End of Year arrangements
The 2018 academic year is quickly coming to an end. Common Assessment Tasks will be completed during weeks 7 and 8
and our Headstart program will begin on Monday 3rd December through to Wednesday 12th December. All students
across the college will move into their 2019 classes, and commence work. Students are expected to attend Headstart as
each class will be provided with meaningful work and assessments towards their 2019 results. During this time we will also
be collecting data on students’ literacy and numeracy levels which will assist teachers to organise their teaching groups within
a class.
On Thursday 29th November all year levels will participate in a Celebration Day. Permission forms will need to be returned
on time for your child to participate otherwise they will need to remain at school for the day. The Year 10 Celebration will be
the formal to be held in the evening.

We’ve had a great turn out for our Homework Club on Wednesday nights. Students can get extra help with classwork, in a
relaxing environment.

Halogen
Student leaders from Churchill Campus attended Halogen ( a Young Leaders’ Day) in Melbourne, to develop their leadership
skills. They were very fortunate to hear from a diverse range of inspiring journeys to success and loved the photo
opportunities afterwards! The main message of the day was that successful people learnt from their mistakes and that roads
to success were never simple or straight forward. The presenters included Olympian Liesel Jones, magician Cosentino and
actor Uli Latukefu (Jonah from Tonga). The students all came away from the experience feeling excited and ready to further
their leadership skills back at Kurnai.
Thank you to Rebecca Lynch for supporting our students at this event.
Theatre Performances
This week our Year 7 and 9 theatre classes performed their plays for families and friends. On Tuesday our Year 9 group
performed ‘Blackrock’ written by Nick Enright. Blackrock is an Australian play which explores the challenging and confronting
themes of what it means to be a man, how women are viewed in society and youth culture. The cast and crew delivered a
riveting performance and should be proud of their hard work and effort. The audience spoke highly of the play and were
impressed with the acting, lighting and sets.
Our Year 7 students wrote their own plays and by coincidence had all chosen the theme of ‘bullies’. The cast was able to
provide an authentic performance based on scenarios on which they were able to relate. Once again, the audience praised
the confidence and ability of our students.
Congratulations to Kline and the students on such a positive end to their hard work and effort over the semester.
LEAP Presentation
Last week Kurnai students were presented with a play from a program called Learn, Experience, Access Professions (LEAP).
The following is an account of the presentation as written by Gemma Whykes and Maegan Ruffin:
On the 9th November 2018, the Year 7’s gathered into the drama room for a play based on future careers. It was presented by a
group representing the website named LEAP Higher Education. The LEAP program aims to demystify the links between school, higher
education and professions. Whilst some presentations tend to be boring, making the presentation into a play made it more
interesting to learn about higher education. Singing and dancing were involved to make the play eye catching, as well as dressing up
like school kids aiming the play to a Year 7 audience made it an enjoyable experience. Being Year 7’s, we learnt that our professions
don’t have to be plain and boring, we can choose courses that interest us and that we are confident about.

Term 4 continues to progress at lightning speed as we approach the final few weeks of
Year 7. During the next few weeks, students will be making their final touches to
projects and completing their work in each of their subjects before beginning their
transition into Year 8 for Headstart. As a celebration of their achievements, students
and staff will partake in the Campus Celebration Day which involves each year level
participating in a day of planned activities as organised by their year level teachers.
This day will occur on Thursday 29th November and we are all very much looking
forward to celebrating what has been an extremely enjoyable year.
Learning Behaviour Reports
With the final Learning Behaviour Reports being completed for 2018, we would like to congratulate the following students on achieving a GPA score of 3.8 or higher. These students celebrated last week with a hot chip lunch and deserve to feel very proud of their efforts:

