Olympic TorchThe Olympic Torch arrives in the
Nicola Valley, tomorrow. Celebrationsare in Voght Park from
6-9pm, with thetorch arriving around 8pm.
The show starts at 6:45pm, and localvolunteer performers include
StuartEmslie and Tammy Weymouth, HarleyCarmen, the Little Creek
Singers &Drummers and the Akachuk hoopdancers, the Buffalo Gals
& Cowgirls,and the Merritt Bench ElementarySchool choir. Aaron
Pritchett headlines.
Rusty Brewer will carry the Olympicflame along Nicola Ave. to
Houston St.,
then back along Quilchena Av. to arrivein Voght Park at 8pm. The
eveningwinds up with fireworks at 9pm.
On Saturday, streets around VoghtPark will be blocked to traffic
from12noon to 11pm. Parking is available atCentral Prk, the Civic
Centre, AquaticCtre, MSS & Railyard Mall. Afree shuttle
bus will pick up on Voght St. at CentralPark, in front of the
Chamber office andthe Library, and drop off at Canford &Spring
St., running in a continuous loopfrom 6-10pm. Dress for the
weather,theres be no seating in the park.
Sunday morning, the torch leavesfrom the Aquatic Ctre at 7am,
making itsway up Voght St. Pancake breakfast will

Ranchers & economyUnprecedented hard times in BCs
cattle industry are bringing together cat-tlemen in Kamloops on
Wed., Feb. 10th,for panel discussions on ranching eco-nomics.
Organizers, the KamloopsStockmens Assoc., are calling the
situa-tion a cattle industry meltdown.
Among those making a presentationto the group is Dave Chutter,
who ispushing for a marketing board thatwould set beef prices.
Speakers will alsoinclude bankers & representatives fromthe
cattle marketing agency.
Discussions will centre around thepotential for a BC beef
marketing board &the future of agri-support programs
thatranchers say dont work for their indus-try. They say the
downturn started withdiscovery of BSE in Canadian cattle 7years
ago, and theyll be looking to dairyand poultry, industries they
say, aredoing fairly well the only agriculturalcommodities in a
healthy position.
