those that have never curled before to competitive curlers. It is an ideal sport for children that prefer to be in a non competitive environment.

Curling is having a bit of a renaissance – why do you think this is happening?Since curling was made an Olympic sport we have seen a great deal more interest in the sport.

T H E C A R P V I L L A G E R | N E W S L E T T E R | 8

Curling Clubs across the country have capitalized on the increased TV coverage and in general the increased interest in the sport. They have responded with Learn to Curl programs that not only focus on skill development but on the other important aspect of the game which is the social aspect. Meeting new friends and relaxing after the game are just as important to curlers as the game itself.

How can people get involved? At Huntley Curling club we welcome new curlers of all skill levels. We would love to hear from you. Please go to our website at huntleycurling.ca or for more information please e-mail: [email protected]

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT All Things Home

T H E C A R P V I L L A G E R | N E W S L E T T E R | 1 0

Anita Murray and the word “homes” are pretty much synonymous. Many know her name from her five years as editor of the Ottawa Citizen’s New Homes & Condos section, where she was the go-to person on everything from the latest downtown condo project to the newest trends in interior design and outdoor living.

Now she’s keeping Ottawa residents up to speed on those topics and many more as owner of the digital platform All Things Home (allthingshome.ca).

Anita’s company, which she launched a year ago with her business partner and former Citizen Homes writer Patrick Langston, is a free information hub on homes and gardens. A lively mix of stories (Anita is, after all, a journalist at heart), inspiring photos and valuable resources, All Things Home is exactly what its name suggests.

Anita, who’s been a Carp resident for 20 years, brings The Villager up to date on her new venture.

What can you tell us about All Things Home? Our goal when we designed the website was to connect homeowners, buyers and renters with the local housing and gardening industry. We’ve done that by creating six categories:

• New & Custom Homes• Resale & Rental Living• Renovations & Maintenance• Design & Decor• Gardening & Landscaping• and Finance & Savings

When you go to any of these categories, you’ll find news and feature stories, directories of professionals like renovators and landscape designers, helpful tips and advice sections, and more.

The new homes industry is a crucial part of our local economy, so we’ve placed a special emphasis on it. The category includes detailed information on over 90 developments in Ottawa and the surrounding area, a directory of model homes (people love visiting model homes, even if it’s just to collect great decorating ideas), and a listing of move-in ready homes that offer fast occupancy and often include fabulous upgrades.

T H E C A R P V I L L A G E R | N E W S L E T T E R | 1 1

That’s a lot. Do you have more on the site?We do – everything from a calendar of gardening club and other homes-related events to weekly listings of open houses. There’s even a section that describes over 20 neighbourhoods in Ottawa to help readers decide where they’d like to live.Patrick and I are also continually updating the site. For instance, we add new stories every week, writing them ourselves or linking to excellent articles in major publications from Ottawa and across the country.

We also have a growing team of guest columnists and industry experts. They cover all kinds of topics, from preparing your home for sale to the best ways to plan a renovation or even what you should expect when you work with a mortgage broker.

Tell us why you launched the business. The simple answer is that we both find the homes and gardens industry, and the people associated with it, fascinating.

The longer answer is that we all love our homes, whether it’s a five-bedroom house in a new subdivision or a modest city apartment, and we aspire to make them the best they can be. Sometimes that means a big kitchen reno; sometimes it means just sprucing up the backyard or cultivating a small balcony garden. But we are all busy and our budgets are limited, so a resource like All Things Home can help people find the experts, materials and strategies to achieve their dreams.

Providing that comprehensive, online resource is especially important now, when mainstream media has significantly reduced its coverage of the local housing industry. That gap means that people, whether they are veteran homeowners or shopping for their first house, need a trusted, impartial source of information. That’s what we provide.

What does the future hold for All Things Home?Right now, we’re focused on making the site the best it can be in Ottawa. That means keeping up with the local housing market, covering the booming renovation sector, monitoring important aspects of housing like green technology, and maintaining our professional relationships with all parts of the homes and gardens industry. It also means staying in touch with our readers to learn how we can meet their needs.

Will we take All Things Home beyond Ottawa? Potentially. We’ll have to see what happens. In the meantime, check out our site at AllThingsHome.ca, follow us on social media, and sign up for our newsletter to get regular updates on new stories.