Since the last newsletter the Learning Behaviour Reports for October have been
published. These reports show how your child has been working in their classes over
the last five weeks. These reports give parents and guardians the opportunity to have
the conversation with their child about how they are working in class time. These
reports do not comment on a student’s academic ability, but instead the skills that are
also transferrable to the work place.
Congratulations to Claire Irving and Lance Townsend who achieved
a perfect score for the October Learning Behaviour Reports:
All-Star Award
Congratulations to the following students who achieved 3.5 or higher in their October Learning Behaviour report. The All-Star
Award is to acknowledge the effort and diligence that the students are showing in their classes.
Inspiring Young People Lunch
On Wednesday 14th November, 32 Year 8 students were invited to attend a lunch event at the Morwell R.S.L which provided
the opportunity for the students to link with a number of people from a variety of occupations. The lunch event gave the
students the opportunity to learn more about careers and educational pathways. Inspiring Young People was a great
opportunity for the Year 8 students to view positive role models in the community and to encourage them to start thinking
about their own career and pathway. Throughout the event students gained some insight and information about specific
careers and general information about career journeys.
October Learning Behaviour Report Celebration Lunch
The following Year 8 students, who achieved 3.8 or higher for the October Learning Behaviour Reports had their celebration lunch of hot chips and soft drink, on Thursday 7th October. The celebration lunch is an event which all students and staff look forward to as it provides another way of recognising the positive endeavours that individual students are undertaking to assist them with achieving great results.

Mobile Phones
Mobile phones are still an issue with some students not placing their
phones in the phone holders which are located in all classrooms.
Students are aware that if they bring their phone into the classroom
and do not place it in the phone holder the phone will be taken by the
teacher and returned at the end of the school day. The concern is that
some students are arguing with teachers about when a phone should
be returned. Parents and guardians could also assist us with the phone
process by reminding their child of these rules as well as refraining
from texting or calling students during class time. A reminder that a
phone is not to be used instead of a laptop or calculator.
Celebration Day
Permission forms for the Year 8 Celebration Day were distributed late last week to all Year 8 students.
Celebration Day is a time when the Year 8 students are able to enjoy a visit to the cinemas where they
will be able to see a movie of their choice. All Year 8 students will be invited to return their permission
forms, however, attendance at this event will be subject to students behaviours throughout the
remainder of Term 4. On Thursday 29th November the Year 8 students will have the opportunity to
watch a private screening of the movie ‘Ralph breaks the Internet’ before its general release to the
public. They will then walk to Gippsland Immigration Park for a BBQ lunch before returning to school at
2pm for an early dismissal.

Uniform Expectations
A small number of students are continuing to try and avoid wearing the school uniform. If
students arrive at school, out of uniform, without a note, they will be required to change into
school supplied uniform for the day. If your child is out of uniform, please provide a signed note,
which explains why your child is not wearing uniform on a particular day. When students are at
school or participating in school activities that take them out of the school grounds they are
expected to be in full uniform. This does not include non-school uniform jackets, beanies,
hoodies or tracksuit pants, however they can wear long sleeve navy or white tops (without hoods)
underneath their polo tops. Students are also reminded that they are required to wear shoes that
are predominately black. If you require any assistance with school uniform. Please don’t hesitate
to contact the school and speak to either a member of the Year 8 Team of the Wellbeing Team
members.
Student Laptops
As the term progresses a small number of students are not bringing their laptops to school.
Unfortunately when the students who do own a laptop do not bring their own device to school they
are required to borrow one from the library. Unfortunately, at times, there will not be a suitable
laptop to borrow which can mean that a student may not be able to continue with class work. Staff
in the Year 8 team will continue to support those students who may be experiencing difficulties with
their own device. If parents and guardians could support the school by checking that their child is
taking their laptop to school that would assist with trying to develop good organisational habits.
Lockers
As the end of Year 8 approaches students need to start to think about cleaning out their lockers. All lockers in the Year 8
locker bay will need to be emptied by Wednesday 28th November as this is the last teaching day for the Year 8 students. All
students will be asked to:
Empty their lockers
Make sure that they return all books to the library
Place rubbish in the green bins outside the locker bay
Wipe out their locker out inside and outside
PBS Coupons
Year 8 students are continuing to receive PBS coupons for displaying the appropriate
PBS behaviours expected for Kurnai students from the Four Pillars – Relationships,
Engagement, Excellence, or Work Ethic. Students are encouraged to exchange their
PBS coupons, in a timely manner, for a prize from the display cupboard, which is in the
Wellbeing Office. Each week, during Team Time, students are given the opportunity to
‘cash’ in their coupons. Students are also able to ‘cash’ in their coupon points during
recess, lunch and after school. The most popular item from the cupboard is, still,
chocolate.
At the end of week 6 the following are the top 5 students for Year 8.
Nelly Love
Lance Townsend
Tom Hoghton
Tamsyn Walker
Ethan Sultana
A reminder to all Year 8 students that when they receive a ticket that they need to write
their name on the ticket and then place it into the PBS box, which is located in the
Library.

