Too many largeopenings fromsalvage logging
A recent report has said that salvagelogging of dead pine is
creating largeopenings in central BC, and that govern-ment needs to
ensure areas are set asidefor biodiversity and wildlife before
sal-vage logging of mountain pine beetletimber clears the forests
close to roadsand communities.
At least 7 very large openings haveemerged on the landscape
through a
series of relatively isolated but well-intentioned decisions
about where toplace individual salvage cutblocks.These large
openings have much lessold forest reserved from logging thanwas
recommended by BC's chiefforester. The government will have toact
quickly to ensure it is not logged asthe salvage effort proceeds,
and as otheruses for the wood, like bioenergy, aredeveloped.
BC's chief forester had recommendedin 2004 when the allowable
annualcut was increased in central BC to helpsalvage the dead pine
trees that indi-vidual salvage cutblocks should includemore patches
of mature trees to providea range of forest types and ages
forwildlife and biodiversity and reduce
flood risks.A study of an area stretching fromBurns Lake through
Prince George, andsouth to Quesnel found that, whileforesters did
leave more trees standingin salvage cutblocks, as recommended,it
did not achieve the desired resultwhen looking at the big picture
acrossthe landscape.

A Thousand Clowns opened on April 5,1962 and ran for 428
performances onBroadway, starring Jason Robards, Jr. as aTV kids
show writer who drops out and
raises his nephew with his own antic, icon-oclastic spirituntil
the Child WelfareBureau forces him to take a mind-numb-ing job. I
feel A Thousand Clowns is his(Herb Gardners) masterpiece. It is a
realhuman comedy of poignancy and laugh-ter, with all of humanitys
foibles andeccentricities. There is a great depth of loveand
understanding for all in this play.There are great life lessons to
learn daily,which I find myself still doing. For HerbGardner to
have written this play in hisearly twenties is a miracle, Jason
Robards.The play opened to rave reviews.
Herb Gardners career was unusual. He zoomed to early success but
then onlyproducing a handful of plays and scripts over his final 37
years. His voice was sodistinctive however, his lead characters
were so mesmerizing and his humour wasso appealing, that he became
and remained one of the most-produced playwrightsworldwide. At age
17 Herb had a play staged in New York; at 19 he had created the
massive hit cartoon phenomenon The Nebbishes (the 1950s
equivalent of TheSimpsons); by 24 he had a published novel; and
before his 28th birthday A ThousandClowns was a hit on Broadway,
earning him a Tony nomination for best play, andthe New York Drama
Critics Best New Playwright award. Amovie was made ofClowns in
1965, earning him an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay,
andthe Writers Guild Award for best screen comedy.
Cold weather sheltervolunteers wanted
The Social Planning HousingCommittee in Merritt is working at
set-ting up a cold weather shelter inresponse to the governments
new Outof the Cold legislation.
While still in the early stages of plan-ning, a volunteer
information trainingsession is being set up with ASKWellness and
Kamloops volunteers, tohelp pepare Merritt for its own shelter.