Celebration Day – Thursday 29th November
Students and staff will be off to “Jump and Climb” followed by a BBQ lunch at Newman Park in Traralgon to celebrate the
successful completion of our school year as a cohort.
Permission forms need to be returned ASAP to ensure attendance on the day.
Outdoor Education - Surf Camp: Bethany Blakeley
On Wednesday 7th November, 10 students from the Year 9 Outdoor Education class attended surf camp at Wilson’s Prom for 3 days. We had 3 lessons with our instructors Darby, Bones and Kelly. Most of us had done surf camp the previous semester so we got to do things we didn’t last time like learning how to turn.
The weather was very confusing and would go from hail to sunshine in a matter of seconds. We didn’t go hungry as our snack group went above and beyond and the other groups did okay.
Camping was great but there was lots of wombats. Overall good experience and would do it again.
Education Pathways
The Year 9 students that are to commence a VCE subject in Year 10 2019 attended the
Kurnai College University Campus on Wednesday 14th November for a transition session.
Students listened to a VCE overview, heard from a panel of current year 11s who discussed
their experiences and participated in a tour of the campus.
Common Assessment Tasks: CAT’s
Students will be busy over the next couple of weeks completing CAT’s for many of their classes. It is important that they are
coming to school during this time so that they have an opportunity to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that they have
been learning.
Team Time – Mock Interviews
Last week in Team Time students took part in Mock interviews to put into practice some of the things that they had been
learning about in this subject.
We were very grateful to the Interviewers who gave up their afternoon to be involved. The interviewers were members of the
wider school community and staff from the University and Churchill campuses.
Students were interviewed in pairs or groups of 3 and were assessed on a number of aspects throughout the experience.
Theatre Studies
The Year 9 Theatre Studies class put on a fantastic performance of BLACK ROCK, by Nick Enright this week.
We congratulate the students on the culmination of their efforts throughout the semester by bringing the story to life. Thank
you also to the parents and students that came to watch.

Attention ALL 2019 Year 11 and 12 students
Would you like to attend the Mt Hotham Camp in 2019?
Mt Hotham is a well-known ski resort approximately 4-5 hours drive from Churchill via Omeo. The main
activities undertaken on the camp will be downhill skiing and/or snowboarding.
The camp will run from Sunday 7th July to Friday 12th July, 2019. Students must be at the University
Campus bus stop at 10.00am on the Sunday. We intend to return to Kurnai College (University Campus)
at approximately 9.00pm on the Friday. Students will be staying at a Ski Lodge located at the top of the
mountain. The total cost of the camp will be approximately $1650.00 which includes:
Resort entries
Accommodation
All meals
Lift
Lessons
Night skiing on Wednesday evening
Ski/Snowboard Hire including carve skis, boots and poles or board and boots
Transport to and from Mount Hotham
Hotham hoodie jumper
Students will need to pay a deposit of $300 if they would like to secure a position for the camp by
1/12/2018. We have organised a payment plan in an effort to give families the opportunity to finalise the
full payment by 2.00pm on Friday 21st June, 2019. While we understand this is an expensive camp we
strongly believe that this is the most economical way of giving students the opportunity to participate in
Alpine Snow sports. All students who participate in this camp will come home exhausted and thoroughly
satisfied with their experiences, bubbling with stories of the thrills and spills they encountered.
In order for this camp to proceed, we require a minimum of 20 students to attend and will cap the attendance at 25 students. In the event of us not receiving enough interest, we will have to cancel this
camp and, in this instance only, your deposit will be refunded.
Students are expected to have a good behaviour history and an average or above average fitness level. Parents will be notified if their child is in danger of losing their invitation to camp due to poor behaviour at school. These decisions will be made by the Principal, in consultation with the advocate team and Camp Coordinator. Additional information will be provided to your child as time gets closer to ensure your child is properly
equipped for the camp. Their safety and comfort will depend on this. If students don ’t have the required
equipment they may be able to borrow a snow jacket and pants or alternatively this clothing can be hired from Mt Hotham.
Ambulance membership is highly recommended as a trip in an ambulance from Mt Hotham can cost
thousands of dollars if you are a non-member. We also recommend travel insurance for an additional
cost.
If you have any further queries, please contact Mrs Candy White, the Camp Coordinator at the University
Campus on 5132 3800.
The link below provides a video of students attending a camp to Mt Hotham. Please visit the below link
to gain more understanding of what adventures you will get up to if you decide to attend the Mt Hotham camp in 2019.
